  1. Hi Chris, just picked up on your posts and I feel your pain with the car tax. I'm in Northern ireland and, a couple of cars ago, bought a Cougar from a bloke living in the North who was moving to Donegal and, though he loved the car, just couldn't justify the expense of the the Irish tax rate. I love that mustard colour and looked at a similar one myself a few years ago. The only initial problem I had with the 2004 GT I have now was the Bose sound system as it had the common fault with CD's skipping and for which Nissan replaced the head units under warranty but mine hadn't had the fix. Who uses CD's now but, as I wanted a touch screen and voice recognition, I swappped out the head unit anyway. Had a few problems initially with the sound quality (due to the onboard Bose amp needing high pre-amp output voltages) but got it sorted and haven't looked back. Good luck with your Zed and a belated welcome to the forum!
  2. Hi, Just replaced the gas struts on my 350Z and noticed one of the tailgate springs was badly bent and removing it I snapped the plastic bit so need a replacement. Zmanalex is out of stock and don't want to spend upwards of £50.00 on a new original. Anyone happen to have one or could maybe even point me in the right direction? I don't necessarily need the rubber cover so even the spring and plastic mount would do. I'm in Northern Ireland so it would have to be a postage job. Thanks.
  3. Hi, coming late to this thread but, as I recently swapped out the original Bose head unit in my Z for a double DIN Kenwood touch-screen, thought this might help. As the new unit obviously has a full screen, I fitted a reversing camera at the same time which I reckon was well worth the moderate extra cost. I initially had issues with the sound levels not being loud enough because the pre-amp voltages from the unit aren't high enough to drive the on-board Bose amp. but, after getting advice from other members here and my installer, went for a pair of line drivers which more than adequately fixed the problem though space behind the head unit is now rather lmited! Apparently the volume issue is more common with Kenwood/JVC units than Pioneer or Alpine but no guarantees either way of course. I went for a Kenwood DDX5016DAB which wasn't too pricey and has a few useful features, like the ability to pair two phones simultaneously. I tweaked the background image and colour settings to make it blend in nicely (see pics - not great quality as taken at night but, if you'd like something a bit clearer, let me know). Overall very chuffed with the final result and, with a 128 gig usb in the cubby, I have my entire music collection to pick from. Also swapped out the original interior lights for ice blue LEDs which I reckon look good with the azure blue finish.
  4. Need an ambient air temperature sensor if anyone has one going.
  5. Hi ZMANALEX, Thanks for getting back to me, I've removed the sensor and tried spraying it with switch cleaner but no joy - it's telling me it's 26 dgrees out there - In Northern Ireland in November, I wish! What price for a sensor posted to NI? Cheers Zigi1
  6. Hi, I've Just realised the ambient (outside) air temperature reading is way too high on my Z, I normally have the display set to MPH but, with the colder weather kicking in, thought I'd cycle through the options to check the outside temp and found the reading is 23 to 24 degrees C which is way off (I reckon about 15 to 20 higher than it should be) so presumably I won't get the "ICY" warning when the outside temp really drops which would be a nuisance. Does anyone know if this is a common problem with the Z or have I just got a dodgy sensor. I believe the sensor's located in front of the rad, is that right? Any suggestions for a fix would be much appreciated. Thanks y'all.
  7. Thanks for that Z Legend, (good to chat with another "Norn Iron" member). I did find an old thread where someone may have got round this by wiring the source control cable from the head unit to the answer call button but not sure how that would work and the thread's been archived. It'll be a couple of weeks before the unit gets fitted so maybe someone out there can shed some light on that in the meantime. If not, I suppose I'll just have to do without the feature - seems a shame though! Cheers Zigi1
  8. Hi everyone, Just got myself a Z GT last week and wish I'd done it years sooner! Only niggle is the Bose head unit - way out of date now and the usual skippy CD player. Decided to replace this with a Pioneer unit and have been to Halford's to get this priced as there aren't many independent fitters in my neck of the woods and I don't have the know-how to fit myself. Happy with the Halfords price but, while there's no problem with the steering wheel controls for the audio, they reckon the Bluetooth "answer phone" button is a complete no-no with any after-market head unit. (To be fair they're perfectly happy to be persuaded otherwise if there's a workaround.) Does anyone know if they're right about this or is there a fix as I'd really like to keep this feature available on the steering wheel if possible. Thanks Zigi1
  9. Hi all, I'm in much the same position as Shifty. I'm about to use Halfords to replace the original Bose head unit in my Z GT with a Pioneer unit. The techie I'm dealing with reckons there's no problem hooking up the steering wheel controls for the volume and "next track" etc. but reckons the phone answer button is a no-no. Does anyone know if that's correct or is there a workaround for this as I'd really like to keep the steering wheel button operational. Thanks in advance for any info. Zigi1
  10. Sorry folks, forgot to ask there, does anyone know if the steering wheel phone answer button works with these adaptors or is this feature only possible with the Bose? Cheers Zigi1
  11. Thanks for the advice Z Fanatic, and for that link to the adaptor kits which is a real find! Looks like about £350/£400 to get a basic unit and adaptors plus fitting so will consider that when deciding whether to go for this one as there's another available with a Kenwood unit already fitted - guess I'm sold on the 350z though, was going to go for a 3.2 V6 TT just to get the rear seats but, what the heck, my wife can have the passenger seat and our son can hang onto the roof! Thanks again Zigi1
  12. Hi everyone, First of all, let me 'fess up - I don't (yet) own a 350Z although I'm considering buying one (yep - mid-life crisis I'm afraid) and have just registered with the site so please bear with me if I don't get the protocols right and seem lacking in knowledge! The car I'm considering is a 2004 GT and I have a question regarding the Bose system. First off, the phone adaptor is missing which I gather from a bit of research isn't uncommon. Also, the unit has the problem of skipping when playing CDs which I also gather was a problem with the original units which Nissan sorted under the warranty so I assume the original owner didn't get this done. My question is: What sort of price would I be looking at to replace the head unit with something a bit more up to date, i.e. get rid of the cassette player (even though I'm old enough to still have loads of cassettes lying around) and add a touch screen? I assume if I did this the lack of an adaptor would become irrelevant - is that right? Also, I'd need to retain Bluetooth and would still want the steering wheel controls to work (I get the impression that it's impossible to get the phone answer button to work with retro-fits - am I right on that?) Don't have the technical expertise I'm afraid to do the work myself so would have to get this done professionally. Can anyone provide a guesstimate on the likely costs and feasibility? Any information and advice will be gratefully accepted. Cheers Zigi1
