edwmas Posted April 14, 2012 Share Posted April 14, 2012 Hi, Need some advice about a braking problem I have. I'v had my 350z for a year and a half and had no problems. In November I took it for a service to chorley Nissan garage. About 4 months after I left the car for about 5 weeks in my garage with the handbrake down. When I went to drive it the brakes were locked!! Bit of more power and brakes unlocked with a not so friendly noise. But it drove well. This happened a few times and then I started noticing that my rear passenger wheel was making a noise on braking. Took it for a diagnostic test at same garage and they changed my rear disc brakes and pads as they said they were worn out - 700 pounds for that!! 2 weeks later it is happening again - used the car everyday but still getting locked brakes after a night in garage. Any idea of what it could be? Should I ask the garage to have a look at it again? Do I have a basis to argue that the diagnostic test and repair was a joke?!! DannyBoy Posted April 14, 2012 Share Posted April 14, 2012 I'd be pretty raging at any garage that changed the rear discs for a handbrake issue, as the handbrake uses seperate drums on the rear wheels, not the main disc brakes. Seems likely that they charged you £700 for something that was never going to solve your issue (if it is indeed handbrake related). This is not rocket science: the handbrake drums are clearly visible as being seperate from the disks, so i'd guess they may not even have done any diagnostics and fobbed you off DB PS: your Zed appears to be the only one ever made which has a handbrake that works too well rather than not at all, and is therefore probably priceless. Clarkie Posted April 14, 2012 Share Posted April 14, 2012 Don't use the handbrake. Do what i do and leave the car in gear. Although this can still leave the brake pads sticking, but i generally find just driving around for 5 minutes and doing a hard brake clears the surfaces and then all is well. cmck13 Posted April 14, 2012 Share Posted April 14, 2012 Not quite getting this, when you say you left the car in the garage over night with the "handbrake down" are you saying the handbrake was not on and that the brakes had stuck on by themselves? I agree with the comment about not using the handbrake and leaving in gear, a bit perplexed about the brakes still locking though, if you are using the hand brake I can understand they could stick but as said they are seperate to your disc brakes. £700 they didnt half screw you, do not go back to them again, yes make an official complaint. If you stick your location on maybe a member on here could either advise you on a decent garage or pop round and have a look at it. let us know what happens. edwmas Posted April 14, 2012 Author Share Posted April 14, 2012 Excuse my explanation! The car is left in the garage with the handbrake NOT on and the brakes stuck on by themselves. I always keep the car in gear rather than put the handbrake on. That is my question on why the brakes are still locking even if the handbrake is not on. Could it be a caliper problem? Could it be they did something wrong during the service?? I will be making an official complaint. Do you know who I need to put the complaint to? Is it Nissan customer service? I live in Lancaster. The handbrake shoes sticking on is a common problem, however if adjusted correctly then this issue should become less noticeable. Alex Cant argue with this for Alex is the man, but find a good local mechanic first to have a look if you dont think you can do it yourself.
