Junction 17 Cars, Peterborough - A Review - The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Hi there,

Also from Glasgow. I spotted a 58 plate 350Z on their website the Saturday before last. It had pretty high mileage at 96k but it had 1 previous owner and apparently had a full service history. I done an HPI check and it came out OK, looked great in the pictures and the guys down the phone sounded brilliant. I explained to them on more than one occasion that I would be coming a fair distance so wanted them to be honest with me as I would rather not travel that distance to find out the car was not up to the mark. However, I was reassured that the car was in excellent condition, "very straight up for the mileage", with no marks other than some minor stone chips and a scratch on the rear bumper which wouldn't even show up in photographs. They also assured me they would service it before it left their garage. It looked great in the pictures, and I was convinced that a garage with the caliber of cars in their showroom must be trustworthy, so I placed my token deposit and told them I would be down on Tuesday.

I arrived and the bumper was covered in scratches and stone chips, and all around the body there was dents and dings which I wasn't told about, despite stressing how far I was travelling. There was no receipts for any work having been done, so the only history was the service book. In the service book there was a year missing from it, which normally wouldn't be the end of the world, except that in that year the car had travelled over 30k miles with no proof of any servicing having been carried out in that time. There was also no stamp in the book from the service they had apparently done the day before. The windscreen had been replaced at some point - badly. The rubber trim along the top was cut about 2 inches too short and was bubbled in other areas; "it came in like that" they said. Again, another thing they hadn't mentioned. There was only 1 key, and they were unwilling to supply a new one, nor were they willing to drop the price in order for me to supply one myself.

The final straw came when I couldn't find the lock nut key. The salesman frantically searched the car for it to no avail, coming back with "ah yes well they repaired a puncture when it got serviced yesterday so the mechanic must have it. I'll ask him to get it". Waited 20 minutes, still nothing. Asked him if he had any luck, to which he told me there were now 3 people on the case of the mystery lock nut key! Having uncovered the various lies preceding this one, I decided to see for myself how the search was going. I popped out the door and had a look into the garage, where the shutter door was open, to indeed find 3 people. Three people sitting on their arses having their tea!

I told him it wasn't for me and left, and to my surprise actually got the deposit back without any fighting.

I flew to Luton on Saturday past and happily purchased a nice 07 HR in a private sale, and I could not be happier with it (will post a thread in the introductions section later).

TL;DR J17 are cowboys, walked away. 10/10 would not touch them again.

Thanks for sharing your experience. It seems they still don't want to learn how to sell cars fairly with good service even after they are well aware of the problems 350Z owners have had with them.

When you see the website and type of cars they sell, you expect to be purchasing the best cars in the country but it seems they want to operate like a 'dodgy' back street dealer.

Glad to have seen this post as I have been looking for a 350 for the past couple of months and had, like many on here, put J17 on my shortlist. I will now think very carefully before going to see anything with them. Thanks for the post and keeping it up to date.

Got mine from Jct 17 3 weeks ago,, Dream car for me,, turns out to be " Owned by the brother in law of one of their sales reps " dut all the paper work is Jct 17 and it had Jct 17 on the add online,, then suddenly becomes a private sale,, I went ahead with it,, they sprayed all the minor scuffs I wanted doing and in fairness attended to everything inside I pointed out as not perfect,, but within two weeks of getting it home I need new clutch, Im thinking thats a little weird for a " Sunday car " with 40 k on the clock...

I went to look at 3 cars at the Nottingham branch as the Internet said they were immaculate and the prices were fairly high (sometimes an indication of a decent car, pay more get more??).

The ginger car I originally wanted (in immaculate condition) had actually had a front ended. The bumper was cracked and miss aligned, the interior was missing switches and panels. Orange interior worn and ripped

The white car next to it had also had a bump but thud at least tried to cover the issue by spraying over the amaze and rust on the bonnet edge.

Finally a huuuugeky overpriced blue import with gt4 wheels that was also massively shabby.

