  1. Just wondering why people are using a 5w-40 oil when the Z should have a 5w-30?
  2. Now in stock as from today (and it took 10 weeks for them to arrive here) The very new Amsoil EAO-20 oil filters still at the old SDF-20 price. There isn't a better filter available anywhere, infact there isn't one that even gets close. Stats are appx 98% at 15 microns compared with paper filters 37%. Only available here http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/by- ... l#fullflow with details here https://www.amsoil.com/storefront/eao.aspx Contact admin for a discount code and get an extra 10% off The correct oil is a 5w-30 not a 40 weight.
  3. I don't think you will find that GTX is a quality real synthetic. Better than most barrels dealers have though I'm sure. Best treat yourself to a bit of quality next time around, if it must be castrol try Edge, its what they recommend but Motul and Amsoil are better.
  4. Bargin I'm sure! You can get a good oil for that money and still have change. If you get a mineral oil get a 40 weight ie 10w-40, you will need the thicker oil to get the protection. If you are getting a quality synthetic get a 30 weight like a 5w-30 or even a 0w-30. Why a 30 weight? because being a synthetic it will be stronger than the 40 weight mineral oil, being thinner it will have less 'pumping losses and therefore run cooler and with a bit more power and a few more MPG. Not only all of this but is will last longer. All these savings with a full synthetic make a mineral oil expensive by comparison! The only downside is the initial cost. IMHO there is little point in putting a 40 weight synthetic in the Z as you won't be taking advantage of the superior oil. Check these people out:- http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/ & http://www.opieoils.co.uk/performance_l ... motul.aspx
  5. Oil filters are a black art in their own right. They can have one or two valves or none at all. It is very rare for people to know or even ask about this. Most filters have a 'blow-off' valve which opens when there is a pressure differential from one side of the filter to the other; this will open and save your engine if the filter gets blocked to any degree. Better to have unfiltererd oil than no oil! However on start up it will open and allow unfiltered oil through for a very short time until the pressures are balanced. This is why on an engine with a filter you will still find small particles embedded in the bearings. The pressure differential required to open the valve can vary considerably. Some filters have a 'drain-back' valves; this isn't to stop the oil draining from the top of the engine but to stop the oil comming out of the filter if the car is left for some time. As is easily imagined on start up it takes a small amount of time for oil to feed the bearings, if the filter needs to be filled first then this is not good. Some have no valving at all! Might appear strange but then some manufactures fit bypass and even over pressure valves in their cars oil filter blocks. This might be a clue that some of those who realise simply dont trust after market filter manufactures. Problems can arise if you move away from manufacturers supplied filters, yes the aftermarket filter is usually cheaper and fits but...... Problems also arise when things like oil coolers etc are added to the oil system They may cause the pressure differential to increase beyond the point that the filter opens and then you dont get the oil filtered anymore yet you still have a nice filter inplace! And when you use a thicker oil than you have to things are worse So keep to a Nissan filter unless you are sure the replacement is made for your car (not just the right tread to fit!) and use a 5w-30 fully synthetic oil (quality one) or if you are a cheapskate 10w-40 mineral and change it often (which makes this the most expensive option)
  6. The Amsoil TSO 0w-30 is the very best but whether you really need it is another matter. The ASL 5w-30 comes up tops in the USA tests , you pays your money you takes your choice. There is a club discount with Performance Oils too!

