  1. Actually, I'm going to try a compression test before I spend any more money. I'm not going to carry on throwing money at it randomly when there could be a serious underlying issue!
  2. Ok, good news is I got a code! Bad news is it's not in any way helpful. I got 300, which I assume is p0300, apparently a random misfire. I guess I need to try a coil pack next!
  3. Oh, and thanks for the advice regarding coil packs - I tried disconnecting the 3 on the drivers side which definitely made a difference, I can't get my hands down the side of the inlet pipe work to disconnect the other bank though! Cleaning the maf and changing the plugs had no effect whatsoever. If it is low compression on one or more cylinder could I expect to see a blue smoke from the exhaust, especially from a cold start? All I'm getting is a bit of white which I assume to be condensation rather than burning water
  4. That's superb, thank you. Real fear is that it's a lack of compression, would this throw the engine intermittently in to limp mode? I'll have to borrow a compression tester if nothing conclusive comes off stamping on the pedal in an erratic fashion, fingers crossed. Really don't want to start messing with piston rings or valve seats.
  5. Hi. As some may have seen in the introductions section, I have a high mileage project car a little rough around the edges which I am doing up. However, it is a little rough running, as I'll explain. Problem is I find it hard to tell if it's misfiring or not - I've never really heard one running its best before so can't tell what it should be acting like! It fires up straight away every time but the idle sounds a little unsure, very low, a touch rough. It will rev up reasonably keen. However, the idle seems to randomly jump up for a while, then maybe drop back down for a bit, as I said - seems unsure of itself! Then the engine management light came on and it wouldn't rev over 2,500, seemed to put itself in to limp mode! I cycled it off and on and the light is still on but it's running as it was before. I've just changed the plugs and cleaned the MAF. I'm lost and really need help - anyone local be able to offer any help or advice?! I'd just like to hear a z running normally, or plugging it into diags would be brilliant but I can't get it to a garage as it's not insured. I'm in the west mids, DE11, if anyone who knows these could help if be more than willing to swing them some beer tokens! Thanks for all advice in advance, Toby
  6. Hi, As a newbie with a do-er up-er I'm giving the Z a service. I'm fine with this but have a couple of questions specific to the 350Z; - Is it simple enough to change the gear and diff oil and is there a guide? I've read the recommended fluids, is it worth doing myself or is it reasonable at a dealer? - I'm sure I have oil in my spark plug bores. I've read about the cause and cure - originally the complete covers had to be replaced (ridiculous), but now you can replace just the seals - is that true? If so, is there any good threads around? Also, will I need to replace any other gaskets during this process such as rocker cover gaskets, inlet manifold etc? Many thanks in advance, Toby
  7. Wow, thanks for the welcome! I'll work my way through your responses later when I finish work and maybe add some pics as is. I'll certainly be doing all the work myself unless there's any jobs you think are not worth doing - I've heard the transmission and diff oil is a bit of a faff? Have a feeling it's going to be leaking cam cover gaskets around the plug bores causing the miss, my uncle who I got the car from had the issue sorted last year for it to return again but can't remember exactly what was done - said its to do with ignition and needed something clearing out. I'll have a look in the next couple if days! Oh, and I'm based in the west mids!
  8. Hi all! Just registered - plenty of questions. My uncle has owned an '04 sunset 350z GT from new and since clocked up 211,000 miles! Anyway, it has a few issues so he's bought himself a 4-series BMW and I've took the zed off his hands to tidy up - so help! List of problems with which I may need your help; - The locking wheel nuts are stuck as they are over-tightened and worn - Front 2 tyres are completely shot - Front and rear bumpers need paint/repair - Whole car needs touch ups and a polish/wax (washed once a year for its life!) - aircon is losing pressure - a regas only lasted him a couple of weeks - misfiring above about 3000 revs (on 4+6 apparently) yet starts and idles as sweet as anything - Needs a complete and thorough service - needs a wheel refurb for corrosion - a new headlight washer as one is smashed - drivers seat won't move forward or back - oil pressure gauge stuck at max - CD player jammed - sat nav blank backlit screen I think that's all! Top priority is tyres, misfire, service and drivers seat so I can actually reach the pedals! I know it seems a lot - but I got it for a bit of a family rate . Anyway - nice to meet you! Toby
