  1. A visit to The Tower of London if you can possibly make it is a must.

I have visited twice, once last Thursday evening where I was there for the Roll Call of names - lasting some 25 minutes.

There were easily 30 - 40, 000 people and you could have heard a pin drop.

A dramatic sight, made even more moving knowing someone lost their lives for every poppy planted.

They have all now been sold too, but there are the usual poppies for sale, plus some beautiful cermaic ones in all guises inside the Tower Shop.

  2. Although no longer in this situation, when I was married we only had one pot which everything came from.

Worked fine by us, we trusted each other and both had times without work and did not think twice about supporting each other.

We were also fair financially on the split and infact are still friends - some 20 years later.

I have friends who have seperate accounts and literally one can afford to go on holiday and does while the other who can't afford to go stays home. They even say in company, I would love to join you but my partner can't afford it !!!! What ? ! Odd to me, but then I have always been in similar salary earnings too.

  3. Although the temperature drop is advised.

Can be worth the extra tyre wear which is lost if putting them on in warmer temperatures as I would consider swappping sooner if ongoing rain is forecast though - much more grip.

  4. I have followed this thread since yesterday and am still astounded that we are not being given the detail of which Garage this is.

If the owner of this car - Randy-Baton has made an error in his assumptions or not provided us with the full detail - then fine - just admitt it - we all make errors and hopefully learn along the way

But to continue like this - is very unfair to other owners and quite possible the garage in question.

If I was a mod on here - quite frankly I would lock this thread - it is doing nothing - but winding people up - who on the whole actually only want to assist another member and ensure they too do not get ripped off in the future.

  5. My Builder/Carpenters and the like - offer to do a quote. They explain they will take into account everything on the job going wrong - so in effect 'cover themselves.

I have an option to pay this price irrelevant of how long the job takes of which they only estimate. Or, I can take the risk and go for their Day Rate.

The Day Rate - would include working an 8am to 4.30 day approx, and collecting stock etc within this time frame. They usually stop for a 30 minutes lunch break.

Being in a house that has only me as the 3rd owner in 48 years and knowing it has not been previoulsy botched. I go for the Day Rate.

One of my Clients (I do his Accounts),is an Electrician - He Quotes - then reguarly if the job came in at less time, half a day or more - he reguarly reduces the labour element of the job. Although this works for him - personally I totally disagree both on a professional front - of being my client, but to me - A Quote is a Quote - otherwise it is an Estimate - which can change. The latter often needs explaining to Clients.

My business, I charge by the hour, and if I have done 2 and 1/4 hours work I charge for that exactly. I do not charge out my Lunch Time, but I do charge my travel time from home plus mileage. I am completely upfront about all my charging. When questioned about the home travel to work and mileage - I politely explain - I would be staying at home otherwise and not having the expense myself.

Usually if my price is queried, I will not take on the client - you can almost guarantee there will be problems further down the road. While mentioning all this and hopefully assisting. I also explain in detail My Credit Terms - which are 7 days from receipt of invoice and advise I will be chasing these if not paid - which I do at 15 days. I advise I will not be working next month for them without the previous month paid. All this may sound harsh to some. But in my book, business is business - if you want a professional............and all that......... I am also fully booked.

I do appreciate differing trades have to operate in differing ways, but..........hopefully there might be something in all that to consider going forward ?

    Good Luck.

  6. I too am self employed.

Although I agree with you, sounds like this customer will not, no matter what way you present this to him.

So if I may suggest on this occasion you accept this and reduce your rate accordingly for the days so you get paid rather than holding out and not getting paid.

Then put to down to lesson learned.

  7. WackyWill - It was my reading that thread - that made me think i should actually start one of my fantastic experience !!

I can't tell you how much it angers me - complete knobs on the road, track etc.

I really would make everyone re-take their Driving Test every 10 years, and limit drivers on age to horsepower.

Of course I woud not have wanted that when I was early in my driving days but then the roads were not as clogged up as they are now.

  8. I didn't pay for it - just saved my Tesco Clubcard Vouchers, cashed them in to Everyman Motorsport for the Day.

I do have a Tesco Credit Card with inbuild Clubcard which I use quite heavily as I manage to use it for work too and reclaim my expenses back ( I pay it off each month) and I rarely use in Tesco's itself. But it seriously works and does not take long to build up enough for a decent day.

I will always wait until I have enough to get as much time on Track as possible to make it properly worthwhile and usually manage at least 2 Track Day Outing a year and often more.

Have to say, I have been going to Everyman Motorsport for a few years now and Wow have they come on. Many more cars available. Yes, its busy, but it seems to work. No speed restrictions, no limited cars. Just have to be careful not to get drawn into buying the Video (£35)( or photographs (£25) - unless you want to of course.

I would send Santa a Note if I was you.

