I've got my eye on a mini on ebay now. Also looking at a 300zx but I reckon that will be a fair bit out of my price range.

just a thought but if the op has little mech knowledge and experiance it is also likey he has no tools ,strange no one mentions the cost of building up a basic tool kit ,half decent tool kit will cost the price of a shed, i do apprieciate that once you have the tools they yours for life but worth mentioning you are going to need a fair amount of tools to do the work

It's amazing how all thoughs 10 quid here and 10 quid there tools rack up when you realise you've not got the right socket or spanner.

 

Thing is, you've gotta start somewhere right? it was advised somewhere to get a starter kit and then get the tools I need when I need them.

Right, I think I'm going to be looking at one of the following:

 

- Land Rover Defender 1985-1995

- Land Rover Discovery 1990-1995

- VW Golf GTi mk3 1991-1995

- Toyota Celica circa 1995

 

Looking at £200 to £400 for a non-runner and £400 to £600 for something I can drive away.

 

Does that sound sensible?

I think a starter kit is about £80 and then i have friends who have bits and pieces i can borrow or build up over time

 

 

I will only have about £600 so i don't know if can get a landrover for that and if i did i wouldn't know where to start.

hah, my girlfriend isn't your typical blonde. She loves the zed as much as me and won't have a car with an engine smaller than a 2.5 litre because they're all too slow

 

I also want a drive I won't be ashamed to be seen in when I do get it running.

 

So now I know what to look at the question is where can I pick up a cheap motor? about £500

I live just down the road from you in Macclesfield and have been working at Lostock Gralam.

 

Nearly bought a car from Lostock the other week. It was an Alfa Romeo sportwagon. Breaks didn't work though and only found that out when we went out for a test drive. Got a shogun instead for the same price.

 

The Mx5 sounds like a popular choice. I shall have a look this week. Gonna see if I can get one sometime in May

How about a classic? Something that isn't sought after so is cheap but might need work to be roadworthy. They are normally simple, bits can be plentiful and it could be interesting....

 

What did you have in mind? Jag and Mercs would be fun but I imagine expensive for parts

This is the problem, I don't know exactly what I want. In the long run I want to have enough knowledge and expertise to be able to fix most minor and some major problems with my cars and also make modifications, whether it be bodywork (e.g. fitting wings), electrical (e.g. installing a satnav), engine (this is where I lack most knowledge, so much so I can't even give a reasonable example of a mod I might make, I'll go with fitting a plenum spacer).

 

I leave the house at 8:00 and get home at 18:00, me and my gf have 2 dogs and 4 horses so time isn't something I have during the week. It's more a few hours at the weekend when I have the time.

 

I also have a shogun but I wouldn't want to tinker with that either as I need it for getting to the stables, the roads are NOT suitable for the zed if I missed it up.

 

I'm not short of cash and don't spend my money anywhere else (other than the pub and snowboarding) so spending it fixing a shed/breaking a shed isn't a big deal. If I can get it running and sell it I'd be happy.

 

Ideally I'd get an mx5 or something relatively cheap like that, which has failed an MOT and so I know what it is that needs fixing.

I wasn't looking at anything more than this to be honest; I was thinking of getting a breaking one too. I imagine the feeling of getting it running by your own hands is pretty excellent

 

You've got is wrong about insuring SORN vehicles though, you either tax + insure or you SORN and don't insure.

I work in Knutsford by the way... i've literally just come back from the town center in my zed.

I like in Pickmere, but I imagine no-one would know where that is, so Knutsford is the next line on the address, work in Birchwood myself so get to cruise down the M6 every day in my zed.

After recently buying my zed I'm now too scared to do anything with it in terms of complicated mods, just in case I mess up big time and my girlfriend castrates me.

 

As a novice when it comes to the automobile, my knowledge is limited to driving them, washing them and putting that expensive stuff in that makes it move.

 

So what I was thinking, as a bit of a project was to get a cheap car and do it up, learning as I go along. Problem is I don't know what's best to do this with; I know minis are pretty simple and plenty of people spend time doing them up.

 

Also, since you have to insure SORN vehicles it would have to be something with a smallish engine that's cheap to insure; anywhere from an 800cc to a 1400cc.

 

So, any ideas?

I used to really dislike impersonal London however the last few times I've been I've had the chance to do toursity things and I like it, always something to see and do. SWMBO keeps on at me to go see a show, will have to organise that one.

 

Wednesday through Friday was great. Streets were empty and we just walked in to pubs, bars and restaurants. Saturday was like all hell broke loose. I was tempted to sew my pockets closed when trying to walk down the street.

 

Plus, after waiting 20 minutes to be seated in a restaurant, my girlfriend ordered a pizza and was given an oven cooked Chicago Town Pizza (at a cost of £12.50!!!!!). And it's not as if it just tasted like one; i double checked the menu and it was an actual Chicago Town pizza, this one to be precise:

I am at squeeky bum time at the moment. Last Friday (13th) I overtook a lorry on a dual carriageway only to see a policeman pointing his gun at me once i got in front of it.

 

If he just had a gun and no camera then you shouldn't need to worry. You know when you've been caught, the bulbs they use to take the pictures are very bright and noticeable, even in daylight.

 

Plus 80 on the speedo is about 76 in reality. The allowance differs in every county too, so some places you can only get away with 5% over the limit. Others you can get away with 10%; in which case you can do 77mph without being done.

Yeh, unfortunately I don't help myself. I wrote of one car a couple years ago (6 days after buying, whoops) and then the same year I rear ended someone else on an icy day.

 

I also have my girlfriend who reversed in to someone (not literally though, she doesn't run down old ladies in the carpark; just in to the back of a Tigra, which probably deserved it).

 

That plus the 3 points I have for doing 35 in a 30 zone and just turning 25 you get raped. But all those will be wiped off come next March and I'll have 3 years no claims so hopefully it will be sub £1k.

Just priced this up ready for my first attempt at this routine. Everything is pretty much Meguiars and all in all it costs about £100. That seems a little steep; does anyone know where I can get some sort of discount on these products at the moment?

Back from my trip, great time!!

 

Ended up going to one of the angus steal houses near piccadilly. Dunno what everyone complained about, it was great!!!

 

Went to loads of bars and ate loads of food too, including some weird wrap at 3am

 

Also went to the ripley believe it or not museum, weird place but well worth a visit.

 

Not too happy about my last day though. We walked through st james' park feeding the squirrells when one little b*stard scratched my hand and unfortunately i'm not up to date with my tetanus so a big beedle for this week, joy.

 

On the plus side, back driving my zed in the glorious sunshine today

I know it's a long shot but there seems to be a lot of people from the very north. My service book has my car down as being serviced about 3 times in Glasgow. I own a 57 plate 350z roadster in blue, the reg ends CMK.

it was more the warranty, full service, tax and mot i liked. id really like one with a warranty. i can spend up to 10k if needed

 

I just bought my roadster, which isn't the GT unfortunately, so I know you can't necessarily compare directly, and paid £9,975. Its a 57 reg, 32k miles and has 6 months tax, 6 months MOT, fully serviced, new brake discs. I also got the next 3 services and MOTs for a £320 one off fee.

 

You can get so much more for your money, just keep looking and be patient.
