Tiptronic when is it safe to change down?????

Ok

 

The concept is great, we can change through the gears when we like, BUT!

 

I always feel like the trans is kinda hurting when I change down epecially when driving hard.

is the Fairlady Auto/Tiptronic box tough? or should I use with care...?

 

Anybody know the limits/stats etc?

Not an expert but I've got an '03 JDM Sunset and I treat it as I would a manual. :drive1

 

Saying that, you can't "feather" the gears in with a clutch so perhaps leave it another 20 yards as you head in to that blind left-hander doing 90 in 3rd thinking how scary it's going to be engaging 2nd :scare::teeth::scare::teeth::scare::teeth:

The box wont let you change down when its not safe, so you'll be fine. Im sure when nissan aded that feature, they built it within acceptable limits.

 

Manual mode is the way to go though... gives you full control of the car in the same way as a manual. You have nothing in D.

 

...you want to get a paddle shift kit though... much more fun!

If it works why don't you make a few and sell to us Tiptronic discontents and make a few bucks?? I'm sure you could shift loads at a sub-£100 fitted price.

Cos i've not made it to a standard if you know what i mean...

 

The wiring harness with the microswitches, yes i could make and sell those at 20quid a pop i spose, but the paddles themselves... jeez what a job they were. I made them from scratch out of some ford escort indicator stalks, and about 30 hours with a dremell...! Not something i want to do again!

 

I'll go and take some pictures actually and update my paddle shift thread.

Nope... it can only be installed on a JDM as they're the only cars with tiptronic!

 

The official kit is made by 'Works Bell', but like i said, its £400 after import taxes and exchange rates. Worth it though in my opinion, although it is just a toy - it will not increase the speed of your shifts, just means you have your hands on the wheel at all times.

 

I would argue that my home made kit looks almost as good as the official kit, even at 1/10th the price B)

you will never get full control in the same way as a manual car. :thumbdown:

Tools99 on the road you'll probably be fine. The only exception to the rule is on the track. If you chop a gear and it doesn't agree with the choice it will change to where it thinks you should be, especially in the lower gears, say at a hairpin.

 

Tippy box seems to be fairly resilient. I've only seen maybe two posts across most of the forums I peruse that talks about a defunct box. But that could be neglect (given some people are meataxes) or it may very well have been a genuine problem.
