  1. I agree, some of it is a bit silly and some of their product tests are either unfair or flawed imho. In some cases though it's been pretty good. It does show that own brand stuff can be just as good if not better than big name brands. I'm guilty of buying branded stuff in the past purely because the assumption is that it will be better.

Edit: rather than banning tumble dryers and such it would be better if they told people how to use the stuff they already have more economically.

  2. Started work on the 350 this week. Having previously worked on my cars on a gravel driveway outside, I'm so grateful I have a garage with a nice flat concrete floor

Got the car in the air and started removing the old discs and pads. One of the R clips was missing from the drivers side and the pin had started to slip out. Thought the pin would be long gone so ordered some new ones online. Once I unbolted the caliper it fell out of somewhere! Was a bit bend out of shape which explains why it fell out but I'm amazed its stayed with the car!

The old pads are actually in pretty good condition! I'm debating selling them on as they Hawk Ceramic pads and look like they have almost the same life on them as my new Brembo HP Sports.

Old brake discs were well overdue a change. I have a feeling they are the original disks making them 12 years and 58K miles old. Looks like they are held together by purely by hopes, dreams, and rust. Lots of rust! :scare:

    ... Moving on.

New discs and pads have been fitted at the front. Started work on the rear brakes last night. Broke the passenger side caliper bolts loose and removed the pads then realised it was nearly 10pm so thought I better leave the rest for another day.

I've been using this Mintex ceramic grease when assembling brakes. Used it on my Civic and been pretty impressed with it. Its really sticky stuff which makes applying it a bit messy but once its on it never moves. With copper grease I've found it likes to wonder off once it gets a bit warm. Found small bits of it on the inside of my alloys before.

I know the brembo's are prone to squeak so I applied a thin layer of the Mintex grease on the sides and bottom where the pad meets the caliper, the back where it meets the pistons, and the top edge where the spring clip sits on the pad. Also greased up the pins and the part of the spring clip the pin sits on. The only chance of it squeaking now is if a mouse takes up residence in the car.

I'm aware the R clips are missing from the pins in this photo, waiting for the new ones to arrive. If not Ill fix up the old ones and shove them back in.

New DBA T3 4000 discs and Brembo HP Sport pads fitted

Happy with the progress so far. Still need to do the PCV and I've also ordered some Whiteline drop links from Ewen@ClarkMotorsport. Car should be ready for its MOT on the 1st April then

  4. Glad this is sorted

This is probably irrelevant now but a friend of mine had a similar experience with their (non ST) Focus's electrical's going batshit crazy. Dashboard lights went into disco mode and the wipers were going without being on but stuttering across the window  . Funny for me, not for them.

That was something to do with water ingress into the Body Control Module. Apparently water is able run down the electrical cables and into the BCM. Googled it and appeared to be a common problem.

Possibly something to bear in mind if the issue returns.

  5. Been tempted to do the stencil and spray paint option but was concerned about the paint causing problems with the rubber. So enamel of primer should work?

Shouldn't be too hard to make your own stencil, especially if you want to just colour the existing lettering.

  6. Ah been a long time since my poor 350Z has seen much love. Nearly a year from making my last post on this topic and all that has really changed is I've gone back to the stock GT4 wheels and sold the LMGT4's. The poor car event spent months at a time sat on my parents drive way with a totally flat battery.

Times have changed now though! The neglect has paid off in the long run and me and the missus now own our own house, most importantly it has a 350Z sized garage :#1:

Now the important things are all sorted its time to give the 350 a bit of TLC. First and foremost it needs a wash! Once that's done I've got a nice new set of DBA T3 brake disc and Brembo HP Sport pads all round ready to go thanks to Ewen at CM

ZMANALEX is also providing me with a good condition PCV which I'm replacing as a precaution. Oil consumption seems to be creeping up and I'm doing more miles now so for the sake of a few quid it makes sense to do.

Once those jobs are done the next thing is tyres. I'm still loving the Work T7R's in white or gunmetal so I might have to save the pennies and get some new alloys at the same time. No point in getting tyres for the stock wheels then changing alloys as the size will be different. Current tyres (Falken 452's) are still good enough with enough tread so I can afford to wait. Tyre choice is easy for me Yokohama AD08R's. I've run them on my FN2 Civic Type R and LOVED them. They are are certainly not a comfort tyre but to hell with it, the grip is incredible so totally worth it.

