  1. dammit man that is cool! how much has all this set you back out of interest?

Windows 7 Pro FREE (Microsoft Gold Partner status)

PS I would be happy to build this for anyone else that was interested, at cost price of course ;)

 on the first one, you'll see that it's not covered to install it on a PC for home use in a car B) on the second one I'll hold you to that! :teeth:

My operating system is legit! but there are many ways of not paying for this!

Anders, if you can tare yourself away from your potato farm and come down south I will gladly make one for you

  2. dammit man that is cool! how much has all this set you back out of interest?

I have had a couple of pm's about costs, so here you go! (I am fortunate that I work in IT so I get things at cost price ;) )

    To date I have spent:

    Motherboard and processor £104.00

    Case £41.19

    Hard disk £43.05

    RAM £24.98

    Bluetooth adapter £5.26

Windows 7 Pro FREE (Microsoft Gold Partner status)

Dragon Speak 10 (PC can accept voice commands) FREE

Centrafuse front end software (using trial atm - but it cost $79, available on torrents also)

    to buy:

Touch screen - not sure which one yet - budgeted approx £200

Front and rear cams - estimate £15 each

Nissan CAN BUS lead and Blatz software (engine management and diagnostics) approx £100

Fusion Brain Version 4.0 (I/O board to control various aspects of the car) $59.99

Finger print scanner for engine start - approx £35

I budgeted £500 for the project, but I am sure it will cost more as I will want it to do more things

Edit: I forgot Satnav - not sure what to use yet, but USB GPS receiver approx £25 - software extra

  3. nice, i'll be interested to follow :)

did you look at anything that was purposefully car orientated? (eg shock proof)

Yep - the hard disk has shock proof protection apparently - however I will be looking to replace it once installed with a Solid State Disk - price an issue at the moment £££

  4. Looks like you need that bottle of vino

    Nice work bud

Not sure about the website on the computer though

The website wasn't posted purposely, I just happened to be posting something when photo was taken. At the end of the day all the forum politics is bollox anyway - this is a great forum, and so is the other one (still unsure if I can mention the name!, pathetic really!)

  5. I have being meaning to build a CarPC for nearly three years now, and have finally decided to do it! Thanks to Hynder (Alan), nrez123 (Nathan) and Tricky-Ricky who have given me inspiration in their posts.

Ordered some bits, and they arrived yesterday...

Kit list to date (I will update this as I go):

    Zotac ION N330 IONITX F-E Motherboard http://www.wstore.co.uk/index.asp?pg=pr ... rod=686875

    Akasa Mini_ITX Case http://www.wstore.co.uk/index.asp?pg=pr ... rod=727542

    WD Scorpio (Black) - 320GB Internal Hard Drive - 2.5" - SATA-300 - 7200 rpm - Buffer: 16MB

    Kingston 2GB DIMM 240-pin - DDR II - 800MHz - CL6 - 1.8 V - Unbuffered - Non-ECC Memory

Belkin Mini USB Bluetooth Adapter - Bluetooth 2.0 EDR - Class 2

    Windows 7 Pro 32 bit

    Centrafuse 3 Auto

It only took 10 mins to assemble all the bits. I then installed Windows 7 Pro - boot time is about 30 seconds but that's not an issue as the PC will be in 'sleep mode' when not in use (sleep boot less than 5 seconds)

The case I bought has DC input (12v) but I am not sure how this will cope in the car so I might need to get a Carnetix one which can handle cranking voltage and has intelligent shutdown if battery drain is too much etc. I will spend the next couple of weeks 'bench testing' before I install in the car.

I tried to pair my iphone with the PC, but it was a complete pain in the a$$ and I gave up after an hour - then I found a piece of software called 'Bluetooth Soleil' and it work a treat! (I later found out that this was included with Centrafuse 3  )

Installed Centrafuse 3 and this is a great front end (but I will try others like Roadrunner etc.). Iphone pairing now works a treat - but I still havent worked out how to download contact list to CF yet.

I am still undecided on what touchscreen monitor to use, so at the moment I am using VNC to connect to the box...

    zac3.jpg

    Next on 'To Do' List:

Find suitable SatNav software (USB GPS)

Find decent front and rear cams (stealthed)

    Purchase Blatz cable and software

Purchase USB I/O board to control various things in the car (inc finger print start) http://www.fusioncontrolcentre.com/Fusi ... /index.php

Investigate voice commands (I have Dragon Speak 10)

    Skin CF3

That's all for now - but I will update as I go...

