Would like to create own family website - advice ?

Hi

I want to create a family website for myself with some part being public (more as a historical archive) and something for my daughter when she grews up so she knows her family history whilst i can still remember stuff and have access to photos etc

 

So i would like to ask the gurus on here if they can suggest a reliable and secure provider etc that offers a good deal on hosting my own site?

 

Someone has mentioned Googlesites and its free etc but there must be some catch?

 

Any ideas greatfully received.
