Top front Strut Brace - Does it push or pull !!

HI,

 

I changed my front springs last night and in the process I had to loosen and remove the strut brace above the engine. I was really careful and marked up the top of the centre nut. I turned it two full rotations until it was loose and I could remove the brace....

 

Two hour later when putting it back together I forgot which way I rotated it!!!!! I turned it twice one way and it pushed apart and then turned twice the other way and it pulled!! Both feel rigid as before but one is wrong.

 

Please can someone tell which way I should turn the middle bolt or whether the strut is pushing or pulling!

I'm fairly certain that the strut brace pushes against the struts.

It pushes, but don't over do it.

I found out the hard way is that the inner nut nearest the bar has a REVERSE THREAD !!!! I was trying to loosen with an extension bar etc, ive mashed the nut up. Doesn't look pretty.

Might try and replace it at some point.
