  2. When I use ramps I tie luggage straps to the front of them, lay them out flat and drive over the straps. As you drive up the ramp the rear/front wheels (depending on which end you're getting up in the air) are over the straps and stop the ramps sliding.
  3. I use a Saris Bones rack for my bike. It seems to be pretty secure - I took the bike from London to Manchester without any problems.
  4. I was out driving last weekend and had a bit of a mishap when driving onto a grass verge which turned out to me concrete (oops). I bought the Z 2nd hand and it has always pulled very slightly to one side, and after the above I reckon it could do with its alignment looking at... can anyone recommend somewhere good in the Epsom/Surrey area? There's also a hefty scuff mark to the alloy and I was thinking of getting one of those mobile vans out to refurbish it. I've heard that the paint they use can discolour over time - anyone had experience of them? Cheers!
  5. Here's my tuppence: 350z would be a great car but unfortunately I lack the cash (and the driving ability) to do this on my own. I could potentially get a couple of petrolhead mates to join in though. Could you have a set up for teams of drivers? E.g: - 3 seperate races per day, different driver in each - pit stops with compulsory driver changes That way we could spread the cost. P.S. I did one of your track days at Bedford recently - a fantastic day and great atmosphere!
  6. Ok round 2 done. Yeah I tried that on Sunday too but didn't have any luck. The pads fit lovely and snug in without the metal shims, as soon as the metal shims come into it there doesn't seem to be a hope in hell of getting them in the calliper! I take it the shims are essential? I thought I'd try the other rear calliper, and exactly the same thing - pads in fine without the shims, not with the shims. Just to check is this the right order: Inside of car full shim half shim (straight cut) pad ROTOR pad half shim (angled cut) full shim outside of car I'm going to have one more go tomorrow before I succumb to my ineptitude and take it to a garage!
  7. I was working on the car today and a couple of young kids cycled past: Them: "Is that your car" Me: "Yep" Them: "Is it a lamborghini?" Me: "Er... no" (then with me quite liking the lime light) "this is waaaaay faster than a lamborghini" Kid to other kid: "told you so" Made my day it did!
  8. Well, I had a break for an hour or two and got started. I got a better hydraulic jack with a greater lift, no problems with axle stands now. Started with the rear and changed brake lines, no probs. After taking the offside rear calliper off I found that one of the pins is missing the wire/staple holding it in place! Can't believe it hadn't fallen out. New pads went in but for the life of me I can't get the calliper back on the rotor (I'm convinced the piston is pushed all the way in), it just won't go on. I would have tried for longer but then I sat on a (open) tube of copper grease and thought I'd take your advice and call it a day. One beer down plenty more to follow...
  9. So I've got nice new brake lines and pads to go on this weekend, not bad weather to be doing it I thought - get a nice tan. This is my day so far: Pop out this morning to get a few bits and bobs from Halfrauds - a set of sockets and a torque wrench. Get back, loosen wheel nuts and Jack up one corner with the scissor jack, find that the axle stand is to tall to fit under. Lower the car, tighten the wheel nuts and drive back to Halfrauds. Treat myself to a hydraulic jack to make life easier. Get back, loosen wheel nuts, double check on interweb where jacking points are, jack car up, find that hydraulic jack doesn't lift high enough for axle stands (axle stands are also from Halfrauds). Drive to Wickes to buy block of wood to rest jack on, get back, don't fancy resting wheeled trolley jack on wood. Loosen wheel nuts, rest scissor jack on wood, raise car. Open brand new 1/2" drive sockets, discover they refuse to fit my 1/2" drive wrench. Weird, wonder if they fit the brand new torque wrench. Open brand new torque wrench, see it's covered in scratches, scuffs and the 'warranty void if removed' sticker has been partially scratched off. Notice sticker attached to wrench that says; "The Crown Court, Exhibit No. 3, See officer of the Court Form 5123". Realise the wrench is not new and has potentially been used in a crime. Test wrench with sockets, sockets still don't fit. I'm about to lower car, tighten wheel nuts and return to Halfrauds to return the jack, sockets and wrench and to generally put the fear of god into them. /RANT Oh and I would appreciate some advice, surely jacking the car up to put it on axle stands shouldn't be this difficult? How does everyone else do it? EDIT: This is meant to be in the 350z General Forum - not even posting is going right this morning!!!
  10. Thanks for that! I've been wondering what meant but have worked it out now. Damn right it is!
  11. I did my first track day yesterday and have well and truly got the bug! It was a novice day with club MSV at Bedford Autodrome - absolutely fantastic and good to put the z through its paces. I'm slightly lacking skills as a driver though; I span off a fair distance so was very glad I wasn't at Brands or Castle Combe which I've heard aren't as forgiving... I also had a brown pants moment when the brake pedal went to the floor without any response. With that in mind I need to change the fluid and pads (I'd like to keep the callipers and discs as standard for now), does anyone have any recommendations of what to get and where to get from? I'm also thinking of changing to braided lines, again any recommendations? FYI I don't really go in for fast road driving (sitting in a queue on the commute to work is exciting as it gets for me) and plan on doing 4 to 5 trackdays a year. A pal has said Ferodo pads are good put I'm unsure to trust something named after a hobbit?
  12. Thanks for the advice! I'll go for the ramps then, although for some reason I never feel quite as safe under them than axle stands - weird? Good point about the engine being aluminium - I'd already bought one though! Still, at least I can can say the z is modded now *cough*
  13. Hello all, Relatively new to 350z ownership - I picked up a 57 plate about 9 months ago. Loving everything about it except it's ability to chomp through the super stuff. It's due a service and from the schedule it looks like only an air filter and oil change with an inspection. Not keen on paying a fortune at dealers so was planning on doing it myself. Have a couple of questions... When putting the car on axle stands can I place the stand just inside the lip on the jacking point? The scissor jack has a groove to fit the lip but I don't fancy putting the stands directly below the lip. I was on e-bay looking for sump plug washers and found this, a magnetic sump plug; http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Japspeed-Nissan-Fairlday-Z-Z32-300ZX-Magnetic-Sump-Plug-/140599424490?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20bc60f5ea. I'm sceptical whether it will make a blind bit of difference to engine wear. What do you think?
