Gutted stock cats to decat pipe

Has anyone ran their stock cats gutted and then moved onto decats like cobra or berks? Was there much difference in tone/raspiness or volume? Mine does little tiny pops with stock, do you get more with proper decats?  Looking at some decats but not worth it if it's gonna sound the same.

If so, was it easy to do and how much better is the sound?