With that done too I'll be looking at getting in some track time before the next steps, unless I can justify a bucket seat for me at least. Been there done that in leather seats, ended up with a very bruised knee and almost in my passengers lap a couple of times!

  7. Should be off for sure but maybe they forgot when the did the first few times for the board and now they have to leave it on for fairness.

Also, so glad Chris Evans has gone, his shouting was so off putting. Finally the program is watchable, really pleased Chris Harris is front and centre now!

Only criticism would be that I'm not sure the three of them have gelled yet, still feels a little awkward at times. Once they relax a bit more I think it will be spot on.

  8. I'd say its your alarm putting more load on the battery

I had a Viper alarm on mine for a while and battery would last 7-10 days before it would be a gamble starting. Even after replacing the battery in 2014 with Bosch S4 this didn't really improve much.

I've since replaced the alarm and now the battery lasts somewhere between 2-3 weeks before it needs charging or jumping.

Assuming it does start then I have no problems stopping and starting again after a relatively short 10-20 minute journey.

  9. Probably a lost cause but a 370Z owner whose car I see regularly has had it nicked from Dunstable.

Thieves broke into his house early this morning and took the keys, jewellery, and the car.

    Reg is BD51 CAM

Mods, I know the policy for posting registrations but given the situation thought it was necessary. By all means remove if required.

No idea if it will be found written off or broken for parts but would be worth keeping an eye out, especially for the wheels!

  10. Like that site longsh07.

Always found it a bit more reliable than eBay specials.

Had really good results with their own brand halogen "xenon effect" bulbs too

EDIT: I've heard a lot of people say "xenon effect" last half as long as normal yellowish bulbs and the big brands like to charge an arm and a leg for them. ABD's were half the price when I bought them. I can cope with half the life if they are also half the price.

  11. Check the bonnet, boot and doors are all closed properly and that the sensors are registering the doors are properly shut. Look at the interior light if set to trigger on the doors and the light in the boot (if you can see it).

I don't know for sure but I don't think it even tries to lock if the doors are open. Could be wrong though as I've not used my normal remote for some time.

  12. Just to throw another suggestion in the mix, I ran a set of Nokian WRA3 on my civic. More than happy with them.

Generally grip was good, perfect for the gross wet and cold weather but never had the chance to use them on snow.

Dry grip was also a lot better than expected.

There is a significantly noticeable difference between them and a summer tyre as you would expect and you can feel them moving around as they are so soft but they are very confidence inspiring. Much more so than using a summer tyre in winter!

I used them from about November to February last year once the temps dropped under 15 degrees then swapped them out for a track day. Thankfully weather held and I didn't have to put them back on.

About time I got them back on actually now the weather is turning.

  13. Hi guys, first time owner of a 350z here. Bought it about 5 weeks ago. Loving the car so far, just a couple of issues.

Its a 2008 HR with 53000 miles on the clock.

Do these cars not like going below 1500rpm? If I'm slowing down and the revs go below 1500rpm, when I apply the gas a few seconds later it seems to judder a bit? I've never experienced this before in any previous cars. The lower the revs, the worse it gets. If the revs go below 1500rpm then I have to release the clutch and apply more gas then re-enage the clutch otherwise it judders/jolts forward sharply. This is only in gears 1-3, if it happens in first gear then it jolts back and forth and does the kangaroo dance. Is this a sign the clutch is on its way out or is it normal? Its hard to explain but it only judders once - then it continues accelerating as normal, I'm not sure if the revs are too low, but in previous cars its normally around 1000rpm when the juddering happens

Other issue is around 2000rpm theres a rattle sound coming from the rear of the car, sounds like the exhaust making a rattle. But could be a heatshield or something I guess? I'm going to upgrade the exhaust to a Cobra soon.

    Thanks :)

    http://imgur.com/a/EzANA

The juddering might be caused by a gunked up throttle if the car feels like it's about to stall. I had a similar experience where the car was really struggling to rev and was basically impossible to drive. Ended up cleaning the throttle valve and all has been well since.

