Rear strut bar rust

Had a bit of a strip down in the back today and noticed that both sides of the strut "bar" have rusted and split through the first layer. Is this a common thing? I'm sure a dab of weld will sort it, but seems like an odd place for it to appear

Not common.

 

Get the angle grinder on it with a sanding disc to establish how bad it is.

 

Hopefully you will find good metal underneath.
