The DRL itself has a switch back relay build in, so it will not flash white and amber when I indicate. And I've also double checked the controller that i've brought, it's got 4 functions; 1.) Auto switch on the DRL when I start the engine. 2.) Switch off white LEDs completely when I indicate. 3.) White DRL will remain on for about 20 seconds when I switch off my engine. 4.) Dim the DRL by 30% ish when dipped lights are switched on. Dipped/side lights will also be replaced with LED 501s. And also considering a 6k DR2 to replace current warm white. Looking forward to seeing the end result Yep, all component arrived. Just need to split the reflector and back casing. I'm soaking them in hot soapy water now, tomorrow will put them in the freezer. Then I'm going to buy a set of hobby knife hopefully it will split easily without damaging anything. Once everything is done, I'll then have to pick a good weekend (no rain) to disassemble my front bumper and lights. I live in an apartment hence all this has to happen on the visitor's car park. So will need to borrow my mate's rotary tool to cut a slot to put the LED PBC in. Will have to wait for a bit now unfortunately. Meanwhile somewhere in Huddersfield Gtechniq C4 plastic restorer A little bit on the expensive side for a small bottle but worth the money as you only need few drops and it lasted for 6 months. Just need to clean the surface with some IPA (Indian pale ale) and off you go with the G-power. I think I used just about 10 drops for both wing mirrors and front grill. Restored the front bumper grill Used them before on the wing mirror's base before and it lasted about 7 months. So topped up with more G-power! Hopefully a small slot about 4mm wide should be good enough to slide it in but might have issue with bits inside the reflector. veeg33 Posted April 4, 2015 Author Share Posted April 4, 2015 (edited) Small update today. Managed to loan a Dremel as I've failed to split them reflectors. A bit messy but did the job well. Here's a pic of trial fitment of the PCB You can see the PCB when they are not switched on so I'm considering to include the original silver reflector from the DRL that I had modified, to keep it tidy when it's switched off. This means more Dremel'ing tomorrow on the reflector to fit the silver reflector in. Here's a pic of the LEDs Dark test Will be sorting out the other reflector tomorrow. Edit: I wish there are longer PCB out there that I can use as donor but unfortunately this is the only dual function DRL I can find on EBay. This is a 8 LEDs set, I going a 14 LEDs set will be much better to fill up the reflectors from top to bottom. Yep, I think I'll mostly "Dremel" a bigger slot tomorrow. Brought a black silicone + adhesive tube this morning from Screwfix so hopefully will get them in tomorrow. Both sides are now in place and hopefully secure with some silicone. Unfortunately, due to over handling of one of the LED PBC wiring, one of them managed to snap off =( so will need to get it re-solder again tomorrow at work (after working hours of cause) It does looks a lot better with the silver reflectors in. Could had made my own relay circuit and 2 strips of LEDs (amber and white). The LEDs being tested with a 9v battery. They will be around 50% brighter when powered by 12v car battery once fitted Apologies, quality of the pics are not great as the amber LEDs looks yellowish. The dark test Ordered a new set of DR2 6k and they arrived today, just waiting for them silvertec bulbs to arrive and I'm all ready to install. veeg33 Posted April 11, 2015 Author Share Posted April 11, 2015 Dyno run today A little SC MX-5 with Nos Here's the results: 1st run (as arrived) 261.2hp/331Nm 2nd run (HKS super hybrid panel filter) 264.4hp/332Nm 3rd run (panel filter removed, filter box cleaned, filter holder replaced) 266.3hp/333Nm. Seems the filter is not making much difference after all. I guess I won't bother with performance filter at next service interval. As long it is filtering the air going in, I'm happy. 276hp from stock/new and after 10yrs, my zed only lost 12bhp. All healthy, all good. veeg33 Posted April 18, 2015 Author Share Posted April 18, 2015 (edited) Took the opportunity of good weather today to fit my DRL and replace the rear windscreen water pump. Front bumper off, but not completely. Fairly easy, just 10 x M10 bolts at the bottom (on the bottom undertray) then 3 £ M10 (each side) under the headlights. The wheel arch linings are pretty flexible so I just bend them to get to those 3 x M10 bolts. Then remove 6 plastic studs on top (I use 2 flat head screwdrivers) and pull the front bumper out. I kept the headlight washer attached as I can access my reflectors to swap them. Then remove 4 x M10 bolts to remove the headlight. Once it's off, I replaced the side light with LED, indicator with Silvertec and 6k DR2 main beam. Then using T-tap, I tap into the indicator +te wire and the side light. This is to trigger the amber DRL when indicating and the side light tapping is to dim the DRL when side lights are being switched on. These T-tap are pretty good, just crimp them on with pliers. Then a simple spade connector goes in the t-tap. Simple-ssssssss! Tested them, but first attempt wasn't successful as I've tapped into the wrong polarity Lucky I've used T-tap, I can just fix/cover it with some insulation tape. 2nd attempt was successful. Tested the in indicators, works well for the first few flashes but after 4/5 flashes, the switch back doesn't seems to work properly as it was flashing amber and white rather than just amber. I'm guessing the controller's relay timing might be a little bit off. £6 controller from Hong Kong delivered, hence not really expecting it to be perfect tbh. And it seems the dimmer is also not working but I'll need to see in the dark later tonight. Love the clear darken reflectors. Looks good even without DRL in action While I have the bumper out, I've swapped the rear windscreen wiper water pump out as well. Managed to buy one locally for £24 brand new aftermarket from AZ Motor Spares. It was a direct replacement so fits perfectly. Literally took me about 5mins to replace. But before that, I unplugged it and plug the new pump in to check before I swap them. All good, then I unplugged the rubber hose, pull the pump out (be ready to block the hole with your thumb), new pump in, connector back in, done. Can't wait for darkness now........ Here's when I start up my engine Here's when main beams are on, the DRL controller dimmed the DRL by around 30-40% and its less harsh and can be looked directly without glaring (good for MOT) Hazard light test - as before, the switch back relay on the controller is not great. Sometimes it flashes between amber and white, sometimes just amber. A little bit annoying but I can live with it for now. I absolutely loved it. Good to know that there is a cheaper alternative to the OEM one though. The rear pump was from Blue Print, part number ADN10316. Front pump is ADN10315, but not sure how much they cost. Halfords and EuroCarParts stock the front pump (£12ish and £8ish respectively) Not sure how popular these rear pumps are as many zed out there has rear wiper delete but I like mine and finally, it's working now!
