  1. The reason i remarked on the UK and fuel is due to it having widband lambda, and so should have no problems with lower grade petrol unlike the import which will be mapped for 100 RON.

I also agree with the comments about BP ultimate, i have noticed better fuel figures even with my Supra :)

So far from reading and comments i have gleaned that although the JDM model is in basic form less speced than the UK, however as with most Japanese import cars, they can come in almost any trim level that the UK can, and sometimes some nice things that the UKs don't.

  2. Just wondering other than the obvious suspension and ECU differences, are there any others to bare in mind when looking with a view to buying?

I presume the import will require 98-99 RON fuel and the UK can cope with 95 RON fine?

and i also presume the import will be more expensive to insure, average costs for insurance or a link would be helpful :)

  3. That's exactly why I wouldn't buy an ex demonstrator :scare:

Not sure i would agree with that, how many sales guys do you know that will sit there and say nothing while you cheerfully hang the ass end out around bends, and bounce it off the rev limiter?

Also my clutch feels nothing like the one described in that test drive, its not at all heavy - lots of people have had clutch probs so maybe it was on the way out? They'd have to shift that aerial on the 370 roadster before i could touch it with a barge pole, it looks terrible!

My comparison is to the Supra clutch, which is a much has a much more refined feel, and also tailored by me for position and comfort ;) don't forget that the Supra when new was nearly 50K when it first came out in 93-4 so buy todays standards it would be equivalent to 100K

  4. Don't know how old your daughter is, but at least there is a rear seat (just) in the 370Z, i don't have to worry as my daughter is grown up with a car of her own :)

If you can afford it i would go for the 370Z, i could not justify going for a new car as i just don't use it enough.

I was surprised that the GTR demo was 10K cheaper with 8K on the clock.

  5. My Supra replacement as i have already mentioned is likely to be a Nissan 350Z, so Wednesday i finally got a chance to try one at i relatively local Nissan dealer, took long enough to find one locally :surrender: unfortunately not a long or fast test drive due to the weather and the shear traffic density.

But the overall impression was very good, nice driving position, good steering feedback, felt pretty sure footed, although i would have liked to kane it some more, the engine feels pretty strong with good torque, very similar in characteristics to N/A or single turbo Supra off boost, but i would say definitely quicker (well it should be with more power/torque than an N/A) 220BHP

Brakes where very strong, and very quick to bite, unlike the Supra which is strong but very progressive, clutch was a bit long travel as heavier than an uprated Supra clutch, but I'm sure it can be adjusted, as I'm sure can the brakes, and surprisingly the gearbox feels very similar the the Supra, but the overall feel is unfortunately far less refined than the Supra, ans also the build quality is no match either, however as i want to slow myself down and try and save a little more on petrol, i think it may be the replacement i need with the price of petrol going the way it is now

Very nearly committed to 49K worth of ex demo GTR, after drooling over it for a while :D big car though, longer and wider than a Supra, and a fair bit heavier, but comparable on the build quality as i would expect, also had a look at the 370Z, which was also better build quality than the 350Z.

  6. Thanks for the info :) had a quick look at the Uprev system (Osiris Tuner), looks pretty good, but i notice that its only licenced for the one ECU, also doesn't include some of the more advanced controls for things like temp based timing and fuel control, or individual cylinder adjustment, and also couldn't find anything about adding your own choice of injectors or custom MFA, or MAP should you want to go F/I.

Think i would prefer the EMU or even a MAP2, and coupled with something like the LM-2 which will also read OBD2 besides wideband O2 and logging, should work just as well on the 350Z as the LM-1 has on my Supra.

But for me its the more hands on the better, however i can see the usefulness and attraction of the Osiris Tuner.

  7. Just go a hold of a workshop manual, interesting stuff, the ECU is a clever little bugger, but it doesn't run a wide band setup, however it does have a dual lambda feedback system, mainly for emissions, but it could make closed loop and even map based tuning interesting, the main problems i can see after a quick look is down to the OBD2 running constant active fault monitoring, but i'm sure that can be dealt with, just got to do some more reading.

