Tiff Posted July 17, 2012 Share Posted July 17, 2012 I've just enjoyed my first track day in my 350z, and despite the high speed 'off' have definitely got the bug. Suffice to say there was zero tread left on the tyres. There are a few steps that I want to take to make the track day more practical, but am keen to start with the wheels. I'd like a spare set that I can use just on the track, and bearing in mind I'm a novice do not want to be spending the earth just yet. I am currently on 18" Rays, and would like to keep them as my road wheels, but have the following questions; 1. Should I stick to 18" wheels (standard width)? Both from a 'being used to 18s' perspective, but also if I go smaller (cheaper) or bigger am I likely to affect tracking / alignment and speed / mileage readings? 2. The older, touring style 18" rims (7 spoke) seem to be cheaper, but will they be good enough for novice (but improver) standard? 3. Should I move away from Nissan specific wheels and look at other brands? Will they fit around the Brembo brakes and if so what brands are recommended that are good value? You'll struggle to find a lighter 18" wheel without spending thousands, and the other OEM 18" wheels are miles too heavy. You'd notice the difference within a few hundred yards. ChrisB Posted July 17, 2012 Share Posted July 17, 2012 I was hoping someone would spark up and say a nice set of Rota GTRs would be perfect I currently have my eye on a set of very pretty silver ones.... well I like 'em but then I'm not tracking (yet) I used to like OEM wheels, but now they look like wagon wheels a bit.. Re040's aren't track tyres but are ok in the dry and warmed up. Slicks and r888's for dry and moist conditions. With the 350 I run slicks when weather permits and T1Rs or similar in the wet. I no longer run intermediates like 888s on the 350 as even the hard compound does not give any form of longevity due to the weight of the car and at £1000.00 a set it is commercial suicide so it really is a no brainer. With the R35 I have tried Dunlop and Bridgestone run flats. I am now on 285/305/ MPSS which are also Nitrogen filled but not run flats.
