Steering wheel controls only work with wheel turned

I thought my steering wheel stereo controls were completely broken until yesterday when I accidentally changed the volume while the wheel was turned.

Turns out, half a turn to the left and they work.

The cruise control buttons have always been ok. I'm assuming it is a faulty connection somewhere, any ideas where to start looking?

Pull the wheel apart and check the connections are tight.

Are you think the steering column trim or the silver steering wheel trim?

Either way am I at risk of accidentally setting off the air bag or anything like that?

Whatever gives access to the connections, I can't remember but I suspect you'd be better off just removing the wheel and working from there. 

 

Disconnect the battery first before removing the wheel if you're worried about it going off.
