Custom printing on plastic? (steering wheel controls)

So if you haven't already guessed I'm busy fixing some long standing issues. One of them are the steering wheel controls. I'd like to take them off, respray them but retain the printed letting. What are my options? Would using those sticky/water based decals result in a little bump round all the lettering?
