Smokey Z

I purchased my 350z in November and unfortunately issues have cropped up. It leaks oil at a tremendous rate. Some is ending up at the bottom of the engine bay but it also smokes terribly from  the exhaust and the smoke has a strong smell to it which is probably also oil. I can't really drive it quickly anymore without it misfiring. My mechanic doesn't usually deal with 350z's and he said he can't honestly give me a solid price to fix it. If it was a common car he sees all the time he'd have no issues giving me a quote for what needs doing. He told me it probably needs new piston rings and head gasket. I also think it needs a new rocker cover because it had oil in the spark plugs and that seems to be the common fix for a 350z with that problem. I am rather intimidated by giving him a thumbs up to do the work without any kind of reference what price it will be. If anyone has an idea of how much it should roughly cost I'd be greatful. Thanks:)

Very simple, very straight forward, but potentially expensive:

(1) Do not entrust your car to someone who does not know there way around a 350Z.

(2) Find a specialist to provide you with an informed diagnoses and an estimate.

(3) If the estimate is for an engine rebuild, then weigh up the cost of this against a known low mileage pre owned engine.

(4) Remember that an estimate is exactly that, the specialist will only provide a written quotation once the engine is removed and stripped.

(5) Very rarely will you get away with just piston rings, so build into the estimate the price of 6 new pistons.

(6) For guidance, depending on the diagnoses, the worst case scenario will be 2k - 3k

(7) If service history is unknown, be prepared for extras ie: clutch and fly, valve guides, chains, tensioners, oil pump etc.

Preowned engines are in stock at the minute, and all engine rebuild parts are also in stock.

Just drop me a PM once you have your diagnoses/estimate if I can help further.

Eek! Those are scary numbers! Am I right in thinking putting a new engine in usually far less work than taking the existing one to bits? Are your used engines all in good condition? Thanks for your detailed response:)

Yes, less work, but the advantage of a build is that you will know exactly what you have got.

My engines are in great shape and have come from known vehicles and come with a 3 month parts only warranty from date of purchase.

However, best to follow my previous advice.

Both options may work out at about the same price, depending on what the issue/issues are.

Will have to try and find a specialist then!  Thanks Alex, I'll pm you just for an idea of the parts prices should it be worst case scenario.
