marcopolo Posted June 8, 2011 Share Posted June 8, 2011 Guys I am looking to break the 400hp mark in a oner with a lump of cash, but would like some advise on what mods should be done. I have a 2003 Z33 VQ35DE engine (JDM Import) My plan is the following: De-cat full exhaust system with 2.5" bore throughout Induction kit Lightweight clutch and suitable flywheel Uprated (500cc) fuel injectors and fuel pump Performance plugs Performance cams (stage 2/3???) Brakes have already been done, and the previous owner lowered the car. I will probably replace the whole suspension system though. Are there any other not tuning mods I should consider for this kind of power increase, ie anti-roll bars/strut braces. Then I am looking at a either a small supercharger and large-ish turbo, or twin turbo if possible, with the appropriate intercooling system. However the last turbo'd car I had was a L reg Celica GT4 when I was 19 and left it standard under the bonnet, so I have on the billy basic knowledge of them. This is my first big project so any advice would be greatly appreciated. If i can hit 450 bhp, hopefully this is a cheaper option than getting a GT-R cheers Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Neilp Posted June 8, 2011 Share Posted June 8, 2011 for 400hp youre looking at around 4-8k mark. That seems to be average. Stock internals will take 400hp safely on the de engine ive been told. If youre going twin turbo you'd be looking at a full build which is 10k +. The lump of cash is pretty much dependent on how patient I am on saving up. Considering the alternative option is a GT-R that has 460odd bhp for £40k for a used model, i'd happily spend 15k to surpass that. But that will include a few additional 'cosmetic' mods. Usually second hand will cost around 4kish. if your going forged internals then you might aswell go the full hog and twin turbo. This will just lead to more and more bills though and the running costs etc go up. You can end up spending way more than you bargain for. By the time you include Fuel return systems, exhaust, mapping..... Give Mark a call at Abbey Motorsports and go from there. and as I already said - go to my350z.com. If Nurrish says think hard before doing FI then I'd listen. If your budget is more than zed but half way to GTR then it may be worth it. Just remember slapping 450bhp into a zed doesn't make it on par with a GTR. It would still get eaten in every respect. If you want serious speed by a fast car! rabbitstew Posted June 8, 2011 Share Posted June 8, 2011 Not being funny but id seriously consider getting a different car, like an old scooby wrx, you can get 400bhp out of them for a lot lot less than it will cost you to modify the 350z to get that, unfortunately. Loads of my mates are into them, one has a 1998 one which has about 300bhp and its cost him about 2k all in - including buying the car!!!!! His mate has one pushing out over 750bhp (dyno tested) and he built it in his garden shed. Did 30->130mph in 6.5seconds! I dont know what it cost, but im guessing it was a lot less than my 350 cost! Its more like taking the zed to its next evolution With that said a with sorted 400WHP zed ill be a formidable car with looks to match. I had a 550hp scooby and its was not fast round a track! The power was not fully useable the same way a 700bhp R35 is useless whereas a 500-600bhp variant is all round quicker. If the guy wants to spend 15k to achieve this then we must applaud him and provide him with options. personally i think some of the figures bandied around wrt the cost are just plain heresay with real basis. You have to do your research and with clever spending it can be done relatively comparable to the other cars mentioned. A 4.0-4.2l BC stroker kit with sleeves with appropriate software/hardware eg ARP fasteners, metal gasket kit, cams/ reinforced valtvetrain components, UTEC or Uprev will push out ~370FWHP. You then could either go with a moderate boost SC setup or mid/rear mounted fast spooling single turbo to reach a very safe/bullet proof 400-450WHP. Some savings can be had here if you buy used refurbed sc or turbo from our US cousins or even locally when it comes up and some of the non-wearing hardware eg oil cooler kit, wheels etc . You would have to address braking suspension, lightened drivetrain components, FD/LSD etc to complete the package. With carefully spending and labour you can get this in a £10k budget. If you put this in the context of an £6-8k zed you will see that its very cheap as there is no way you will get a comparable sorted R34 eg for that price. The cosmetic side of things can be sorted cheapily with the same shrewd purchase approach and good taste. I would say man go for whatever you want as it is your dosh and dream.
