Right, it's the Agreed Value on such a new and modified vehicle that was the issue. Normally AV is reserved for collector's cars. The Glass's guide thing came into the mix when we were talking about GAP cover but this would not apply to a modded car anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

Our standard cover does provide like for like replacement of mods as a result of accident damage but not in the event of a write-off.

Hi, I'm afraid we won't be able to quote you on 185bhp over stock, as I say our limit is 100 over.

I called earlier today to see about a quote, and was told that "we don't cover modified cars".

I don't know who you spoke to but that's simply not true. We work with around 200 car clubs/forums and modified cars are a regular feature of the business we write. Perhaps your modification results in an increase in bhp of more than 100 over stock? That's a limit we have but to say we don't cover modified vehicles at all is absolutely incorrect.

Chris Knott - better prices than most?

According to a recent survey by the AA, motor insurance premiums fell by 1% during Q1 of 2015 - the average UK comprehensive motor insurance premium being £530.47 with the direct brokers and price comparison sites.

Phone Quotes v Comparison Sites

I often hear members say things like "Yeah, but you won't be able to compete with the price comparison sites will you? - I mean they're just so cheap". And my response is this...

Actually we're just as likely to beat an online price as any other. It's not a case that you should only go online when searching for quotes, just as it isn't necessarily going to work best for you if you only get phone quotes. The key is to try both - they're different offerings and either could come up with the winning quote for you as an individual.

Different deals exist for brokers that mean we can easily compete in the market, especially if there's a specialism like Chris Knott's for car club members (modified or standard).

Yes price is very important and we know that's normally the buying trigger but cheapest isn't always also the best. When you look at some of the companies listed on the comparison sites finding a contact phone number is difficult and there's no physical address available or they're based abroad - are you sure you're going to be able to get the advice and assistance you need when the time comes? Or are they keeping you at arm's length for a reason?

Will you get personal service and trusted advice from qualified insurance experts or just a call centre team with a script? Will you get the ongoing support you need as their client if you need to change anything or make a claim? How do their charges compare for adding mods, changing cars or an address, replacing a lost Certificate? There are alot of things you need to consider (without any help) when picking your insurer.

As a broker we have access to a panel of insurers who are specifically seeking car club/forum members because of your love for your cars and they'll quote accordingly. We'll advise you on which is most suitable for your needs and we also offer all the positive things mentioned above.

It may be then that by avoiding Chris Knott you're missing out on a better deal. Our price may be similar or better AND you'll get the service benefits by default - surely the extra value added would win in that situation?

I guess what I'm saying is don't just dismiss brokers and phone quotes. Give us a try in the mix. We could just as easily be the best option for your individual set of circumstances. Like we were for the clients quoted below if you want to see testimonials...

The zed is still a 3.5ltr lump compared to the 2000's 2 so even though the bhp might have been similar that's still too much of a difference for the insurers on our panel I'm afraid.

We do need members to have 12 months experience of the car or one of similar power to get access to the special club scheme. Without it you're just left with the same rates that are available to most brokers I'm afraid.

"Having just renewed my insurance there are some things that I feel I should share. My Civic was bought to replace my Fiat Bravo M-Jet Sport, this had been flattened while parked in my council rented garage during the storm of Christmas Eve morning 2013. A claim was made on my insurance, Sainsburys Bank underwritten by eSure... Now this year, up went the premium to £560. This before I told them about the SP30 picked up in August (lovely car the Civic and quick). I then phoned Chris Knott and got quoted £520 for a policy with the same excess etc and including the SP30. I then went hunting on the web, finally ending with a quote from Aviva for £342, although I had to settle for excess of £350 and not original £250. I phoned Chris Knott back to say that I would be going with Aviva, but they asked if they could requote to the higher excess. This resulted in a final quote of £325 - quite a saving on my original renewal figure. A little bit of time resulting in a saving of £235. Lesson learned for another time. In which case I think he'd have to try doing it offline, so he can explain what happened. At least when talking to someone in person or on the phone he can explain that it wasn't an accident but something merely slipped and damaged the inside door of a van.

Sorry for the advert but that's an example of where a broker should come into their own. I think people presume it costs extra to use a broker so they don't bother, they just go direct.

You're not going to like the answer but here goes. You should disclose this as an accidental damage claim to your personal insurer but let them know it was on a company vehicle. It will come down to your personal insurer's attitude to the claim as to whether it'll affect your private car insurance premium.

With some of the insurers we use we would expect to be successful in arguing that this claim is irrelevant in terms of rating for your private car, so it wouldn't affect your premium.

I can't comment on what will happen with your specific insurer but you'd have more of a chance of success if you had a broker/intermediary between you and the insurer.
