  1. Just a quick peruse of the figures. The 350z makes around 260 ft.lbs of torque (from 3.5 liters).

    Most of the 180 - 200 bhp motorcycles get from 90 - 110 ft.lbs torque.

    Multiply the capacities up and.... it would seem that motorcycle make the same amount of torque but stacks more BHP!

    I do admit that these (can, safely) rev through 11000 rpm, but, still, what the hell? (And this from just 4 cylinders BTW)

    These are normally aspirated, Kawasaki have released a SUPERCHARGED thou, the figures for that are getting on for being unbelievable!

  2. 100 BHP per litre? What is it about car engines? I have an old 1996 918 cc Fireblade that makes 130 REAR wheel BHP. (and that on carburetors).

    Normally aspirated, ticks over smoothly, etc. And its not a short life but happy one either, this oldy has nearly 60,000 miles up with only one valve shim changed.

    The latest litre bikes are pushing 200 BHP.. and are quite happy running around road or track and are Euro 4 compliant.

    I can appreciate that cars have to be tuned for torque as much as power if only to shift their body weight, but, surely, someone at Nissan must have looked at motorcycle engine design?

  3. '06 rev up, 56,000 miles. (So far dodged the oil burning problems, runs like a train... Pretty unstoppable)

     

    I've been reading up on the clutch system on the Z. The consensus seems to be that it is a bit of an Achilles heel. Mine is at 56K so is getting into the danger zone.

    I can see the point of replacing the heavy dual mass with a lighter single mass flywheel, faster engine response, more robust etc. But it seems to come with some engine damping problems in that low rev chatter is intrusive.

    Are there any heavier single mass flywheels that will give better engine damping?

    I need to get my shopping list together for any necessary work needed to make it as bombproof as possible by next May (Nurburgring). Call me pessimistic, but if something is weak, that's when it will go!

    I've factored in brake pads, tyres, fluids and still have enough in the piggy bank for a clutch job.

  4. Quick shout for this garage. Just had her in for the rear silencer box flange cut out and a link pipe welded in, had an oil/filter change too.

    Got change from £150, took them less than a day.

    Great service, friendly people who really know these things. There is usually at least one other Z in their being fettled, that always gives me confidence.

  5. I find the clutch to be both light and nicely incremental. Mind you, I've just come from a Clio sport, that clutch is both stupid heavy and an on - off switch.

    My only beef is that first gear revs the B's out of it and second is just that bit too high to start on a slight incline. Level or downhill I use second.

  6. One thng's for sure, even if its slightly damp, don't try and follow a Clio! Best time I've had at the ring was a wet track, all the power houses slipping and sliding, the Clio stuck to the road and running rings around them Normal service resumed once the track dried though........

  7. Hi all

     

    After nearly burning my eyes out following the bucket loads of threads on the 'American' site, it does appear that some resolution was finally arrived at.

    It seems that the bores were designed with a taper (!) and that the thin oil control rings would not seal properly. Revised rings 'seem' to have cured the fault.

    Alternatively, the extra variable exhaust valve control introduced on the rev up gave too much vacuum in the bores, sucking oil up into the combustion chamber.

    Maybe a combination of the two?

    Looks like the early 350's had it about right, and lower tax too!!!

    Bought an 06 rev up more with heart than head!

    Done some research and found a mountain of posts on the US forums about excessive oil consumption. But it all seemed to tail off. Did Nissan finally correct it, or am I a lucky one as mine seems to be quite happy, no discernible usage in the couple of thou miles I've done so far. Mostly Mway with some local driving. I've not been particularly heavy footed, but it has done a few spirited miles, just to test it out.

    I can't believe that Nissan didn't finally address this problem, or did the bad ones just demise?

  9. Done some experimenting. The best way I have found is to use the cradle with the crocodile clip insert. This I can clip onto the passenger sun visor quickly and unobtrusively.

    If you hadn't guessed, its for my next ring visit. So, I can have the camera running, but tucked out of sight, then, once through the barrier checks, clip it on and clear off!

  11. Out on the Fireblade today, North Wales coast road. All the way along the motorway and along the coast road, I must have seen (passed) thirty or more SLK's. It was like they were spawning. Did give a wave to the guy in the Z caught up in the traffic jam on the Chester by-pass though. Was it a meet, or are these the two seater of choice these days?

  12. Hi all.

     

    I'm just trying to put my tyre budget together for the Z. At the moment, it runs stock tyre widths back and front but has the 20mm spacers fitted to the back wheels.

    It is my understanding that the Z understeers, (pushes the front wide) near the limits. Fitting wider tyres to the front seems to be the fix to make the steering more neutral.

    My thinking is that the rear spacers will be exaggerating the understeer?

    So..... Do I fit wider tyres to the front and leave as is, or remove the rear spacers with wider tyres on the front, or fit wider tyres and spacers to the front as well as the spacers on the rear????

     

    At the cost of decent tyres I'd like to get it right first time!

  13. Did the dance, even used my 'ring stopwatch, no flashing light. But... It now starts up at 1.3K RPM and drops within a minute or two down to 800 RPM. Temp comes up much quicker...... Mystified!

  14. Hi all

     

    The flange joining the back box to the main system is getting thin on mine. My dealer says they cut this flange out and weld a join in there to make it good. I wondered if there is a link pipe section sold anywhere to make the job DIY? Looking at it, it shouldn't be hard to make a piece up myself, so I'll be surprised if there isn't a proprietary fix for this weak point.