  9. I finally drove a GTR 2 weeks ago at Prestwold, only 4 laps, so about 8 miles. :D

OMG - Do I want one or what though?

Phenomenally fast, excellent uptake on the throttle, super paddle shift gearing, no hesitations.

Absolutely fantastic. Exact Model – sorry I don’t know.

I do know I attracted the attention of the Instructor in the other GTR on Track as I overtook his car.. ...

He came up to give me a big thumbs up – for my driving technique and speed - apparently the one I was driving was 80hp less than his, but I managed to blitz his driver !!!

Also drove the Porsche 911 (997 Tiptronic) Driven several before and was encouraged to drive this in Auto (Not something I would usually do- And won’t be doing again. )There was a lag – split second maybe, but it was there.

Finally the Aerial Atom. This would have been better I believe if I had been a little taller and not so many cushions.

A good experience – but not for me. I had a very bad experience in a Open Top car some years , so much prefer Coupe’s.

GTR won hands down !! :D

Think I will be booking one of these again, along with an R8 and McLaren next time - shame I will have to wait till Spring.

I was asked if I had thought Racing – if only......... my funds would stretch that far.

Might just be checking the running costs of the GTR though !!!

  10. Regarding resting his elbow on the window - if this guy is as large as is being suggested, then he would need the window open - as surely there is just not enough room to do so ?

This is not something I have ever known to be allowed on an Track Day at any circuit in the UK that I have visited.

    .

  11. I most of all have missed my MkII Golf GTI 16V - with bad boy big bumpers.

Was superbly fast for the time and handled like a dream.

Would have been worth keeping too for the amount of interest there is out there for MKII's

Always wanted the Alpha GTV and the Capri 2.8 injection.

Could not afford to run the Alpha and could not afford to buy the Capri at the time.

I have a soft spot for the Hillman Imp as this was my first car - which had to be sold - as there was nothing further to skim off the head !!! :-)

Am seeming to keep hold of my cars now - get too attached !!!

  12. Well, what an amazing 2 days at Goodwood Revival.

Talk about brain overload with all the imagery of everything vintage. I doubt there were 10% of the people who did not dress up for the occassion.

I managed 1940's one day and 1960's the next.

One of my friends had a beautiful 1967 Daimler for which he had specialist parking amongst others of the same. WE must have spent 3 hours one day in this car park alone. So many beauthiful vintage/classic cars - I do not even know which my favourite was.

The racing - was spot on - we took Grandstands one day close to the chicane. It is hard to believe how hard those cars worth a fortune were being pushed and also looked incredibly hard to keep under control. The BTCC boys were definitely giving it everything. Sad to see a few accidents with cars quite wrecked - but most importantly in both cases I saw drivers were fine.

The shops, garages, the vinatge fun fair, The old style Tesco - with Green shield stamps, the Paddock, Seeing Jackie Stewart - everything was top notch.

Despite the cost - I think with FOS this will become another regular on my calendar. Well done Lord March !!

  13. I am going, for Friday and Saturday and will be staying nearby.

Also been to the Festival of Speed masses of times, but a first for the Revival.

Vintage wear is all ready. Glad to see the weather has improved dramatically.

Already been expensive so far, expect it to continue throughout the weekend, but have little doubt it will be more than worth it.

I have always arrived at the FOS really early and left as the gates are closing.

Has anyone been to this event and FOs and able to throw any tips, pointers etc.

    Cheers

    Wendy

    Certainly looking forward to it.

  14. Nice little drive out yesterday chaps, shame the roads were quite so busy in parts. Some beautiful villages in the area.

Thanks for the link Nissanman312, really looks interesting. That price is a bit steep when you consider its each, but then I guess the Hotels are plush, certainly some of the areas visited are none to cheap. Just need a passenger for these things, one for price, but too that is some considerable mileage in a relatively short time, especially as personally I think that indication of mileage is a bit short of the actual mileage of that route. Might be wrong.

I can't make October's drive, but hopefully it will still be dry for November, or as we discussed perhaps early one evening.

  15. Difficult one this.

Done 100's of thousands of miles as a pillion, see masses of incidents. The rider was full on speed freak, but good rider who I trusted - well up to 120mph !! (After that I could not hold my head on :-) !!!

i cannot get my head around recording your riding speeds either................

I do not think it is easy trying to judge the speed of an oncoming bike. Due to my experiences I just accept they are all in excess of the speed limit and to never underestimate them.

Sadly there are many drivers out there with little or no experience of bikes and bikers. Then many riders and drivers really do not read the road, the conditions or have much awareness generally of anything around them.

Watching brake lights coming on necessarily on a motorway is proof enough of this - no reading of the road ahead going on there.

Part of me - really does due to actions and speeding of the biker - think blame is split here.
