  1. Sounds obvious and you probably have already, but have you tightened it by hand using a sufficient amount of force, until the gaitor starts to twirl and it won't move any more?

     

    Yep... if I fully tighten it, and it will tighten nicely, then the markings don't line up... essentially, I cannot get combination of washers that allows it to tighten nicely with the markings lined up.

     

    I had the same, so when fully tightened (trying a variety of number of washers and position of lettering when commencing installation) and everytime it was fully tight, the lettering pointed south-east (4-5 o'clock), this happens to be pointing directly at the driver, so I thought it was a nice twist (boom-boom) and as it was late when I was fitting, I've kept it in that position!

  2. Some find that it passes okay, others haven't; it seems to depend on whether they've been warmed up prior to testing.

     

    The previous owner had the mot'd just before I bought and he initially took it to an mot station that didn't follow his advice to test after the cats they'd been warmed up, but the tester didn't and it didn't pass.

     

    Jim then took the car to another mot station and after warming up the HFCs, it passed easily!

  3. Fit me in at short notice, they're half-way between Poole & Bedford, so it worked great to get some servicing done on my way back home after a day at Bedford Autodrome.

     

    I wanted to change the fluids that weren't evident of being changed (coolant, steering, clutch), gearbox oil as last done 4 years previously and to lubricate the driveshafts. After Bedford, the car developed brake judder, so new front brakes were also on the menu. Car was inspected on the ramp and there was a small amount of play in the rear droplinks, so I opted to replace these to.

     

    I went for EBC grooved discs & Ferodo DS2500s that were in stock, plus the droplinks & fluids; so I was fortunate they had everything I needed.

     

    The waiting room was a bit cold & bleak, although the heaters were turned on. When I asked what others were doing for lunch, I received a blank response from Rich and told that everyone had brought their own. There was no offer of a lift or a suggestion of where to get some food. Rich did make me two coffees and luckily I had some snacks left over from Bedford.

     

    After getting everything done, the last job was bleeding the clutch after draining the old fluid and installing a braided clutch line. Unfortunately, it transpired that the slave cylinder had given up. Despite both mechanics and then Jez as well, spending over an hour trying to bleed the clutch, it wasn't bleeding properly.

     

    It appeared that it may have worked, so the plan was to drive home; they should've all finished for the day well before then, so I appreciated they'd stayed back to try to get it sorted.

     

    Unfortunately, the clutch pedal stopped working a few minutes down the road on a roundabout and I then had a scarey journey home with an intermittently working clutch. The next day, Jez apologised for letting the car go when it wasn't fully sorted and gave me some options re slave cylinder / clutch replacement.

     

    Other than the clutch, the work was done to a high standard and the car was much improved: brake judder and driveshaft click cured, handling more planted, brakes firmer and piece of mind that all the fluids had been changed.

     

    If I hadn't had an awful journey home due to the clutch, I think I'd have overlooked the sub-par hospitality, esp as they'd booked me in at short notice, had everything I needed on site, did a great job mechanically otherwise and had stayed late to try and bleed the clutch successfully.

  4. 9bhp added on mine! From 309bhp (HR) to 318bhp (almost 3%) on H-Dev dyno with Uprev.

     

    Car already had HKS filters, Motordyne silenced Y pipe and Cobra resonated.

When changing the clutch fluid soon after buying my Z (which had never been done and isn't on the standard service schedule despite it being brake fluid!), the guys at H-Dev were unable to bleed it (after much effort and time) and it became apparent that the slave cyclinder had given up.

     

    As my Z is an HR, changing the slave cyclinder is a gearbox out job, so as it's a big job and as the clutch had done 40k, it made sense to do the clutch and therfore the flywheel at the same time.

     

    So I needed a clutch kit fitting asap but due to work commitments I couldn't get a day off that week.

     

    Bob & Chris were magnificent in agreeing to fit the clutch kit on Good Friday!

     

    The experience of visiting the Z Shed was a very positive one; it's relaxed with lots of 'banter', one can have a look and take pictures along the way and even help out (to a very limited extent for me due to lack of skills!), plus lots of cups of tea/coffee and lunch.

  6. The handbook states longer service interval for iridiums.

     

    As above, if you're not leaving it standing around then they'd be the ones to go for.

     

    I've put Denso Iridiums in mine and found the idle was a bit smoother, but like replacing any item this could just be because the previous ones were due replacement.

     

    Denso were the oem spec ones iirc but ngk are a popular choice too.

     

    www.sparkplugs.co.uk are good value but you might be able to get the same from one of the traders on here.

  7. Louder, raspier, a bit more bhp when remapped.

     

    Loved mine, although the initial rev when turning the ignition on sometimes felt a bit antisocial! People will look at you, so if you like cloak and dagger I'd stay away but if you like an amazing roaring rasp, then it's for you!

     

    Only removed mine so I could take the car on track (my hearing has recalibrated now and love the sound with the stock cats now too!)

  8. Z Shed fitted this kit for me in March, it's brilliant! They commented on the quality of the kit and it comes with everything required (just need to get clutch fluid, of course, and braided clutch line)

     

    The clutch action is much smoother and precise. It revs more feely and heel n toe is more natural as a result.