Just a warning if you clean the throttle. Disconnect the battery before moving the valve. People have managed to burn out the ECU or BCM (I forget which) by moving it while still connected. disconnecting the throttle connections should work too but I think it's more of a faf than just removing the negative from the battery.

I asked Mark at Abbey Motorsport but about this when I had my remap and it's to do with the throttle being electrically 'live' even when the car is completely off. The ECU monitors it and can get fried if you move it while there is still a live circuit.

  14. I guess my point was that the second you pay £80k for this car, you have lost money. I have not seen an R34 limited edition go for £80k yet, £60k at a push, they probably imported that one for £50k 2 years ago. My point was not anything to do with dream cars vs something else, if you paid £80k for this you are being ripped off in my opinion, as mentioned its not even the later better spec'd Nur edition. If some 'dreamer' bought it for £80k and then sold it again in 6 months time they would probably lose a lot of money on it. These are just not valued at £80k at the moment from what I can see, and the ad is trying to blind you with endless Nismo additions when in fact most are low value items with no impact on performance or desireability like rad caps and the like. You can buy a V-spec II or Nur for substantially less and have your dream car still.

Don't get me wrong I can see where you are coming from but I personally think money is not as important as some people. If someone wants to spend £69K on that R34 with a list of ultimately pointless Nismo bling then good for them. As long as they are happy what does it matter how much they paid or how much it can sell for.

I dont think I've ever bought a car because it will be worth x in x years time. I buy cars I like. Simple as that.

  15. No reason you couldn't drive and enjoy that R34. The point was the most likely buyer wont.

Regardless if that M Spec is a lot of money, someone will buy it and enjoy it in their own way. To some people its not about how much it costs but the joy of owning it.

Anyone spending £80K on an R34 is buying it as an appreciating asset. This is up for £80K because it only has 38K miles - if it had 88K it wouldnt be worth as much.

If you buy it and put 20K miles on it you wont realise the same appreciation as if it was still 38K, you might not even get any appreciation as other cars with 40, 50K will be more attractive.

Jesus, just realised its not even a Nur, thats crazy money!

Realistically, yes I agree. People are unlikely to buy it for any other reason than as a collectable or to make money on it. While unlikely it is still possible someone may buy it to use it!

    Edit:

Going back to the original point of the thread. I still stand by the fact that I'd rather spend £80k on the R34 i posted than a current gen R35.

That said, there are plenty of other cars I'd buy with that kind of money, like a Caterham 620R.

  16. Unfortunately, Pulsars, and Glanza are highly sought after by youngsters because they're so quick and cheaply modded. Think a young friend of mine was on his 3rd or 4th engine on his GT before he offloaded it to another 20-something who promptly ploughed it into a lamp post in Rhyl.

Am I a bad person when I'm glad that idiots do this?

I sold my EP3 Type R to someone from the villages (think Greek version of Farmer John and his retard son), kid was 18 years old. I was like 'this is a fast car, make sure he knows what he's doing'.

2 weeks later I had the ****er on my phone, his son had rolled the car 5 times (never even told me if the boy was alright or not, but I'm assuming he was) and he wanted to blame me for selling an unsafe car. Since he was swearing at me down the phone, I told him to basically fk off, at which point he started threatening to 'send the boys down'. I told him to send whoever he likes, and I'd send them back in jiffy bags. :)

Shockingly, nobody ever turned up. :) I later learned that he tried to sue to the Honda dealership where he had the car inspected prior to buying it off me as well. Some people just need euthanasia.

My only regret is that the father wasn't in the car as well when it was crashed. Yeh, I'm an orrible you know what. Sue me.

Not quite as extreme but I know of someone who bought a MK2 MR2 and wrote it off on the way home from collection.

Having owned one and introducing it ass first to a hedgerow once I know they are prone to snap oversteer when not driven correctly. I have some sympathy for him but even so it takes some to write your car off minutes after buying it.

  18. I guess that's what happens when a car is made iconic through a film.

Personally the R32 is my favourite but now the US can finally import them, their prices have gone up too!
