is there anything stopping me going down my local pipe benders and asking them to make me a 2.5 stainless exhaust up and then buying 2 hks back boxs or similar so it will go

Manufacturers who specialise in exhausts and have all the dimensions of the underside of the car still often manage to make systems that don't fit very well, I'd suggest the likelihood of your local pipe bender being able to do it any better is slim, especially with a dual which the Zed is not technically supposed to have meaning you'll have no stock parts to copy. But just my £0.02

the hardest bit would be the rear end because i could take off the exhaust hand it to him and he can could make a exhaust to pattern in what i want he says hes done it before the hardest part is the rear because like you said there are no parts to copy so would be compleatly custom. and the reason for doing it i dont see how 700 pounds can be justified just because the way its shaped when my local pipe bender says he will do it for 150 plus metal which he thinks will be about 100 so in total around 250

Bear in mind that the £250 he's quoted would only be for the y-pipe and mid-pipe replacement sections, you'd still have to find the backboxes/tips to go on them and I can't see them being that cheap. You say you don't think £700 can be justified, but ask yourself why people still pay it? Because you get something (for £700) which has been properly developed and tested and will work.

Out of interest, why are you after a dual?

speak to these guys, they build proflow exhausts, and they build the exhaust on the car as they go to your specification. heard good things about them and they are based in the midlands.

if your down south i would also reccomend hayward and scott, but they cost alot, but the work is good.

as for building a custom exhaust if you go to the right place, they'll do a better job than some of the off the shelf jobs as its a made to measure piece of kit.

like comparing an off the self suit to a tailored suit. but go to a bad tailor, get a bad suit. ;)

because i think it will give it a different note and ok they are tried and tested but the only real way to get power out of these cars is to go FI some thing i am saving up for. so the only thing im going to gain is a nicer louder sound and 700 is alot just for the noise it sounds awesome as it is i just feel it could do with being a little bit louder :teeth:

and im in the midlands so might be ideal that seems more like a price im willing to pay as well :D

that price of £400 is for a full cat back dual system on a jaguar XKR, verly long setup. i would expect the price for the zed to be either the same or more likely less.

apprently its about 2 - 3 hours work. so you book in, turn up, play on your phone for 3 hours, drive home. not only that you can choose your own tips, and the kind of noise you want.

heard positive things about them on several other sites. and although i haven't used them i would contemplate seeing them myself.
