Whump whump whump sound coming from front end

The diagnosis is the front passenger side wheel bearing is shot.

Diagnosis process: Went out for a test drive with the mech who at first couldn't hear the noise. I could hear it quite clearly, but I guess I was attuned to it. Anyway, we tipped into a roundabout and I told him to push it a little going in. This re-produced the noise at a level audible anough for the mech.

He went back and checked the wheels again. Tyres were fine, but on full lock (to the right), he gave the passenger side wheel a shake and found the bearing was done. It was nice and tight in the straight ahead position (which is what I tested).

So, the moral of the story is: When checking your bearings, try it while a mate holds the wheel at full lock as well.

I'm getting the hub assy replaced next Friday. Hopefully this will solve the problem.

Hi lads and lassies,

Lately my 2004 Zed has been exhibiting a "whump whump whump" sound when driving along. It sounds very much like the classic flat tyre sound. Or like a car driving over the segment gaps of a long bridge. A rhythmic "whump" that increases in speed with road speed.

The sound was originally only prevalent when taking corners, but lately it happens in a straight line as well ... and seems to get worse when the car gets warm. The sound doesn't go away when braking, so I'm pretty sure it's not brake related.

The tyres are in good nick. All 4 brake discs were replaced in the last 4 months (with new pads of course).

I've tried the classic wheel shake test to test the bearings and all seems tight. Spinning the wheels by hand don't seem to produce any weird sound either ... but I'm not ruling out bearings.

Does any of this sound familiar to anybody?

I'm probably going to bring the car in to Nissan in the next few days because I can't diagnose this sufficiently. But I thought maybe some of you good people might have an idea what it is, or maybe able to suggest some more tests I could perform to diagnose the problem.

Thanks for reading,

Al.

I immediately though wheel bearings. Is it coming from one side of the car?[/quote

Get in! i can also do a full MOT by kicking the tyre.

Yeah, the maddening thing is that I thought it was coming from the drivers side. Even when sitting in the passenger side with teh mech driving. I was holding out for bearings myself as well. It's a simple fix. We'll see if this fixes the problem.

Yup, glad you updated it with the fix as well, thank you, so few do so.

I did think bearing at first as well, but as you checked it when straight, it's all i would have done as well. Good to know you need to check it when locked over.

I think one or both of my rears might not be so well, i can hear a slight version of this but only at 60 and above.
