A random plastic box behind bumper?

I was cleaning out my radiator of the leaves, and recognised theres a scoop type box to the left of the radiator (left being drivers side as you look at the car". I wasnt able to see where it went to, but by the looks of it, it doesnt do anything. Is this to stop stoned hitting inside engine area? or does it have a purpose

I have a "scoop box" on both sides. No idea what they are for.