    Help

You shouldn't really need to top up the oil if everything is fine, But just repeating whats been said, you should top up with whats ment to be in it but have an oil and filter change high up your list of things to do, Sad to say thaty few dealers put top quality oil in customers cars simply for profit reasons. There are 3 top oils to use IMHO Amsoil Motul or Silkolene. All 3 can be bought from Opie oils and the Amsoil from Performance Oils, Just have a quick read on all 3 (or do searches ) choose which you want and see who does the best deal for it. If theres nothing between them buy the cheapest as all are far better than the minimum spec required; but do not short change on the filter. The best is Amsoils new type by far when they get to the UK Mobil 1 is excellent if you can find them or Nissans own to be safe. Run from the likes of Fram etc.
  8. As the Amsoil Importer I would definately go along with whats said above, 4500 - 5000 mls something like this would be where my money would be. A synthetic being so much better than a mineral oil would tend to prevent it running in. Once run in though the benifits are great for both the car and your pocket.
  9. What the dealer is saying is totally illegal! As long as the oil (or anything else for that matter) you use meets Nissan specification you are fully entitled to use it. If he really tries this on give the local teading standards a call, It will cost them a very large amount of money. All of the top end real synthetics are vastly superior to what a dealer would put in your car, not in their interest to have cars lasting problem free outside of warranty I'm afraid. A dealer told me yesterday that having different oil in my car invalidates my warranty ( ) so I think yours would be stuffed
  10. Everything above is correct but Amsoil gear oils are and have been stunning for 30 + years and is how I discovered the product in the first place. In the '80's I needed a gear oil to keep a standard Jaguar gearbox alive behind a 650BHP V12 for drag and track racing I was worried but after finding Amsoil at a show I found I needn't have been. The only damage the gearbox had in over 4 years of racing was a bent selector caused by my brute force and red mist. Years later on acquiring my Jaguar Le Mans car I was in the same situation with a similar amount of power going through a Hewland gearbox rated at 400BHP. Asking around I found that the trick was once again Amsoil as it was being used by much of the Can Am car owners to keep the regulated standard boxes together with V8 Chevy engines pumping out upto 1000BHP. I found the very same dealer again and got some Amsoil gear oil. Never had a problem in this department and later found out that Group 44 who ran the car in the States (where it won the Miami GP) used Amsoil in it in those days! Amsoil has also gone to F! teams who should remain nameless, but as 1 of the teams has been sold I am sure Eddie wouldn't mind. Basically I am trying to explain that Amsoil gear oils are a tried and tested product. As is explained above GL4 for the 'box and GL5 for the diff. In Amsoil terms this is:- MTG 75w-90 GL4 for the gearbox SVG 75w-90 GL5 for the diff. http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/gear_oils.html or of course buy it from Opie Oils To give you an idea of the quality SVG is good for upto 500,000 miles in lorry differentials! so the 360Z should be mighty fine with it. As for value for money Amsoil MTG is cheaper than Motul 300 and the SVG is more expensive but.... and I stand to be corrected here, the Motul 300 is not a LSD diff oil as Motul do a dedicated LSD diff oil. It could be used with the addition of additives which would add to the cost and aggravation in putting it in and no doubt making the Amsoil SVG cheaper and easier to use. As for Redline for whom Performance Oils used to be dealers..... I have just a little bit left for customers who really insist on it; we will not be ordering more. To quote their ex top salesman the gearbox oils 'have issues' I have a 5L pot of Redline that has been standing for a considerable time and it has creamy deposits settled out at the bottom to a height of a couple of inches which more than tends to support whats been said! Might add a pic if anyone is really interested but just best stick to Amsoil or Motul! Enough said.
  11. As the man says all 3 will easily exceed Nissans recomendations, I do rate Motul. But do you pay an extra 25% or so above the Amsoil price for Motul when testing in the States shows Amsoil to outperform? A further consideration is that the 350Z requires 4.7L and Motul comes in 2 L cansso you will have to get 6 L. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with Motul there is not but just consider the Amsoil which Opie Oils also stock. Its also available from Performance Oils at a club discount here:- http://www.performanceoilsltd.co.uk/pet ... e_oil.html Its a topsy turvy world and rarely does the very best come cheapest but in the UK at this time Amsoil may well be the cheapest real synthetic.
  12. I stand to corrected here but Ultron is a 5w-40 ? My book says the 350Z should have 5w-30, with 3 additional choices all being 30 weights. I am no expert in Exxon Mobil products but I believe you have either Ultron 5w-40 which I believe is not manufactures recommendations or an Exxon 5w-30 which I think you will find is a semi synthetic oil exceeding manufactures recommendations. Either way its the same company as Mobil and is easily a good enough oil; however if a thicker oil than necessary is in the car it will incur whats called 'pumping losses' , the pump working a little harder than necessary, which will reduce power/MPG a small amount and as a by product of the pump working harder produce more heat so the temperatures will be up a little. Whether you will notice either is another matter.
  13. Not Correct. All Amsoil synthetic oils are full synthetics in the UK and are made from a blend of PAO and esters of various forms to maximise the qualities desired & produce a product superior to either PAO or Ester / Diester. I have never seen an independant test (or any other kind of test for that matter ) where Motul is shown to be superior to Amsoil; nor have I ever seen a test where Silkolene is shown to be superior to Motul, but i stand to be corrected here. Please do search the web yourselves to verify this. The offical statement from Amsoil is here:- https://www.amsoil.com/faqs/faq8.aspx Regards Don

    Amsoil

Motul is an excellent oil and IMHO comes next in line behind Amsoil. Amsoil was the first company to produce API certified oil and has the trade mark 'The First In Synthetics' as a result. Being a family owned business it has never 'sold out' to get a huge sales increase, nor has it cheapened its product to increase its profit margin; it also continually developes it products being a chanpion of extended oil service intervals. (One of there gear oil is advertised as being good for 1/2 million miles!). Searches on the web will quickly show independant test comparisons between Amsoil and other brands. Amsoil is top on every one of the 10 Internationally recognised tests for every one of their products with just 1 exception (1 Amsoil grade comes second in 1 of the 10 tests at the moment but this may change soon as they continually improve their product) Amsoil publish these results, have them on their products and packaging. If they were false they would be sued by the Multi Nationals. Such is life in America. Amsoil were concerned about the new range of oil Motul produced, which IMHO is flattery indeed, The products have now been tested and Amsoil are no longer worried. Yes we can supply Oil Analysis test kits but do this at cost, really, and only to our customers. They are £15 with postage or less if added to an order.
  17. Hi all. I'm Don and am the Amsoil UK importers. In the past we supplied one of the best kept secrets and the best oil in the world to the trade. We were invited to offer our goods to club VR4 as we had the only suitable oil for their triptronic boxes. I have now been asked to offer club 350 Z members our products at a discount which we are happy to do. No I don't have a 350Z but do have an interesting Nissan project called an R390. Pleasure to be here.
