notchy gearbox and clutch issues

i have had the 370z for about 6 weeks now. im loving it :teeth::teeth:

however, i am finding a few problems:-

*the gear changes are a bit notchy.

*a bit of crunching between 1st and 2nd.

*when in neutral there is a sort of very slight grinding noise. push the clutch down and it fades.

*had the clutch pedal stick on the floor when giving it beans.

*excess vibration on the gearstick when in neutral

these problems are giving me concern that the clutch and gearbox are worn. it has only done 11k. its within warranty.

gonna take it into Nissan in croydon to see if they can do anything.

anybody had any dealings with these problems or Nissan Croydon?

Noisey bearing.

I have a slight noisey in mine, I was in the dealers yesterday for something else and got them to check it.

Their tecky said, 'yes it's noisey, but Nissan would not replace under warranty' It's logged on there system, so, we will both keep an eye on it.

Surely the 370 can go anywhere, like the 350 could? I thought it was only the GT-R that was limited to NHPCs?

When I got my 370 the local Nissan dealer didn't want to know about servicing although they had looked after the previous two 350's. (something to do with money the dealers have to fork out fo specialist equipment/training I believe)

I now use Motorline Nissan at Tunbridge Wells (HPC centre) and recommend you do the same Mark - although its a little drive away - you'll get a free loan car (usually a 370 rather than a GTR I'm afraid  ). Ask for Ian Fraser and don't forget to mention you are on here ;)

thankyou everyone for the replies. i might take her down there colin.

bit of a trip there but if they know the cars then it might be a good idea!!

My mate makes the trip from Bedford to get his 370 serviced at Motorline, he speaks very highly of the place. Not a short journey but he thinks it's worth it for the service they provide.

I have the same noise on my 370. At idle with the clutch out sounds like a rough bearing noise but when the clutch pedal is pressed the noise goes away. I think it maybe a characteristic of the car as it's mentioned quite a bit on the 370Z.COM forum in the states.

Hi Mark!

Yep, same whine noise here in my 370 (only 4,000 miles) when in neural and with the clutch out! Only noticed it about a week ago, but seems to be a characteristic of the car as others have said. Might just be me, but it seems to have quietened since I first heard it (I've been taking opportunities to leave the car in neural and with the clutch out while at lights etc, thinking I might speed up the process of the noise disappearing).

I don't get a crunching (like you'd get when trying to engage a gear without the clutch, say) when going between 1st and 2nd, but it is an awkward and notchy shift, probably made worse by the fact that our cars have very torquey engines, so tiny alterations in the position of the accelerator pedal along with the clutch pedal at the wrong moment can cause a fairly difficult shift if you're trying to be smooth!

You haven't mentioned it (although it might be what you're hearing on your 1st-to-2nd shift), but another common issue is a nasty clunking sound when you're in a gear and you press the clutch pedal. It's just the clutch plates releasing, but doing it at the wrong time/speed can cause that noise (often, I think, if you stamp on the pedal too quickly). It'd be more noticeable between 1st and 2nd simply due to the speed, although I presume it happens between any gears.

The clutch sticking to the floor and excess vibration issues sound more serious, though - let us know how you get on with a dealer as I'm sure it'd be useful to everyone if you manage to get it all sorted - if they do something to fix the neutral whine issue, I'd get my car in for the same fix, too!

Just been in for first servgice and I got them to look at this, I think everyone is correct, I think it is just the nature of the car, must be as we all seem to have the problem., shame it is so noticeable.

I can confirm my 370 is the same, it's a characteristic of the car to be honest, that said no grinding between 1st and 2nd so check that out, a simple gearbox oil change could sort it but that's of some concern on such a new/low mileage car.

I believe most the symptons mentioned above are 'normal' and the reason I say that is having come from 2 350's, the way the 370 box works is much same including the noisey thrust bearing. Recently will370z was concerned as to whether his clutch/box was working correctly but having driven mine was reassured all was OK.

When I spent a day with Colin Hoad recently (he of CAT Driver training) and with the knowledge he had played an instrumental part for Nissan in the development of the 350 for use in the UK, the topic of gearbox noises came up. He reaffirmed what I have previously learnt from people like ZMANALEX, that the 350/370 box is somewhat "agricultural" (compared to say those in a Porsche) but were generally bullet proof. Accepting, there are always going to be exceptions.

The 1st - 2nd change, especially when cold but also in slow moving moving traffic (manual box), I find works best by a very definite two-stage shift - even to the point of letting the synchro-rev blip on the up-change. Now that may sound strange in a sports car but then in those conditions why rush the change? Once the oil the box is warmed up and road conditions allow the box comes into its own on the move and is a delight to use as it is clearly designed for more spirited driving than cold and heavy traffic conditions.

One of the reasons to use a HPC for servicing/fault checking is that they are are far more likely to know what is right and what is wrong, given the higher percentage of performance Nissans they deal with. Unfortunately, the non-HPC Nissan dealers will simply not have the trained technicians to address issues on our cars so I would say that unless you find one of the rare dealers that have suitably experienced technicans in their workshop, steer clear.

Got the whiney bearing noise on my 2011 370 at idle but it seems to go away with temperature increase, Only done 5000 miles. Funny thing is mine has become more noticeable with the recent drop in ambient temps as didn't really notice it a month ago when purchased. Gear change is all superb, a lot more slick than my recently sold 350 :) As per mentioned it seems common place on the370z.com. Clearly im not the only one

Well I rung them today. And barring the clutch down issue everything is apparently

"normal".

It's still going in tho.

Guy was a bit arsey on the phone. But if they know thief stuff.

Hi Mark,

You are not alone with the clutch jam issue. I had this happen in my 350z but only when I was dragging at Santa Pod whilst being a meathead on the clutch pedal. Sheer momentum was taking the cover plate over centre and jamming the clutch open. What I did in the end was to make a clutch pedal limiter which restricted the amount of total lift. Was only talking 1-2mm of restriction. The fault never re occured, even at Pod. Never looked back. Clearly this hidden agender resides still within the 370z

Hope this puts your mind at rest B)

Really??? As my zed has the same problem..... and they have the gearbox on the floor at the moment and they "may" be replacing it....... so who knows.... all under warranty tho.
