BMW 635D - Potentially a Good Buy?

My girlfriend is looking for a new car and her focus has now moved onto a BMW 635D, we test drove a 2009, 21,000 mile car at a BMW dealer yesterday in perfect condition. We both really liked the car but I was curious as to what you guys thought on a few things since I found you guys had some really good info regarding other potential car purchases in the past.

Firstly, what do you think of the 635d?

Secondly, What do you think the car is worth?

Thirdly, I don't usually buy cars from a franchised dealer; how much will they generally move on the asking price (It's only just come into stock) and are they more likely to move further on price since we have no trade in and require no finance?

Let me know what you think, cheers,

G

I REALLY like the 6 series, great looking car, especially with bigger wheels. Iv never driven one, but as a cruiser, I suspect they are really good, and I bet the diesel one has got some good range. The petrol 6 and 5 series were criticised for their small tank, especially the V10 versions. Its a shame that manual versions are very rare, though the auto is probably so good it dont matter. My only worry with all newer BMW's, is the iDrive system, and if it goes wrong. My friend has an E60 520d, and even changing the battery isnt easy, you have to get the car reconfigured to the new battery and tell it what amperage it is etc, which really can only be done at a specialist or at BMW. Great car to look at though, as long as you go into it with your eyes open, and appreciate its not going to be cheap to run.

I think they are a great used buy. I always keep an eye on used values for these.

Granted, not the prettiest car on the road but certainly have a bit of presence and that engine is an absolute rocket.

Just one thing to note, my friend has the 335d and gets about 31mpg average, so dont buy one if you think it will be good on fuel. Its much better on long runs but it hard not to hoon it everywhere as the torque is so addictive.

As mentioned by others the d's are not that that much better on economy really, but forget that. They are about day to day driving and overtaking they appeal more than the petrol variants. The torgue and low down grunt is effortless. They still sound nice for a diesel, but won't make a noise like a Zed or the V8 645ci.

I'd drive the petrol variant as well and see what you prefer. If it's a low miles, weekend, run to the shop car then get the petrol. 630ci is a bit underpowered for the size. If you're trundling the motorway the d is an option. Beware of low miles around town useage and the DPF filter.

I had a look at them before the Zed too, appealing, big GT, luxury barge, but then you look at it (more so from the rear 3/4) and then go...no I couldn't drive something that ugly. Its got presence! I'll give you that but, I don't give them a second glance lol

I have the 535d and it's an absolute pleasure to drive 'as long as its not snowing'.

Bad points are the sheer amount of computer sensors, last week my car was like the starship enterprise when I started her up as had warning lights everywhere ! Luckily it was a cheap fix but bear in mind there's a lot to go wrong with them. Great cars though

You ain't half right there... my friend had a 2007 3 series when it was new and it plagued him with warning lights for ages...later on in life locked him out the car, in the car...lol BMW from my experience with recent cars...arn't good with electrics. Too much, too complicated means too much to sort and to sort means ££££'s lol The thought of buying something like a second hand S-Class or something with lots of gadgets scares the hell out of me, imagine it all going wrong!

EDIT - And with that I've just seen this....

Go for it, the 335/535/635d are all great, but I have heard they aren't actually very good for fuel..but than again they are 300bhp cars .

Regarding electrics and servicing, its actually not hard to replace bits your self, I can take out my entire iDrive sat nav in about 15 minutes. As long as you got the patience you can also do alot of the coding stuff your self with a £10 lead off eBay (Battery resets/Error Code reading etc). Infact I'm looking at upgrading my iDrive to the latest version myself, but have some reservation about buying a "used" iDrive system from Eastern europe given that quite alot of stolen BMWs in the UK end up in Europe.

But if you take it to a dealer (as you might have to if you want a intact warranty/service history), than be prepared to hand over lots of cash!!
