  1. Yes I do have an aftermarket gearknob and coincidently the day I fitted it was the day I first noticed it rattle, the thing is my mate said to me on the way to japfest he could hear the rattle, but I could not hear it, I got the knob from japfest and fitted it while I was there (not using the grips and rubber method :bangin: ) the old knob came off really easy that's why I continued to replace it.

Anyway, on the way home I noticed the rattle and my mate said that is what he was on about before. I have tightened the new gearknob by hand and it is tight but I don't want to over do it, especially if I have damaged my gearbox in anyway. I suppose I could put the old knob back on and see if it still happens.

  2. Hi guys, I need a bit of advice- following on from my previous post 'aaaarrrgh please help' I reported a rattle from my gearstick which happens between 4.5k and 5.5k revs, nobody could seem to diagnose/guess what the problem could be.... Well today while driving I found that if I apply a small amount of pressure to the gearstick it stopped, i.e if I was in third gear, I push the gearstick a tiny bit towards the stereo and the noise stopped, let it go and the rattle continues, I called my mechanically minded mate and he said it could be the gear linkages, can anyone confirm or deny that this could be my problem and if it is can you tell me if its a big job and a rough idea of costs.

    Thanks.

  3. Just thought I would show you yesterdays wrapping/ wrapping repairs and my gearknob.

My new gearknob, what do you think I should do about the gaiter?

my ocd got the better of me so I had to repair the front bumper at the edges.

Same with the pocket on the door.

    Next was the ashtray

    Then the seatbelt things.

And finally last weeks passenger door wraps and b pillars that I have already shown.

    Likey or no likey?

  4. I was on track with an mps and the zed is alot faster. Both myself and the g man were in Wales and both were faster than focus rs300's and the mps.. This is all on video  saying than my 350z is evenly matched on track with 370z and as soon as my exhaust gets altered to a 3" centre section I'll be faster :teeth:eh george? Lol

Were either of the zeds stock at this point?

  5. Why would you think that? A VXR is 240 bhp and about 300kgs lighter than a zed....

    What he said ^^^^

First off: I don't condone such behaviour on public roads. And neither does the forum.

Second: YOu'll be surprised just how many cars out there carn embarass a Zed in a straight line. You gotta remember a Zed is bloody heavy, and at 280ish bhp, its not much more than most hot hatches nowadays. Hell, a Mazda 3MPS would probably have you to 60.

+1. A mate of mine has a Mazda 3 mps and he is under the impression that the zed is a bit quicker, I'm not so sure, I just hope we never meet at the lights because I don't think I could ever live it down if his boring, bland, undercover demon beat the zed. The stats say the zed is quicker but the Mazda is lighter and has more torque

  6. My mate said he thinks it could be the exhaust that needs tightening as it makes the noise in all gears, but would this be so noticeable around the gearstick if it was the exhaust?

I might try putting the oem gearknob back on to see if its something to do with that.

  7. I had a very similar experience, is it a rattle or is it more like a buzzing or humming?

If it is a buzzing/humming sound then you probably need a gearbox oil change and wouldn't hurt to put some molyslip in also.

Hopefully just a bit of loose trim of or bolt or washer somewhere though

No its definatly not a humming/buzzing. If you can imagine a loose washer around a bolt vibrating, that's what I would say it sounds like.

Does anyone know if you can remove the rubber thing under the gaiter that is cover in cotton wool like stuff? Again does anyone know how to tighten the gearstick not the gearknob? Thanks

  8. Could also be something silly like the windscreen rubbing against the dash plastic. Can be a bit deceptive as to where it's coming from. If it's that, just required a few strips of high density foam popped in the gap. Should stop it.

It's definatly coming from the gearstick area, it just sounds like its coming from behind the dash until you put your ear close to everything

  9. *Really* try tightening the knob. I had the exact same problem, like a washer dingling at those sort of revs. I was convinced the gearbox was giving out but I tightened up the gear stick and the problem went away - and that was 10K miles ago.

To be clear, it wasn't the knob only, it was turning the entire gearstick.

Obviously don't force and break it, and apologies if you've already had a go and it didn't work.

I had a noise before when a bloke from halfrauds took my gearknob off and he didn't tighten it up properly, I tightened it, then it stopped. Now with my new gearknob my gaiter is quite loose and does not sit touching the bottom of the gearknob, so it could be that except if I try and rattle the gaiter myself scant get it to replicate the sound in the slightest.

How do I tighten the gearstick then?

  10. :pmzmanalex::thumbs:

    Why?

Lol, I know what your saying but I did anyway, just incase he has the answer.

poor guy is t :bangin: rying to wind things down, pming him when your car makes a noise doesnt help :lol::lol:

 everyone says :pmzmanalex: and :pmr35lee: for everything, you see it you do it :bangin:

  11. I have the same - i thought it was something to do with the aircon or the heating system. I get the noise intermittently after about 30 mins of driving then seems to go away. Curious if anyone has an answer.

Mine only started today and doesn't seem to stop as I drove back from japfest it was still doing it when I was home, its not loud, it sounds a bit like a loose washer jingling around the gearstick, but there is not one there. I have an aftermarket gearknob that is quite small and there is a couple of inches of gearstick exposed.

  12. cant you just sit there in neutral and hit the range you mention to give you more time?

I did try that in my back garden but it was so loud I couldn't do it for long enough because of the other residents, I'm sure it did not make the noise plus in neutral you don't get the feedback through the gearstick which is where I'm sure its coming from. It seems more of a vibration thing

  13. I know what you are saying and it does sound like that but I have tried to tighten the gearknob and no joy. I tried lifting the gaiter and plastic surround to see anything still no joy, its quite difficult to pinpoint it in time as it doesn't take long to get through this part of the rev range at legal speeds.

  14. Hi guys, my zed seems to have developed a rattle between 4500-6000 rpm, when you are driving it sounds like it is coming from behind the dash, but if you put your head near the gear knob you can tell it is definatly coming from there, I tried while my mate drove and vice versa. It's not loud and it doesn't sound worrying but then again it could be bad so if anyone has any idea please let me know.

    Thanks

  15. The centre console was the first part I wrapped and it certainly isn't easy but is doable with some patience. I found it was easiest to start from the middle and lay as much vinyl down without heating it. Mines not 100% perfect but a massive improvement from before

    Heres the results :p

    7da731ed.jpg

I look at that picture and think I have to give it a try, it looks perfect mate and so much better than standard.

  16. I had a car previously with the front wrapped, it got a rip in the vinyl on day two (bad luck!) and they put a patch on it which overall looked more obvious than that, within a few days I had forgotten about it and like Grover says you will barely notice it.

Sterling work though, I am going to have a go at my centre console soon as well...great stuff wrapping as its all reversible should you balls it up!

Mate, I was planning on doing the centre console too but after trying wrapping fo the first time I think I will give it a miss, it is quite tedious and even the graphics guy that I bought it from would not even give me a quote to do the centre console and he does it for a living!

Thanks for the input so far guys.