  6. I've considered leasing a few times but I just can't get my head around it. I obviously understand the concepts but just not under what circumstances I'd need to be in for it to be beneficial.

The main benefit is obviously you don't have all your capital tied up in a car, which is very appealing to me whilst the financial sector continues to be volatile.

The way it gets sold to you is that you only finance the cost of the depreciation, not the total cost of the car.

The downsides to me are the limited mileage and high monthly payments due to the short term of usually 2/3 years plus you need to commit to the payments for the term and face a heavy penalty if you want to give the car back early.

If I didn't have the cash to buy outright I think i'd rather get a loan for the full amount and maybe have it over a longer term so that the payments are close to the lease payments, at least then you would own the car outright and could sell it at anytime if needed etc...

If you are self employed or run a Ltd Company there are tax benefits to leasing, and you can claim part of the VAT back ;)

  7. AFAIK all JDM imports run can bus, and the protocol is JOBD which can be a pain for finding the right reader, i bought an Innovate LM-3 partly because i wanted another widebamd lambda set up, and partly because it was supposed to read most protocols, and then found it won't deal with JOBD.

I ended up buying the Blazt cable and software,

I am in Hastings East Sussex, so not too far from you, so if you want me to run a diagnostic check on your Z then let me know :)

Cheers Ricky - I might take you up on your kind offer!

Since posting this I have also looked at the Blazt cable and software and it seems as if this is the way to go (thanks to Hynder/Alan for info).

From what I can gather the Blazt was designed for the Nissan CANbus and can therefore pick up far more info that the standard OBDII.

Is you Blazt linked up to a CarPC or do you just plug in a laptop when needed?

    David

  8. Hi guys - I have heard a rumour that the standard OBDII reader doesn't work on early imports, and only the CAN-BUS and Consult work - is there any truth to this? I was planning on getting an ELM327 which is supposed to support the following OBD2 protocols:

    J1850 VPW

    J1850 PWM

    ISO9141-2

    ISO14230-4 (KWP2000)

    ISO15756-4 (CAN-BUS)

Anyone got an ELM327? Anyone got a standard OBDII reader in the South East area that I could plug in and test?

    Thanks, David

  9. I have been meaning to build one of these for ages, but never got around to it. I finally ordered some bits today, including the same motherboard as Nathan - it has great reviews

I intend running Windows 7 as well - but my main question is about power. How will you make the system power up when the car starts and power down (or sleep/hibernate) when you exit the car. Will this be automated or a simple on/off button?

One of the cases I have looked at is this one http://misco.ie/ProductInfo/ProductInfo ... ode=162779

as it has built in DC-DC, but I am not yet sure how it will handle cranking

post a new thread I want to know how you get on. :p

I will Anders, when my bits arrive in the next day or so

  11. I know many people are against this because of the dangers of loss of light output etc - but I have found a product that works!

This is road legal and meets all MOT standards etc and unlike traditional film is a doddle to fit - it took me less than 20 minutes to do both rear lenses - its cheap as well - £10.99 for a sheet (enough for both) Some pics (excuse crappy iphone)...

    Before pic:

    tint1.jpg

Light off and remove backing sheet - dont be put off by creasing, this stuff is flexible!

    tint2.jpg

    tint3.jpg

    tint4.jpg

Trim (with scalpel provided in kit)

    tint5.jpg

Once happy that there is no bubbles/creases, apply heat to activate glue:

    Fitted back on car:

    tint7.jpg

    tint8.jpg

    tint9.jpg

    tint10.jpg

and a close up - this is the secret of FlyEye - unlike traditional tints, it actually lets loads of light through

    tint11.jpg

a couple of pics at night to show that light does get through...

  12. if it cuts the wastage and improves services and i don't have to pay more for the privilege then im all for it

A few years ago I worked for a US IT company that had a branch over here (they were the biggest supplier of IT equipment to the NHS - I actually worked on the contract for managed email for 1.2 million NHS employees)

I lost count of the amount of meetings I had with NHS middle management that were basically overpaid, clueless civil servants - the only reason they worked there was because they couldn't get a real job in the private sector!!!

So yes - getting rid of the slackers and spending money on nurses/doctors instead is definitely a good thing

  13. my first thought was it could be a good idea - privatisation introduces competition which means services have to be improved in order for them to survive etc

HOWEVER - this isn't how its going to work - The NHS will still exist as an organisation (but getting rid of all the PHCT etc) BUT they will still have a form of monopoly for those that can't afford to go private - so basically we will all have to pay regardless
