varley16 Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Evenin all, about a year ago I posted a topic on careers after I got treated like poop, and here I am again, I've gone from a tech in the motor trade to service advisor, I love the job but very stressful, I have no problem working hard, but there is issues where I work that don't help the situation, I'm starting to think outside the motor trade now, the problem is the motor trade is all I know, I can't even think what other possibilities there is. My job history so far: I started as an apprentice at jaguar, and then became senior tech, i was there for about 9 years, I then moved away so had to change job, I then went to Ford as a tech for 8 months, then I went to Honda as a tech, where unfortunately I had issues, this lasted 3 months before I returned to Ford as a service advisor, I've now been there 8 ish months. I've been offered a job in sales after the sales manager approached me after watching me with customers, but with a baby on the way the hours would not suit me, which is a shame as I've never been approached for a job. After being a service advisor this would open a lot more doors, but to what? What is out there that is I could go into with my experience? Thanks for any help. varley16 Posted June 21, 2012 Author Share Posted June 21, 2012 Well it's 12k basic, the rest commission, so without having any experience it worries me, I've spoken to the commercial side and I think they earn 18k basic and normal hours, which I would go of so I've mentioned it so we shall see about that, no jobs going there yet though. Allan Zada Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 I work in an audi main dealer and the salesmen have a similar basic to that, but a couple of them earn £40k+. Dont get me wrong they are always at work but if you dont mind the work the money is there. But with a baby on the way it could be hard. Chesterfield Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 As per the last two posts, if you have/gain experience in sales, then that could open doors outside the motor industry in any field you like. Service advisor gives you experience with customers and your technical knowledge means you should understand the products. If you can talk to customers well (as has been spotted by others that have suggested sales to you) and when you talk to a customer you can answer any techy questions they may have, then I would think thats a good base to be a good salesman from. If the person Im talking to doesnt know the first thing about the product Im wanting to buy, I wont buy it. If they know their product, I am likely to buy from them. That applies to cars just as much as it does anything else, possibly even more so. As above too, there is very good money to be made in sales. I did a sales focused role within Financial Services before moving in to training, and while I was very good at it, I did find it stressful. I know some people who are car salesmen and they say they're under a lot of pressure to perform. However, work hard and the rewards will definitely be there! Sarnie Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 The thing is, once you move into sales, you learn your trade (sales wise) and then you could move into any sales job out there! Once you have a track record in sales, it proves you can sell which is one of the hardest things to master. coldel Posted June 21, 2012 Share Posted June 21, 2012 Hey mate, hope things are well I would ask yourself the question, if someone hadn't approached you would you have considered Sales as a career route yourself? Have you been thinking about it? Is it something you have thought of in the past as something you reckon you would be good at? Might help you understand if you really want to do it or not. Its all good though, as someone said previously effectively being head hunted for a job role is great for your confidence and shows you are doing well in your current job. Clearly though, even if you didnt know it, you have wanted a move out and this has awakened that thought. Have you looked at all types of work around the company?
