Fitting gear and handbrake gaiter.

Bought a set of Alcatraz a ones from top gaiters on eBay. First problem is with the gear stick one. Took old one off and fitted it fine, but then screwing the gear stick back on didn't work as it doesn't tighten quite right. If I under tighten it so it's straight then the little o ring rattles about but it won't turn one more full rotation. Any ideas why it knight be going back on differently?

 

Secondly, the handbrake one I have in the pic, doesn't anyone know if that's supposed to go over what's already there or replace it? If so how do I get it off?
