Winged Rodent Posted September 21, 2006 Share Posted September 21, 2006 The '8 speed' box in the Skyline is, IIRC, a CVT where the electronics mimic a 'stepped' 8 gear transmission as one of the modes the driver can select. Lexus, however, do now offer a 'proper' 8-speed torque converter auto gearbox in the latest LS. Apparently, and unoffficially, Lexus engineers will admit that the car doesn't actually need 8 speeds, but as Mercedes gearboxes 'only' have 7-speeds......
