  1. Mine is my only car and I drive it most days.

     

    I could never make the maths add up to have the zed as a weekend toy. My insurance is just too high even on limited mileage quotes.

     

    I also think it's a great car to use every day, very usable.

  2. A colleague of mine bought a GTR to use everyday (20k a year!) and absolutely loved it said by far the best car he had ever owned.

     

    Recently though the running costs caught up with him and he decided to sell up. He was looking at £1200 for three, £1500 fir brakes and £2500 to extend the warranty.

     

    I think if all 3 hadn't come at once he would have kept it but £5200 on top of fuel (19Mpg) and 6k servicing was too much.

  3. If you plan to replace both parts then no, but I didn't see a need to replace the carrier (the part on the left of the pic) as well as the bearing (the part in the middle).

     

    Separating these is what a puller is needed for, and then a press to insert the carrier into the new bearing. Not knowing this beforehand has made this job a lot more difficult :dry:

     

    When I do the other side I will have a garage on standby and nip down to get them to remove the old bearing and press the new one on. Lesson learned.

  4. Ah yea on second look I can see they are all views from the back.

     

    I could get the bearing off the car (I hit the bolts once loosened to do this) but then how did you get the part inside the wheel bearing (the bit the drive shaft goes through and has the wheel bolts on it-the part on the left in the picture below) out of the bearing? I take it you had a puller?

  5. Well that will explain why things didn't go as you you described and why I could really do with a bearing puller!

     

    All,

     

    For info rear bearings are a DIY job but you will need a bearing puller (or a friendly local garage) to remove the bearing carrier from within in the old bearing.

     

    I also removed the drive shaft to get enough access to the bolts holding the bearing housing in place. Alex says it can be done without this but although I couldn't manage it. I could get a 3/8s socket and extension on (through a universal joint for some) but I didn't have a big enough breaker bar to undo them. Removing the drive shafts isn't a big job though.

    Walk on mate - buyers market and there are plenty around.

    + 2 there are too many 'what ifs' ; Missing service history, modified exhaust, current owner less than one year...

     

    Wait for the right one to come up and haggle hard. In the current market you should get a good price.

  7. I had this problem and it turned out to be a dodgy coil pack. It started just as you described until it started getting worse and would drop to five cylinders intermittently.

     

    A friendly mechanic at the local dealer help to figure out which cylinder with a diagnostic tool that could shut down each cylinder in turn. You just have to get the local garage when it's running badly (Twice i went the garage and it was working fine by the time i got there!) and they are feeling generous enough to diagnose it.

  8. Bit of a thread resurrection here but...

     

    I've had a quote to move the position of the boiler from upstairs to the kitchen (the kitchen is below the room the boiler is in but it needs to moved to the other side of the room) and replace the boiler for a 30kw Viessmann Boiler. Price quoted is £1850.

     

    Would be very interested to hear people thoughts on the boiler and if they think the quote look sensible (i know it's hard to tell with so few details but gut feel is useful).

  9. Hi HeadPhones,

     

    I have a had a gearbox and diff oil change at L&G recently. The gearbox has been fine since although my car has developed a slight wine that increases with speed. I've not figured out what is causing it yet but the diff is a possibility. There was no wine before the change although it didn't start straight after.

     

    It could be tyre noise as the tread is getting low (anyone had this??) or a wheel bearing although it doesn't change volume when cornering like i would expect with a wheel bearing.

  10. My understanding was that there were too. The horizontal one come as standard on UK GT cars and fixes to the boot to stop people seeing between the boot lid and th strut brace.

     

    The vertical one fits under the strut brace and divides up the boot.

     

    I'm sure someone will be along to correct me soon if I'm wrong.