I drove 3 hours to view these cars and they were all wrecks. As a 'specialist' I couldn't believe the state of the cars and the prices were 8k plus for cars that I genuinely wouldn't pay 5k for. When I said I wasn't interested as they were hugely overpriced and damaged he looked at me like they were brand new cars and I was smoking crack!

Probably the worst condition cars I've ever seen, do yourself a favour and steer clear of them

Darn it darn it darn it!!!!! How I wish I'd seen this thread before I bought my 350z from Junction17 2 weeks ago. I would have steered well clear. I'll post more details when I get to a proper keyboard but the long and short is they sold me a car which had literally just passed MOT in their pet MOT garage and a 'thorough pre-sale inspection', both of which failed to spot the totally rusted up bonnet catch which was a clear MOT and safety failure. 24 hours after purchase I was driving at 60 down a B road and the bonnet flew up, inverted and smashed into the roof and windscreen. Both front wings also damaged near the hinge point. They've been utter tossers about it, 'sold as seen' essentially, even though it should have failed MOT because both primary and secondary catches are totally fubarred. I now have an independent Dekra engineers report to prove it, but they still aren't interested in fixing the car for me. Trading Standards and small claims court here I come. Utter scheisters . Will post more detail shortly. Legally, they don't have a leg to stand on. I have to wonder if they are a bit dim as well as being clueless about customer service basics and road safety.

That is horrendous, I was advised on Facebook not to use them at all. Looking at the photos of their cars closely they don't look that great. Scuffed bumpers, missing aerial etc.. But a price tag of nearly £9000?

Dread to imagine the kind of money they're making off people.

Pre sale inspection??? They picked up my car with no inspection.

I'm guessing this is pre-sales as in before the customer collects. I think the chap above was sold the car and told that his car had been thoroughly inspected to ensure he was getting a solid car. When it fact it sounds like they put it through a dodgy MOT and didn't inspect it.

But not inspecting any cars they purchase to sell at their forecourt also makes sense as they are clearly selling some rubbish (not saying for a second this applies to yours, as I almost bought it haha). But if they are not inspecting a car before they spend their own money, why would they inspect it before asking a customer to spend more.

Cowboys.

Yep I'm afraid so - I'm still having no luck with them despite reporting them to Trading Standards, getting an independent inspection on my car and going back and forth for two weeks. I've finally given up patience with them and will be getting my insurance to repair my car .... but will be taking them to court to get my insurance Excess and engineer report cost back as a minimum, and the full value of the repair back if Admiral will back me up (which they should, since the engineer's report is so unequivocal). Quoting from the report: "The deficiencies in the bonnet catch operation should have been identified both in any reasonably accomplished pre-sale inspection but crucially should have been identified on the MOT test inspection as a point of failure on primary catch function. "

These guys are utter cowboys and I suggest anyone else spotting this in advance of making a purchase, steers well clear.

Oh - and to add insult to injury, turns out the supposedly 'HPI clear' car they sold me ..... has outstanding finance on it.

So the cars not yours then it's the finance companies?

This is a pretty important point.

Some more knowledgeable (cough*gobshite*) person like Dan  may know better but I'm fairly sure this adds all sorts of complications to proceedings......doesn't this mean he's inherited the finance as well?

Might also be worthwhile reporting the incident/MOT tester/testing station to VOSA.

Hmmm yes clearly something very iffy going on there with plenty of money passing hands over and above the cost of the MoT no doubt.

Sorry to hear about your troubles. As has been said, there are plenty of internet threads about these guys, including many on this forum. A quick google on any dealer is a good idea before a purchase.

I believe some of the cars can be ok, but the after sales is really bad.

I actually went and viewed a GT-R there a few months back and wasn't very impressed. The car had lots of chips, corrosion, blemishes etc and that was AFTER it had been to the bodyshop for a front end spray, they just left the rest.

To actually get a test drive, I pretty much had to agree a sale price and agree to purchase if all was ok on the test drive. I then had to wait 20 mins while they sent a guy out with a jerry can to get some petrol so I could drive it....Needless to say, I didn't buy it.