  8. Morning , the STD ECU you find in my opinon is far to inteligent to work with a piggyback system, the system uses Widenbands to feedback to running AFR and trims all the time , so even if you intercept say the air flow meter wiring and fudge the AFM voltage( I have been tuning Japanese car for over 10 years) the car will 1st try to tune itself back to the correct AFR then it will put on a CEL light as it will notice it is trying to trimt he fuelling more than it should need to.

Re the ignition timing the car is far more intelligent to allow any gain to be had form tuning with a piggyback system , Nissan have tuned the car using fuel burn rates , we can tune the ignition a little for N/A and re work the ignition map completely for a F/I set up , but you have to work the Low Detonation map as well as the High Detonation map as the car works between the 2.

Haltech isnt a piggy back system in the real world , it allows you to map the fuel and ignition direct as well as the cam maps, but still allows the cam bus system to work properly.

You can buy a UPREV system to allow you to tweak you own maps but the UK cars cant be lived mapped.

Thanks for the info :) interesting, So are you're saying the std ECU is a true self learner, and uses a wideband lambda as std? if so i take it that it uses live monitoring and has constant feedback all through the RPM and load range, which precludes signal fudging.

Also do you mean that the UK ECU is not a self learner, and as such would probably be more amenable to signal fudging?

Interesting about the det maps, would make piggybacks even more of a problem, have you got a link to more info on the UPREV system please?

Is the US ECU different? as the us guys seem to use piggybacks a lot when going F/I.

  9. Thanks guys, i have had a look at some of the recommend searches, i should have been a little more specific, as i am primarily interested in the use of the Emanage Ultimate on the 350Z.

And also interested i talking to somebody with experience of the STD ECU.

I have also read of the ECU not allowing adjustment to bolt on mods, it obviously has limitations on the maximum airflow that it will see from the MAF, so i was wondering if a pigyback can get around this?

No really interested in ECU remap/reflash as i want to map myself, same applies to Haltec as this i thought was stand alone, and the HKS F-Con is dealer mapping only.

  10. 'm pretty sure you'll find ALL your answers via search. ;)

Sorry but my reason for asking was due to not turning up anything definitive from searching.

There is a link to ECU pin outs in technical that appearers to be dead, and i couldn't find anything particularly informative on using piggybacks, only unichip etc which i don't really view as one.

I was also hoping to strike up some dialogue with somebody that has fitted and tuned a piggyback ECU on a 350Z, sorry for wanting a chat with a technical type.

  11. As every bhp or ftlb is very hard won when it comes to tuning N/A engines, i though i would ask if the std ECU fights and mods made to the induction/plenum or exhaust?

Has anyone any experience of using a piggyback on the std ECU? can it be fooled easily to run higher AFRs in and out of closed loop? (for that matter what are closed loop parameters on this engine?)

Has anyone got an ECU pin out diagram?

  12. Thanks guys, i was interested as my Supra can embarrass any 350Z with its drinking habits ;) but the tax is only £200 odd per year, which helps make up for it :)

And i don't really want to pay double as well as extortionate fuel costs, incidentally what is the average fuel consumption for a 350Z?

  13. So do I, The sooner I sell the sooner I can instruct Jurgen to start looking for my new car :teeth:

So what is your new car going to be? incidentally my Supra came from Jurgen, nice guy and a good trader.

  14. True! they are very well built, as for huge power being cheap, its not, unless you call 6 -10K to convert to a single turbo with all the ancillaries.

You can get an easy 50-60 BHP for about 1K by decat etc,you then end up with around 380BHP, but to get big power takes a big single turbo, or big twins, then 8-900BHP is not out of reach, with 550-600BHP attainable with std engine internals, and 6-700BHP with a few carefully chosen engine parts.

Looks wise its very much an eye of the beholder thing, and i personally think they look great, and better than the 350Z IMO, they are the kind of car that people see in their rear view mirror and move over for, and i have seen people flinch at the sound of the screamer pipe when overtaking :)

  15. Not to offend anyone as the thread has gone both ways so far, but maybe you could 'upgrade/downgrade/whatever' by throwing your car in against a 350 in a px and add some cash, this way you may end up with a right spanker that's already had some power mods, so you still get that straight line speed you're after?

All the best either way and hope you get what you're after

My whole point was NOT to add cash, to reiterate, i am looking for a 350Z around the value of 10-11K with cash my way, but thanks for the bump anyway :)
