When I cleaned mine it was the former option. Mind you it was spotless after about 70k of motoring and didn't notice any change, however cleaning the throttle control valve did make a difference.

Sensor out and use electrical component spray. Give it 2-3 blasts straight unto the resistor wire let it dry for about. 5mins the repeat. Let it dry for 20mins and refit.

Good idea to clean the TB butterfly too and probably the plenum of PCV blow by oil. I use a small paint brush and white spirit to do this.

Do a full relearning procedures and job done. The car always drives crisply and responsively after this. I do it one a year.

I did the TB a few months back before I had the Uprev done, just never thought of doing the MAF.

 

I suppose the MAF mainly gets dirty if your running oiled filters etc? My TB was stinking though!
