I was thinking of something along these lines:
-
Looks great but I would get some guard bars on the sub pronto before you do a shop in it and a tin of beans goes through it
Yeah definitely gonna hunt for a decent guard! I don't really let anyone put anything in my car anyway
-
Lol welcome back Patch!
No worries, I used your thread as a guide that it was at least possible, and it does sound so much better! I'm glad your absence made me decide to just go for it
-
I'm now selling this incase anyone just wants an aftermarket behind-seat subwoofer. I have no use for it anymore, and can't exactly sell it with the car lol.
Anyone want it for £20? Completely ready to install and screw in a sub.

Installed and tested!! The bass is very tight and clean and does drop low; there's zero rattle that I can hear when it drops hard (and that's without using any Dynamat).
This box is 100% better than installing an aftermarket sub in the OEM bose location - no doubt whatsoever.
I messed up the box a bit, as it sticks out by just under an inch on the left hand side of the above photo. But not enough for me to care. I'm not great at woodworking, but has done the job well for me.
I now have my bootspace back, and my amps are all hidden and neatly installed! I put my spare tyre back in, as that holds the boot floor up very well - easier than building a new floor for now.
Job done.

Lol yeah could always be worse! Hoping tomorrow is a decent day, althought it doesn't help waking up at 12 when sunset it around 4! lol
-
Slowly but surely! The rain is really messing with my timeframe lol
-
The rain has held me out for a few days, so I couldn't carry on with the build. Still haven't received the carpet, so couldn't finish the box, but I've done the amp rack and fitted it behind the seat!
Although, in all my playing around, I've managed to generate a power leak in the car, it's killed off a brand new battery overnight. So need to find the leak now! Fun times
I also had to hot glue the edges of the box, as the sawdust mix left some small gaps. It looked airtight, but I thought I may aswel be doubly sure, wouldn't want to rip the carpet off if i find a leak later on.

Finally got my bootspace back!!!

I had two 15s in my old car and love the sound of 15s I'm currently trying to find a way of squeezing one or even two into the boot without loosing all the usable room in there lol
You could fit a 15, but you'd have to lose the spare tyre, boot floor, and get a custom box built. Either for the floorpan, or under the strut bar. Will be very difficult without losing some space. Under strut is best, or build a false floor with the sub underneath
-
The amps at the moment are sitting under the boot floor, where the spare wheel used to be. Either I'll build a new floor above them, that lifts on a hinge off the bottom edge of the sub box, or i'll move the amps to the empty space behind the driver seat (in the cabin where the OEM sub used to be)

Lol, googled some photos of leather wrapped boxes and they don't look as good as I'd imagined! Ordered some acoustic carpet instead, hopefully should arrive Tuesday!

Nah im thinking more the textured leather that high end cars get? Can't remember what the name for it is
-
Cool. Can't wait to see what it look's like all fitted in place.
Definitely think you should try to cover it though in acoustic cloth rather than paint it.
Yeah i test painted part of the MDF, and it looks crap. You're right
-
Leather!! Very good shout!! Definitely gonna go leather
-
Finally finished the box! Added the photos to my other install thread
-
I did a similar thing but i put a bigger sub in and I did a thread on it if it helps dude. Like the nexus install.
Yeah I used your thread among many Cheers! My version didn't sound too good, hence the under-strut box being built, hopefully should be a good amount better!

Box done!!!
Can't start a new day without cleaning up the mess, and arranging my tools
Finally found my beloved G-clamp, made life a lot easier today!
Sub fit perfectly! Was pretty pleased at this point
Went a bit crazy with the glue and sawdust/glue mix - but I'd rather do this properly once, did not want an air leak! Will clean up with the dremel and a sanding block tomorrow!
As I said, went a bit crazy with the glue and sawdust mix.

Yeah the cubby was just the easiest thing that worked pretty well at the time of the install. I was hoping to get some form of plastic to make a decent facia so it looks completely OEM. Didn't actually think of fibreglass! Good shout.
I'm not sure whether I should keep the lid and let the tablet be hidden when not in use, or keep it in view. I guess once I get tints, I'll get the facia to keep the tablet always in view!
-
Nice, will give it a shot!

Given that the aftermarket sub in the OEM bose location sounded rubbish, I started building an under-strut box (all credit goes to Patch for his attempt at this first!)
Got the templating done, and the box sized up and built. Just need to unscrew it all, add glue, then screw back and completely seal up. The box at the moment is held on with minimal screws so I could keep test fitting to the car. Fits very snugly!
I don't plan on carpeting it, gonna try matte black spraypaint first, and if it really looks crap then I'll carpet it.
Templating:
Template done.
Bought a coupla workbenches from Maplin for £10 each! Definitely needed these!
Most parts for the box fit on one 18 x 606 x 1220mm MDF board (Wickes). Two of these boards or equivalent will be needed for a full box. I bought 4 because I overestimated the amount I'd need, but also because I wanted to make a new MDF floor for the boot. I trashed my existing boot floor when installing the amps.
So tomorrow I'll test fit this again to the car, just to see if I need to shave any edges off. Then I'll cut the hole for the sub, and finalise the entire box!
Quite pleased with the nearly finished result though.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll be able to update with how much better this sounds compared to using the OEM bose subwoofer location.

Once i've glued and screwed the box, I know I'm going to have a few tiny air gaps where the panels just aren't sitting flat against each other (blame the jigsaw!). I plan to sweep up all the sawdust I've left in the shed, and mix into paste with PVA (without watering down much) and use this to fill and smooth all gaps.
I know this to be quite decent when woodworking, but never tried with an audio install...any thoughts as to whether this should suffice, or whether there'd be anything better to use?
I was put off using silicone sealer again, as the last install i did using silicone stank the car out for days

Yeah best entry for wires is through the right hand side (when ur looking at the strut from the boot hatch), as I've got a fair bit of space there. Will probably use a binding post or a distributor block.
If I'm lazy I may just thread the wires through a hole and glue it back up.
binding post: would be nice to use one of these. will probably thread the wires through a hole for now, and order one of these from ebay.

Lol, nearly done!!

Didn't use the glue gun idea as I couldn't find my heatgun, and it would have gotten very messy! Screws without glue did the job well for now. But chamfering the edges was ridiculously difficult with a jigsaw. Was too lazy to dig the table saw out from under a pile of toolboxes!
Quite pleased with the nearly finished result though..

Yeah was planning on cardboard templating and then doing the woodwork. Hot glue gun is a brilliant idea - never would have thought of that! Will add that to my shopping list for tomorrow!
Cheers GMballistic!
Yeah I really like 350z-uk, most other forums I've peeked at seem to attack newbies with questions lol
Will post progress tomorrow!
350z Android tablet + aftermarket sub install!

I like the idea of a triangle security head! Will see what I can source. The setup is getting better by the day as the subwoofer is wearing in! For anyone debating this install, definitely do it!! Pretty happy that I actually took the time and effort to build the box myself rather than buying one
