I bought my girlfriend a Mark 1 MX-5 last year.

 

The smile factor is as high as the Z and at £1500 for a perfectly decent one, they are a steal. Also, the modding you can do to them is never-ending.

 

The trade-in doesn't surprise me to be honest.

Didn't trade my Zed in for a 5. I had no car for a bit and bought the 5 later because it was cheap and fun. It was no Zed but it was much lighter on its feet and the steering was better. They don't break but they do rust....

I just bought my Z and couldn't bare to sell the MX5 - so I now have both. They're totally different cars, both with different good/bad points. I can see why someone would have a hard job choosing between them.

 

However, not set foot in the MX5 since buying the 350!

I had an mx5 a few years ago. They are excellent cars with brilliant handling. Unfortunatley they really are very slow as standard. People say it does not matter but to me it did...
