  1. Thanks guys - great to be back in a forum that gets responses Its the brake pipes that concern me - just trying to access whether its £100 or £1000 job. Thanks
  2. Hello all, After 18 months without a Z, I have been drawn back! I have been looking at a 2005 standard car. I have looked at the MOT history and it has flagged up the following: Reason(s) for refusal to issue Certificate Nearside Headlamp cleaning device inoperative (1.7.2) Offside Headlamp cleaning device inoperative (1.7.2) Nearside Front abs to flexi Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Nearside Front flexi to caliper Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Offside Rear flexi to caliper Brake pipe excessively corroded (3.6.B.2c) Advisory Notice issued Offside Front flexi to caliper Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c) Nearside Rear flexi to caliper Brake pipe slightly corroded (3.6.B.2c) Front registration plate deteriorated but not likely to be misread (6.3.1d) Engine covers fitted obscuring some components in the engine bay Could someone help me with the likely costs of carrying out the above and whether they are DIYABLE Many thanks - and hi to all. Mark

  4. Thanks for the reply. I have ordered a kicker cvt652 - so hopefully that will help. I want to improve the sound quality, rather than rattle the neighbours windows. First off I will try replacing the standard speaker with the kicker one. Following that I can try adding an amp (if you think that will help??). Plan b is to build an enclosure and add a 10" kicker. What do you think? I have a vibe lite air bass1 amp - not sure whether this is too powerful for what I want, although it does have a volume control. http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_237503 With respect to front speakers I have found these. http://ultimateaudio.co.uk/shop/speaker ... akers.html If I bought component speakers, can I just use the bass speaker and retain the tweeters that are built in to the dash Sorry for all the questions, as you can see I'm a bit lost with all this at the moment!! Many thank mark.
  5. Hi guys, I am exploring subwoofers. I got heaps of great advice on here for the 350z, but I'm hoping that someone could give me a little info for my other car, an Audi Q5. Before anyone says, the Audi forums, they just don't seem as helpful, well at least the Q5 ones anyhow. Also hopefully it's fairly generic info I'm after so it may well help others. Ok my dilemma is this. I would like to upgrade the sound system a little. The car has 10 speakers as below: 8 inch woofers in front doors (4 ohms) Two tweeters / small speakers on dash One centre / small speaker on dash 6 inch woofers in rear door Tweeters in rear doors Subwoofer in boot under floor (6 inch , 2 ohms) The car has 'Audi sound system' so I was hoping to just upgrade some speakers I was thinking to replace the woofers in the front door and the sub The sub is passive and sits in a round plastic case where the spare wheel would go. With regard to the sub one option is just to replace the speaker with a higher quality one Next was to put a bigger diameter sub into a new enclosure (but still wired directly) Or finally to get a new enclosure and introduce a seperate amp If I used a separate amp, would this take the high level input ok, or does using high level input create poorer sound? I'm also looking for a recommendation regarding 8 inch speakers for the front doors. Any help, any comments, much appreciated. Regards mark
  6. Maybe just print out the guide - its very simple - 1 hours labour at the very tops
  7. This seems a permenant fix - several years at least. It is of course a good idea to use a high quality (perhaps marine) axle grease.
  8. Yes if they just banged it all on fuel that would seem much more fair - it would also make a much better case for having a gas guzzling second car
  9. Just wondering whether anyone has thought on whats ahead for road tax. I am wondering whether the present lower tax rates of pre 2006 cars is likely to end soon-ish - i have found the text below. Anyone any ideas??? If it's going to go up then I guess I'd be more inclined to by maybe an 07 or 08 model. I would also imagine that it would pretty much knock pre 06 model prices a fair bit. Thanks for any input.. Regards Mark The Chancellor pegged the increase in Vehicle Excise Duty (Road Tax) for 2012/13 to inflation, but this could be the last year that goes by without significant reform. Buried in the main Budget document is an admission that as emissions have come down, so too has the amount of tax that the Government is collecting. It also proposes to investigate the option of allowing car owners to pay for road tax by Direct Debit. "1.206 The Government will consider whether to reform VED over the medium term, to ensure that all motorists continue to make a fair contribution to the sustainability of the public ï¬nances, and to reflect continuing improvements in vehicle fuel efï¬ciency. In addition, the Government aims to develop a direct debit system to allow motorists to spread their VED payments. The Government will seek the views of motoring groups on these measures." It also contains a paragraph that shows that the grace period for displaying a road tax disc will be extended to save on postage costs: "2.149 VED: tax disc display waiver – The Government will reduce tax disc postage costs by extending to fourteen days the grace period, following the payment of tax, on the non-display of a tax disc in a vehicle. (Finance Bill 2013)"
  10. Wow that's a huge increase. I think DMS do a good remap too - sure I read about it in evo a while back. Wish the z had a turbo !!
