Steering wheel only reduces sound

I have an aftermarket Pioneer head unit fitted in my new car and discovered today that the steering control reduces the volume when pressed both up and down? I can't turn up the volume on the wheel. Just the head unit.

Is this an easy fix?

You need the correct patch lead for your steering wheel controls to work with an aftermarket head unit, yours might be missing this or it may not be pushed all the way in properly. I seem to remember having a similar issue when I fitted my head unit and I just hadn't pushed the lead in properly.
