  1. maybe some explanation would help me understand what went wrong

The engine made to much power (Pressure in the Cylinder) for the head gasket and stud combination on this 100mm bore engine. The pressure in the cylinder pushed the heads up enough (Maybe a couple of thousands of an inch) so that the gas could escape into the cooling system.

    Hope that helps

 thanks Dan, so in your mind the gasket was 'fine' but the studs wasn't up for the task? Or maybe a mix of both?

I'm going with a bit of both.... These are the things you find out pushing the boundries!

  3. We are pretty sure the heads lifted as there are a few "grey" areas where it looks like gas could have passed. The defined sealing ring has been smudged in a few places.

Also we found some of the studs easier to undo (Still very tight) than others so I feel the studs must have stretched the tinyiest of amounts.

One pic shows an area where you can see the gasket material has been deposited onto the liner and then the water has boiled and corroded right next to it.

We will be using a bigger step, Cosworth gaskets (Not made by cometic) and larger studs to pull it all down! Its a real shame as the engine had run perfectly. Bores, bearing and especially the tappets are in 100% perfect condition!

  4. I'm afraid the latest update is bad news :-(

At 825BHP at the Hubs (approx 950bhp at crank) WITHOUT NOS the headgasket has failed. We're putting this down to the cylinder head lifting and are now beginning the process of stripping the engine out to see what we can do to increase the sealing loads....

    DOH!!!!

This is the joy of pushing the Envelope!

  5. Engine ran in today.

Did a quick power run at the end with no water Meth and on old VPower fuel and she made 634bhp on the wastegates at 11psi. Thats only 20bhp down on the old set-up at 18psi with water meth!

Video of the power run is here

Enjoy. Now to inspect the engine and get the nos system up and running!

  6. Just about ready to fire her up now. All fluids filled and primed for oil pressure now :-)

Will be firing her up in the morning we hope :-)

Check out the £120 worth of inlet manifold gaskets!!!! Nissan UK are taking the Pee.... :-( Needed a window regulator today and they wanted £340!!!!

  7. Nos install is coming together now.

With regards to solenoid location, distance and HIT we are happy that everything will work nicely. Tony is actually running a full Wizards of Nos Maximiser with full data feed back. Fuel Pressure, Nos Pressure, Boost Pressure and TPS will all be feed into the Nos ECU to give the ideal amount of fuel and Nos.
