Can anyone recommend a head unit...

Hi all

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend a head unit for under £250 that has the following-

Bluetooth hands free

built in mic

ability to connect to Bose amp/ sub

USB connectivity

most of that is standard fair but the inbuilt mic bit is what I am struggling with. I don't want to start running additional wiring for the mic, so if there are any out there that have it integrated and work well it would be a massive plus!

I know there are also additional leads required.

Thanks chaps!

Isn't the amp in the Bose system built into the double din head unit?

If I'm right then thats gonna be a problem for you running all those speakers etc of a head unit without an additional amp.

No, the Bose amp is separate from the head unit which houses the CD changer.

I just fitted the Pioneer DEH-7100BT to my Zed and am really pleased with it, but the mic is external. I have to admit, I don't recall seeing any head units with the mic for hands-free integrated. I would have thought the head unit wouldn't be a great position for the mic to "hear" you clearly.

EDIT: Some useful topics if you choose to fit an aftermarket HU...

Thanks for the replys, will do some reading on those topics.

There are head units with integrated mic - i have been looking at the Kenwood BT6544u single din system. You are right about the mic position, thats why i was interested to hear if anyone is using one with good results.

Just read the guide on your install btw, nicely documented.

The kenwood only has 2.5v pre outs so i wonder if i will be in the "not loud enough" camp come the end....

I found that whole issue to be very confusing and couldn't find any definitive answer to the question "do I need the line driver?". :bang:

In the end I decided all I could do was install without one and try it. I'm glad I did as it saved me the cost of the extra component, but I can only guess the reason I can get away without it is related to the high power output capability of the pre-outs. I'm sure someone out there has a better understanding of it than I do!

Regarding the position of the mic, I've never tried having the mic where the head unit is, so I'm only guessing... but the Zed's cabin isn't exactly the quietest ;)

+1 on the volts , ive only ever used my Z with 4v and now 5v pre outs but alot of models wil lonly have 2.5v so will be quieter. that pioneer looks lieka darn good piece of kit for the money too , you might get away wiht the mic placed on th HU as used to have mine just under the steering colum so you may be OK but its not the uglyest thing to have a small wire run a few inches accross the dash to the main cluster.

I would not get hung up on the mic wire. I have just put in my Alpine 103BT and it takes less than 5 minutes to put the mic up by the mirror with the cable all hidden.

If you went for one with a cable I can highly recommend the 103 unit (replaced by the 113 but its 99.99 the same unit so cheaper to pick up a 103)

Mic just slips onto the head liner. The liner is very easy to pull down a little to feed the cable along it. The A piller trim - you just need to remove the door rubber and than can pop off. Then the cable can be drawn down to the side of the dash. Zip ti ecable under dash across to center console. Feed into the center console.

Job done.

Thanks for that. There is already one installed that's dangling from the head lining. I'm guessing it's wired in to the original stereo but I'm not sure how yet as I have not removed anything. The car has a second phone cradle in it (standard type)... It's all a bit confusing!
