I originally looked into finance/pcp deals which looked attractive, but i've decided against this as i'd rather own the car outright. There are only 3 cars that i want.... these are a current shape Merc C-Class, a Range Rover Sport, or a standard Range Rover. The first two are a little bit more than i want to spend right now at around £12-14k, but i can get into a regular Range for around £8k which is a really attractive option and something i could do in the next couple of months. Im looking at around a 2003 with 100k on the clock for that price, but age and mileage have never bothered me really as long as it's in good condition. I really like the look of this one with the 22" wheels but without the high miles http://www.autotrade...102hx?logcode=p Or something like this but not a fan of the silver, and preferably without the blue leather http://www.autotrade.../1500?logcode=p Does anyone have any experience with Range Rovers of this age/mileage? I'm aware that they have a bad reputation for reliability but i've not looked into what any of the specific problems are yet, but i will do. Servicing and most maintenance i will do myself so again im not overly concerned here... not sure about the cost of consumables however such as discs and pads etc? Im not really bothered about fuel costs as the diesels allegedly have slightly better mpg than the zed, and im only doing about 10k a year anyway, so splitting that over 2 cars will keep the miles down too. I've never had a 4x4 (and have no need for one), but it's an itch i feel i have to scratch. Any help appreciated guys... If your not going to do any off road, then go for a Sport Make sure you check the service history very carefully and also check that any recall/warranty work has been done. I know a couple of people who have had issues that should have been done under warranty and ended up costing them a pretty penny I am sure you will find all the known issues on the LR Forums. I've been following the price of them for quite a while. The petrol's are even cheaper but they're too thirsty. I think the red will look great on my drive along side my azure zed. Fraktion Posted April 3, 2013 Share Posted April 3, 2013 I'd echo doogy's comments. I came to the Z after an 06 Range Rover Sport supercharged with 78k on the clock. All I can say is it was an insane vehicle. I had the itch too... When looking at range's, serious fine tooth comb time. There's just so much that can go wrong with them. A simple air suspension fault can turn into a £5k repair. 14mpg too wasn't the prettiest but you know what you're getting into. Really take your time...and go for the Sport. Voodoo Vix Posted April 3, 2013 Share Posted April 3, 2013 Heater matrix's catch fire, handbrakes get stuck and won't come off is a tow to a garage job and suspension issues are the ones I know about from the stories Mike comes home from work with I'm sure there are others I've forgotten, but most are warranty issues and shouldn't be a problem if you're looking at older ones with higher mileage, even their AA driver at work says they're really unreliable and the vehicle he sees most but he loves them and is on his fourth lol Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The previous owner had just replaced the front 2 air suspension struts and compressor for about £3k. Not bad considering on his A8 Audi wanted £3600 just for supplying 2 front air suspension struts! He only lives 6 miles from work so the petrol doesn't worry him. A proper baller ride. I bought a P38 before I got my previous car, was an awesome peice of kit and I loved every minute of driving it. Got a full service history with it and worked out that it had £53,000 spent on it since it came out the showroom 15 years ago! docwra Posted April 4, 2013 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Ive got a 4.6 P38 at the moment and I absolutely adore it - its lovely to drive, comfortable and surprisingly quick, I picked it up for pocket money as well The weirdest thing is that as soon as I jump into it, Im cruising - I drive my other cars somewhere between fast and very fast, but found myself watching a bus pull away from me in the Rangey the other day The fuel is an issue though, whatever you think - I get 15 mpg driving with Tinkerbells slipper, that equates to about 45p a mile and makes it unrealistic to use regularly. Things going wrong is a constant worry as well but TBF thats offset by the amount of car you get for your money, if you can find one thats had the air, engine, diff etc. done then you should be on a winner Do it, you wont regret it Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Karlp Posted April 4, 2013 Share Posted April 4, 2013 Friend has a 03 RR TDV6 and has had quite a few problems with the brake sensor and also the air suspension, not sure if these are common problems. Also dont get the cream leather has he has had to have the drivers seat replaced twice due colour from jeans/denim rubbing into the leather. The best and cheapest alternative was for them to just stick springs on. I would have considered a RR over my Landcruiser, if reliability wasn't such a concern, theres a reason they "seem" so be good value for money. greg tl Posted April 5, 2013 Share Posted April 5, 2013 If you are used to reliability DO NOT get an l322 range rover 2002 onwards... A sport will cost you a minimum of 14k and that will be a minefield. Full size Range Rover diesel approx 6-7k minimum. Yes, these older range rovers look the tits, they make you feel special and on the surface they are great value for money but you will very quickly get bored of every time a light comes on it costs you a minimum of 300 quid, even at a decent specialist to fix. I have bought and sold quite a few, and owned a couple as a personal car and each time they have been a problem regardless. Each time you fall for the wow factor and each time it bites you!
