Or take the easy way out & buy some new carbs
-
Highly unlikely the carbs will suddenly go bad if they were ok to start with mate. If its breaking down under load i would suspect the condenser if your still running points
brand new condensors, coil, dizzy, points plugs, compression is 11.5-11.6bar on all 6 cylinders, everything gapped correctly. The issue I had when I went to install the engine was one of the suction pistons was stuck, both have been removed, cleaned. I'm suspecting one of these could possibly be the cause.
After reading though these guides, which are pretty much the same as the others I have read & followed I have come to the conclusion that it could be:
An air leak, will try some carb cleaner over all the joints & hoses tomorrow,
Air filters, I tuned & ran the car without filters, then on my second run I had the filters installed
Suction piston getting stuck
Vacum advance getting stuck - will run the car without tomorrow
I'm sure I'll get to the bottom of it

speak to Mike Feeney at MJP you could also ask Fourways or ask on Z club forum
Thanks Steve, can't seem to access z-club tonight for some reason

Well this evening I've been tinkering with the sticky carb, stripped it down & rebuilt it, tuned the car, went for a drive. Got the car pulling strong, lots of torque, not revving it past 4.2k though.
managed to get a couple of pictures (forgot to close the door properly )
Then took it out again after investigating a knocking on the rear end to have lost all power above 2.5k So I need to investigate the issue further. Any SU carb experts on here?
-
Thanks again for all the positive comments
I still have lots to do before I show the car, off to see Parcelfarce again this morning, hoping that they have found my other box of goodies.

Cheers guys, it's far from finished, still lots of minor things to do, but most of them can wait. I need to enjoy the car this season
-
Went for a little test drive on some local quiet roads to identify any issues & get the tuning sorted.
All was good, I didn't die, kill anyone, or catch fire
A couple of things that I need to look into, one of the carbs is a bit sticky, geometry is a bit off, but booked in with Sly@Kaizer motors next week
& there is something loose on the back end. Far less than I was expecting :surrender

Right then, got all the rubbers in, well apart from the ones in the windows(doors) I will do them on phase 2 with the electrics & lights
Got the bonnet back on, grill & bumpers, new radiator today after Parcelforce buggered me around for the last 8days. They are an absolutely awful company to deal with
& fitted
Haven't had chance to take any proper photos as yet, but I did take a little clip this evening

Awesome, are you offering different thicknesses?

So Daz you maybe coming along or maybe having food
Any chance of towing the 240z along too!
Maybe all three

Great guide, can you do one for fitting those one piece wipers please? They really confuse me,

Right a decent update:
Had a few days off as I went to the ring on Thursday
Thought I had shaken off Rob in the 350z
But no chance of that
He won the race but not the marathon
Saw a nice 70' 240z competing in a classic rally that was going on out there
Went for a ride in a 991 GT3
This car was absolutely sensational I want one so badly, 10x better than the gtr in my opinion
I decided to come home after 2days @ the ring, I had my fun, done my laps, had a ride in the ring taxi, went hooning on the mountain roads, drank a 3litre beer. So got up on Saturday, loaded the car, done a quick lap @ 8am then headed back home 5hrs45mins door to door (ME7) including the tunnel. If someone can beat that I'll buy them a beer
Anyway back on topic, I wanted to get back to get some hours in on the 240, as I'm obsessed
So got to work with the interior, starting with the headlining. Got some white vinyl, & some intumescent foam, made a template & cut to shape. Then bonded one edge to windscreen seem (as it came out)
Then I got bored with that so decided to get the windscreen in, all new rubbers of course
Followed by the rear window
Then I decided to finish the wiring before getting involved with the interior trimming, new radio in
GRAHAM!!!!! I now have bluetooth handsfree & iPhone connectivity in a 240z
Got some black vinyl, cut for the side cills
Bonded the leading edge
& wrapped over
Nicely padded cills now
After this I stopped mucking about taking pictures & got the centre tunnel, padded out & vinyl fitted, followed by some additional floor insulation
Back to the roof area, templates & foamed the head lining
Then vinyl applied (picture before it was stretched
Rear plastics fitted, vinyl finished, door cars on & new seatbelt fitted
Wiper motor, mechanism fitted & calibrated
Rear light surround, numberplate & rear bumper fitted
Choke cables, speedo cable, & breather pipes fitted
Wheels on, fuel system primed, fuel in the tank, no leaks.
It's been a tough couple of days, but have achieved a lot.
Next are the remaining rubber seals, then aligning the locks & panels. Still waiting for the windscreen inserts, carpets, badges, radiator, starter & a few grommets to arrive from the US.

