Rear Speakers

I've had my JDM for about 4 months now, I replaced the bog standard cd player with a JVC MP3/DVD player a couple of months ago. I never actually knew the car had rear speakers until the guy i got to install the headunit mentioned that it would require some extra wiring work/conversion to connect them to the new headunit.....

MY question is....

Is it worth getting this extra work done to get the rears up and running? How long should i expect a specialist to take to actually do this? Are they a better quality than the fronts (which i find to be a bit lacking in mid range and harsh at loud volume anyway) or would i be better off investing in a better pair of front speakers?

Thanks for any advice.

hmmm the guy may well have been spinning me a line hoping to make some more "work" for himself (although he did seem reliable enough and didnt overcharge me for the work he did do). I just checked the wiring diagram in the instructions for the headunit and the connector on the back has 2 connections for a left and right rear.

I wonder if somehow the speaker wiring is damaged as the rear speakers have never worked from day 1, even with the standard head unit in. If i had of known there actually were speakers in the back i would have insisted that the dealer get them working before i received the car. I might get in touch with the dealer and see if he will stump up to get the speakers hooked up. What do you think the chances are of him coughing up?!?!

The rear speakers do make a difference to general sound though?!?

No chance of dealer doing anything , especially as you have put another head unit in :teeth:

I can hear my rear speakers, dont know if they make any difference to quality /tone / anything really I'm no ICE buff (only just got rid of my cassettes/ vinyl  )

Nice to have em working though

I might chance my arm with the dealer and see what he says, you dont ask you dont get.....

I may well just end up replacing the front speakers. I dont suppose anyone knows reliable ICE specialists in the North East of Scotland?!? :boxing:

You have more faith in used car dealers than me :teeth:

Forget about the rear speakers. Disconnect them, save your money and you will have a much better sounding system. You would be better off spending the money on an amp for the front components etc than rear speakers. Its bad enough in a hatch but there is NONONONONO need for them in cab the size of the Z.

Save your money and spend it on good components or amp

There is no need for them. I have had them in my 'younger' less knowledgable days but thats before I had heard a good system. I have since had some very good 2K+ systems

A decent system with front components & sub and you will never need rear speakers. There is only 1 scenario that rear speakers are needed and thats if you are playing with 5.1

Current system is stock but going in is...

Alpine Head Unit ~£200

Audison LRx 4.300 ~ £400

Focal Utopia 165W ~ £550

2x Focal Polyglass 21V2 ~ £300

rought cost of this system would probably be around £1500 including cables. pulled a lot of favours for this one so has not really cost me much.

Nice kit selection, have heard the Focals running off that amp and they do sound very nice. Make sure you get those tweeters up the a-pillar tho! :D

The one thing that should tell you if you NEED rear speakers, is how is music recorded??? In STEREO, not 4 channel or anything (unless Dolby 5.1 or DTS).

On that note, anyone know a reliable ice specialist in the south?

mmm Steve Jones you say may look him up, thanks :)

The guys that built my Volvo into a trophy winning sound off car could help. You prepared to travel up to sunny Berkshire??

The tweeters for now I have put in the stock location. Ideally I would like to build them into the A-pillers. Should be fairly simple as they are no different to normal. Your not getting mixed up with the top end focal Tweeters - the Focal Audiom-TLR. I would like to have them but they are far from cheap.

So far the total outlay on this install has been around £100 :D Not bad considering all I had at the start was mt head unit from my old car.
