I caved and bought Ghost Recon Wldlands. Despite the horrendous bugs (and they're still there, from getting trapped in the landscape to textures not loading to entire mission-critical objects not loading!), there's a wealth of fun content here. Map is huge, loads to do albeit repetitive, but no denying it is fun.

Frustrating though is that the air defence and hammers spawn back after about 30mins, which seems ridiculous. And god forbid you come across a Unidad force, that just escalates like a madman.

I also bought a GTX 1080 following the huge £150 price drop before the 1080Ti is launched, and I'm all set for Mass Effect Andromeda this week B) Bought Origin Access too, £20 for the year plus £10 off games, so it's only cost me £15 so far really as I was always going to get MEA

Also, if anyone has a GTX 1070 or 1080, I have a code available for either For Honor or Wildlands if you want to make me an offer for it. Must be one of those two cards though sadly, and even a cheeky offer will do as it'll just go to waste otherwise.

Wait a minute, weren't you telling me that it wasn't worth spending money on etc?:lol:

I haven't bought it (yet) but not because of what you said, just because I thought I'd wait a while to see if any used ones came in at a decent price.

Good write up about it on the other page btw.

I know, I know! It's a typical Ubisoft game, riddled with faults but underneath a great game trying to get out.

Ironically the full release has many more faults than the beta had, and it's terribly optimised for the more powerful cards. My 1080 is barely any better than the 980 before it in terms of maintaining 60fps, and the patch this week made it worse.

2D gaming is pretty much on its arse to me now, sadly. Loving my PSVR at the moment. Lots of new content being released every week. Played through Batman Arkham VR for the first time at the weekend - it's only an hour long but it's outstanding.

Just bought a 1070 :D

Self build or pre built?

I can highly recommend PC Specialist if not self building, they really are superb and excellent customer service.

I enjoy building them myself. From paring things perfectly with the motherboard, RAM and so on so all the parts are 100% harmonious, to custom cooling solutions.

Lol my last build I modified the side panel with a 300mm fan from something else and bought a hydroponic 6" extraction fan for the back and the whole thing sat inside a custom cabinet with the ducting coming out of the back and a 300mm inlet on the side. Worked well and at low RPM was very quiet. I remember trying to work out what the optimum fan speed was for each of them to flow and extract air the most efficiently.

But in my old age sometimes I just want to plug and play.

I'm happy to offer free advice on PC building to anyone who wants it. To list my credentials would sound like bragging and I already do enough of that. Suffice it to say I have been building PCs for well over 30 years. I don't do budget, by the way, if you're looking to spend 500 quid or less and/or are not playing games, you don't need my advice, buy a ready-made pc. :)

If it's a gaming PC, just set your budget then get the fastest gfx card you can, at least 16GB of RAM, and the fastest CPU you can. Everything else is secondary. Get an ugly case, get a 5400rpm hard disk, just don't compromise on the core stuff. Oh, and get the best controller you can, be that m&k or proper joypad, as that's what you'll be interacting with.

There you go, done. No credentials, but it's the right approach :D

Horizon Zero Dawn on the PS4 in 4K is simply glorious. Even on the regular PS4 it is still extreamly pretty. Very interesting plot although a little slow at the beginning. Jack of all trades but master at none, its set up the market for an absolutely killer sequel though!

Not the best advice I've seen...

Don't get a 5400rpm HDD. That's silly. Most games would be fine, but some still use the HDD to load textures and stuff. Not to mention your load times would be awful. You should arguably stretch to an SDD - I've never really rated them, but you can't deny the benefit of instant load times.

Stock cooling I wouldn't recommend, but you can probably get away with. Same goes for a case. But there are huge cooling and noise benefits from having better ones. This is where buying used stuff on the cheap gives amazing results for very little.

And the one thing you should never compromise on, the most important part of any PC... the PSU. It's not just a case of going for a high wattage, you need it to be a quality unit (e.g. Corsair / Seasonic etc). Don't go for the Tesco value one, because it will fail, and when it does, it can take the rest of your PC with it.

As for peripherals, a decent monitor is important, mouse too, but any cheap keyboard will do.

Why would you buy a cheap keyboard? It's the one thing you interact with every single time, a cheap and uncomfortable one is going to ruin the experience. It's like getting a cheap crappy seat for your car: If the rest is amazing, matters not if you're uncomfortable.

And I was kidding about the 5400. Can you even buy drives that slow any more?! You're right about the PSU though, I forgot that bit. I like the Corsair modular ones, means you don't have a ton of spare cables floating around.

Stock cooling is fine. Nothing in my setup is any different than how it came from factory, and I've no desire to faff around with overclocking for an extra 2fps. Just get a better gfx card in the first place :D

The reason you are only getting 2fps for your overclock is because you know nothing. :)

Condescending much? Erm, eff you buddy, I used to do some serious overclocks back in the day, but then I realised it was a law of very much diminishing returns and I'd rather play games than run stress tests.

Fine, oh mighty wise one who is clearly the god of all things, enlighten us. Tell us how you're going to revolutionise the PC gaming industry outside of putting a bigger fan/water cooling/pelting cooling on a chip, all of which costs money that could go to a better card in the first place.

Condescending much?? Lol, don't like a taste of your own medicine? What a surprise. :) You got trolled.

Guys, don't PM Dan with your tyre questions, all you need to know is that they need to be black and rubbery. There ya go. Dan, you can change your sig now, I told them everything they need to know. :)
