That was my first thought, could have been a slow puncture or under inflated for quite a while. The other possibility is that its been repaired at some time and the tyre fitter hasn't noticed the inner damage.

Then you could have picked up a puncture during your journey, once the pressure drops below 20 psi then overheating is rapid. Was there a burning rubber smell?