  11. Yep that would be great. I'm on the Wirral - hoping to get to the chirk meet, for at least a morning.
  12. Official is about 5.2, but most magazine tests show around 4.7 (the official time was blunted to stop M3 owners getting upset)
  13. Do you mean that it's good with the exhaust, or are you saying its best to skip the plenum mod and just do the exhaust? Which is a good exhaust for a bit of extra power etc, but still suited to everyday driving? Thanks, mark.
  14. Ha I'm not sure I'll beat him - the 135i is seriously fast - 3 litre twin turbo!! I was expecting to be thrashed, thought the zed did brilliantly!!
  15. Just wondering whether the plenum mod helps engine smoothness at high rpm. My zed is sliky smooth up until around 5000rpm plus. I'm wondering whether the mod helps the engine breath more freely and in turn whether this will make it smoother at the top end? My logic may well be flawed, but I'm guessing someone on here will know Regards mark.
  16. From a steady 30mph start to 70mph-ish in 3rd gear, my brother and I paced our two cars today. To my delight, the Zed was still just about a meter behind his boot at the end - I have new respect for the Zed The Zed is even quicker than I though
  17. Mine has three keys, two and a valet key.
  18. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/3844109.htm My car, but still undecided whether to sell or not!
  19. That's great - thanks.
  20. I think il cars usually get better corrosion protection. FYI, my car is my second car and so I had to start insurance from scratch (ie zero no claims discount). My premium was £670 - so worth shopping round. Incidentally putting my younger other half on the insurance reduced the premium by nearly £100. Odd really as her drivings way worse than mine
  21. I've been having a good look around the engine and have noticed a few tiny cracks to the outside of the belts. The insides don't show any cracks. Are these outer cracks cause for concern? I presume the belts drive the ac and alternator - or do they do something which would cause harm to the engine if they snapped? Thanks mark.
  22. Thanks guys. It's funny how different people's opinions are on the type of oil... Some say that using oem and moly slip made it worse! Amsoil seems to get good all round feedback - but I guess oem can't get you into trouble. Think I'll do it myself too - so ill see how you get on. Thanks
  23. I am aware that this topic has been discussed. I have been researching the above for a couple of hours. My car is 05 with 79k. I'm not sure if it will have had the oils changed or not (service history is at work). The car drives fine but wondering the following: 1. Is it worth changing them? 2. Does changing make shifting smoother (mines pretty smooth as is) 3. Is it best to use oem oils There seems to be a lot of conflicting posts where people's trannys actually feel worst after, but I'm thinking that they may have changed oil to try and solve an underlying problem. So in my instance, where there is no problem, is it likely to make the shifting even better, or am I best just to leave alone. Thanks Mark
  24. Sounds like I'm in the right ballpark. Thanks guys, I've stuck it on piston heads for £5850, but not 100% sure I'm ready to let her go yet. I'll see if her indoors says anything else Thanks for the feedback. I fancy doing the meet in chirk, so may keep it till after then at least. Regards mark
  25. Hi guys ownership of my Z is coming under threat. A combo of it being a second car and my wife expecting in August! I was wondering what price would be sensible to secure a reasonable quick sale The car is grey, none gt. 2005, 1 previous owner and totally standard save for upgraded front speakers. 79k miles, lovely condition, new rear tyres etc... Doesnt require anything. Thanks for any thoughts, mark.