I think I might have a brand new starter motor somewhere in here... Wonder if Darren needs one
I only want it if you have a radiator to go with it

Well the gremlins are coming out now,
first the starter motor, went into the garage tonight to change all the fluids on the Porsche before the ring trip to find that the pit is now a hot tub. Radiator on the 240 is split, then got to work on the wiring loom to find that I have atleast 3 shorts, likely to be split wires on the old loom
Thankfully Torqen has come to rescue me, new starter motor & radiator on the way, hopefully by the end of the week. Awesome service as always

Darren (+ many helping hands etc, etc), she's looking more and more spectacular by the day. You should be very satisfied with your work
Thanks, I can't quite get to grips with how much I have learn't & achieved in the last few months. Sorry I couldn't make Wales this year( first one I have missed for 8years

Super fast work plumbing her back in, great to see this getting so close!
Can we have a vid of the first fire up????
Err I'll see what I can come up with. Unfortunately I don't think the first fire up is going to be as pretty & exciting as the previous ones on the SC & Turbo 350 & 370's we have done.
This car is old skool & fully rebuilt with all new components, need to check sparks on each cylinder, gap the points, then theres the manual manual fuel pump (need to prime the lines & float bowls, twin SU's to tune & sync, ignition timing also. Then valve clearances. It could take a little while from first crank to actually a good start & idle

Looks like it was an awesome day, sorry I couldn't make it, but had to get some decent hours in on the 240 this weekend

Then filled with coolant
Throttle pedal & linkage in
Then we were ready for the dash
After all the main connectors were put together we soon realised that the starter motor was buggered. Really wanted to turn it over, check for ignition & then add some fuel

Just got home, what an epic weekend, sooooooo much progress, all ready to be started!!! I'll let Darren elaborate and post the photos
Err yeah, starter motor is fibered we worked so hard this weekend to get to the point in firing the car up this afternoon to discover that the starter motor is knackered. Opened it up to investigate why there was continuity between all three terminals to find that its completely corroded inside. Can't be bothered to strip & rebuild it as it will be quicker to get a new uprated one from the US than to source the parts in the UK & spend the time rebuilding in.
So this morning I woke up late
opened the curtains to realise my labourer was still here
After some coffee we got back to the car
Fuel lines finished, coil in
Then Rob turned up & cleaned my horns, ARB & a few other bits, got bored & went for a drive in Adrians Cayman
I finished plumbing in the fuel breather system
Starting to look like a car now
Then Adrian got the cooling system back together
Then HT Leads installed (hopefully in the correct order)
Follwed by the viscous fan
Whilst I set about plumbing in the heater matrix & installing new grommets to the firewall
I let my guard down for one minute & my pipe was being polished
& the exhaust was on!!!
We then went about cutting & installing an intumescent foam firewall
& suddenly I thought I was in a dodgy movie
Turned out to be worse, I had Adrian plugging my holes
After the mucking about learning S about S, captain polish, cleaned up the voltage regulator & reinstalled
We then filled the GB & diff with oil
Got the heater matrix in

The bore scoring sucks dude, I will be taking a look at mine soon
But mine thankfully hasn't used a drip of oil in the last 5kmiles including a ring trip & trackdays, nor are my engine parts or underside corroded, suppose thats the difference between garaged & non garaged cars
