  1. Yeah I used a different gauge this time just incase. I followed this

    Measurement of Compression Pressure

    1. Warm up engine.

    2. Turn ignition switch off.

    3. Release fuel pressure (See How to Change Fuel Filter)

    4. Remove all spark plugs.

    5. Disconnect distributor center cable.

    6. Attach a compression tester to No. 1 cylinder.

    7. Depress accelerator pedal fully to keep throttle valve wide open.

    8. Crank engine (let it turn over 7 times) and record highest gauge indication.

    9. Repeat the measurement on each cylinder as shown above.

    Note: Always use a fully charged battery to obtain specific engine revolution.

    Compression Pressure kPa (kg/cm2, psi) / RPM

    Standard = 1,236 (12.6, 179) / 300

    Minimum = 1,040 (10.6, 151) / 300

    Difference limit between cylinders = 98 (1.0, 14) / 300

    10. If cylinder compression in one or more cylinders is low, pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinders through the spark plug hole and re-test compression.

    * If adding oil helps compression, piston rings may be worn or damaged. If so, replace piston rings after checking piston.

    * If pressure stays low, a valve may be sticking or seating improperly. Inspect and repair valve and valve seat.

    * If compression in any two adjacent cylinders is low and if oil does not help compression, there is a leak past the gasket surface. If so, replace cylinder head gasket.

  2. So......a little update. Ordered some Titan pro race s 5w40 oil and a new set of plugs. When changing the plugs I noticed oil on the threads and a little on the tips 😱. So I did a compression test and all 6 cylinders were done to 120 psi 😱😱😱. I wasn't sure if I should leave all plugs In and do one at a time so that's how I did it. Does it sound like the rings have gone? If so how much is it for a rebuild and anyone know of a good garage in scotland that's reliable and not extortionate? It could be the case I'll need to trade her in 😭😭😭

  3. Oh dear! Is there anything I can do? I only recently did an oil change. Around 1-2k miles ago. I just checked my oil level and you're right it's halfway between the min and max level. I used Mobil 1 0-40 new life oil. Is that maybe why it's burning so quickly as I usually change the oil every 3-4 months or 3k miles. I know it should be 5w30 oil but which type as there is ford or fe oil and vw or esp oil?

  4. Yeah it's really bad. Mark at abbey said it could be that my car burns oil and because there's no cats there then it's coming straight out the exhaust!
