Where abouts are you?

Glad that all ended well. Funny how it wouldn't jump start tho.
Maybe the vw van was newish and had smart charging system so played funny buggers when connected to something else.

I felt like a monkey, pressing random keys on a type writer, but it seems to have worked.
Idle has now dropped from 950rpm to 750rpm. Not sure if that's right but it's better then it was.

It's just means moving the throttle butterfly. Pedal dance for idle speed reset will sort you right out *carried out on warm engine
So it moves itself during the process and you need to hear the sound of it to know it worked?

'Make sure that throttle valve moves during above 10 seconds by confirming the operating sound'
Not clear what this means
Anyone know what this means?
My car is idling 950rpm and I'm looking to reset the throttle.
How is it possible to move the throttle valve when it's inside the throttle body?

If its reasonably rust free underneath and drives ok, £1.5k is a bargain for a 41k milage Z. Spend £1k or 2 on bodywork and it's worth at least twice what it owes you all day long imo.

Horsham Developments did the strip down and rebuild. Think It was £1000 then whatever replacement parts needed on top. So you will save a lot doing it yourself if you can,
what i will add is i can easily tell that 3rd and 6th synchro have been done as goes into those gears so easily now, just wish i would have maybe had the whole lot replaced as others are noticeably a little bit worn (but still ok)
they did say its getting harder and harder to get gearbox parts now as the car gets older and i think they may have stopped producing any new synchros.
Cheers Glen, £1000 + parts is a lot.
The good news is my day job is designing gearboxes so I'm reasonably confident I can do the repairs myself. Just need to find the parts!

I wouldn’t worry, Facebook is about as cool now as MySpace was 10 years ago and will be devoured by people watching roundabout drifting on TikTok lives any day now. It’s 60% neighbourhood watch groups for curtain twitchers and right wing nutters 😂Such is the cycle of the generations!
Totally agree 👍

Hey Glen, what a great post, your Z is punching well above it's weight.
My gearbox crunches in 5th so I'm going to replace it's synchro ring when I get the time.
Did you fix your gearbox yourself or send it to a specialist?

New front drivers side wheel well liner (after it got ripped apart in a pothole) - New front and read passenger side wheel well liners - came apart after a garage didn't do my wheel bolts up. Turns out only 1 bolt was holding the wheel on. Lucky it didn't do more damage!
Good luck with the build mate. Your wheel story reminded me when I took my old MR2 to a garage in Coventry for a new a tyre. The bloke didn't hand start any tyre bolts and just gunned them in with an impact driver. Instantly crossed the bolt which seized but he just carried on trying to gun it till I came steaming over, then the Muppet blamed me for them being crossed.

Thought I'd share some pics and vids of the mighty Z popping it's cherry around the Silverstone track this afternoon.

Yep, you heard that right. The exhaust i have is too loud and i know it's going to hurt my head when i drive for more then 30minutes.
Does anyone have a stock exhaust they want to sell?

You are correct no need for 6th gear but I had dropped off the car with him the night before and drove it to the m.o.t centre so ! What happened was, as he leaving the mot he came to far out into the road so he snatched reverse and missed it and found 6th hence the problem.
I suppose he did the obvious and checked the linkage was ok?
If that's ok, it sounds like it might be an internal gearbox issue.

Hi there everyone I've not been on the forum for a while as I've had car troubles . I did take the car out last year japfest and maybe one other meeting. I had to get the mot done so I took it to the normal chap who I've known for over twenty years ,so I dropped off the car and later on he gives me a ring stating that it's passed, the mot but it's stuck in 6th gear, what !.
I was to say the least upset with the position I was in, so I parked up and left it for a few months and investigated the issues and was thinking about how to improve the clutch.
Just wondering why an MOT test would require driving the car fast enough for 6th

Just passed it's MOT. This Z is the gift that just keeps on giving 🙂

Too soon for a leisurely Sunday drive out, but not for a prolonged high rpm session at the biggest circuit in the UK
Haha, yeah it sounds a bit strange when you put it like that, but I'll be taking it fairly easy round the track. It's all about the experience and having fun, but next year I'll be hammering it.

Beautiful work, very well done!!! Chuffed for you pal and now a very well sorted engine. We a steady drive out to Anglesey next Sunday if you fancy 😁
I saw that thanks Dave, but I think it might be a little too soon for the mighty Z but I'm definitely up for Japfest tho.

Well that's it all done really. Fitted the new valve cover gasket and put back the air collector etc back on, no leak!
Ran it up to temp a few times and bled it a few times and nice hot air now coming out the air vents.
The only thing to do now is change the mineral running in oil with new synthetic.
Next week I'll be putting as many miles on it as I can ready for the track day.

They'll be plenty of helmets available for hire, bring a balaclava. Valid card driving license will be fine too.
Pass on the left and enjoy
Cheers Dave, I was about to buy a couple of second hand ones on eBay.
Idea of the hire cost, roughly?

Nice looking Z, good luck with the sale

Oil leak solved, yes Dave, you were right, part of the gasket had slid out while fitting and was actually being sliced by the cam lobe!