     

    There is a mild chatter at idle and under 2k rpm, but it's perfectly tolerable and a very small price to pay for the benefits above, and good value when you consider everything that's included.

    Ewen was easy to talk to on the phone and via email, was very helpful when discussing the kit and I'm very happy with the kit now fitted.

  10. The team at Abbey were amazing!

     

    I was at Brands Hatch for a track day on 3rd May and my car was running above drive by noise limits; I was given a chance to put the exhaust right before trying again.

     

    I called Chris and luck would have it, they had a good pair of stock cats for an HR and were very kind to fit these for me on the day so I could get some track time in the afternoon.

     

    Gave me a lift to town for lunch and picked me up after, car was ready and waiting for me; amazing!

     

    Everyone there was friendly, communicated very well, knowledgeable, it was a relaxed environment and I felt very welcome; it's a family style business with excellent facilities.

     

    They were happy to have my cats, that I have at home, in return (as long as in good condition, of course) and happy to hold on to the Berks HFCs that came off until then.

  11. Cobra resonated on my 370ZN with berk cats. Was nicely balanced pre berk on its own but with the hi flow cats it's mental. Defo too loud for some but it sounds absolutely brutal, pops and bangs on up and downshifts etc. Drone is there at 70mph but that's the payoff.

     

    Mine's similar with a silenced Motordyne Y pipe as well as the Cobra res & Berks HFCs; sounds amazing and gets lots of approving comments.

     

    I trialled putting the stock cats back on; I missed the addictive raspy snarl and had to recalibrate my senses. I enjoyed the less in-your-face and more more subtle yet still pleasing sound for a couple of weeks but I missed the excitement and captivating sounds of the HFC as well as the slight but noticeable extra power / torque / throttle response that the Berks free up - so they're back on now!

    Previous owner (Jim) had these fitted less than 5k miles ago.

     

    They produce an exhilarating rasp and released some horses, Jim had it mapped after putting these on (from 309 to 318bhp).

     

    My exhaust system was exceeding drive-by limits on track, so standard cats have gone back on (Big thank you to the Abbey Motorsport team!)

    They're at Abbey Motorsport currently. I live in Bournemouth; could sort something out collection wise.

  13. I love the sound my car makes and static it's well within most track day limits, however on my first lap at Bedford I received a 'NOISE' board, meaning I was very close to the drive by limit of 87.5 dB.

     

    I had to then essentially 'drive around' the microphones; I still had an amazing day but would prefer to be able to focus on my driving rather than being worried about being black flagged for noise (more than ten cars were black flagged on Monday, apparently the wind exacerbated their already strict limits, some cars were on their first lap, gutted for them).

     

    Mine has: Cobra Resonated Catback; Motordyne Y pipe; Berks HFC (and HKS drop in air filters - 350 HR).

     

    My options seem to be:

     

    1. Put the stock cats back on and have remapped (was remapped after fitting the Berks, releasing 9bhp, so guess will need redoing? As Uprev has been paid for, should just be the cost of remap labour)

     

    2. Add exhaust valve to reduce noise, only one I've found is this, would need to find a place to fit it and no guarantee of effectiveness etc: http://www.ebay.co.u...=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

     

    3. Bung / muffler etc options, another Z at Bedford had a pair of these, I believe they just slot in the exhaust tips (? clamped on somehow to keep them there?) - can obviously be removed, requires less outlay in terms of purchase and labour and I'll retain those extra 9bhp and raspy bark for when I'm not worried about noise microphones! http://www.ebay.co.u...=STRK:MEBIDX:IT

     

    4. Go to an exhaust specialist and have a silenced pipe made and fitted, not sure where I'd go for this and what section of exhaust would be replaced and other negative effects such as power loss / need for remap etc.

     

    Not sure any of these would be sufficient to ensure meeting the drive by limits; has anyone been in a similar situation and could offer any advice / not been in this situation but have more experience than me etc!

     

    If anyone can point me in the right direction for any of the above options (or other options that I've not mentioned / thought about, such as the Y pipe etc), that would be most welcome!

    A few things:

     

    1. Poor amount of information available on them; the Exedy clutch is advertised to fit up to 2004 (?) and the flywheel to 2007 - basically neither is a good option if you have an HR!

     

    2. They don't include all the extra bits; like bearings, bushings, lines etc that some of the forum traders do in their deals. Let alone uprated slave cylinders!

     

    3. Not supporting forum traders.

  15. I've got B6s on my car and would highly recommend them. Yes, the ride is a bit stiffer but no less compliant than stock. The car feels more composed and controllable and it actually handles potholes better. When I first got them I found myself tensing up as I approached a particularly bad stretch of road but was amazed how well the suspension dealt with it. It practically glides over some of the rough stuff. I agree it can sometimes be a bit unsettled at low speeds on bad surfaces but is perfectly acceptable and improves with road speed. Go and buy some... you won't regret it.

     

    Was very tempted but I've just spent a grand changing fluids, drop links, brakes and found out my clutch slave cylinder is buggered so having an HR means that's a gearbox out job. One of the reasons I bought the Z was the compliant ride and after the grand recently spent, she's handling a lot tighter. Any suspension upgrades are on hold whilst I get the clutch sorted.

     

    These look in good condition & low mileage.
