Eastern Block countries......

A friend of mine's son went to Poland for a 4 day relaxing break, with 3 other friends, and has had the most terrible experience of his life.

To portray this lad, he is 21yrs old, and really has a good head on his shoulders, never ben in trouble and never had any bother with fighting etc, so all in all a "good egg".

Firstly, on their second night, all 4 of them were "mugged" at knife point. Mugged being, abducted by a group of 7 heavily built guys in broad daylight, all 4 of them were taken to a cash point and

were forced to withdraw the max amount for that day.......

They were kept until after midnight and then they were again forced to withdraw the max amount from the cash point, then released to go on their way, some 100 miles from their hotel. Obviously shocked the group decided to cut their trip short and come home.

Secondly, while having a meal in a bar, and waiting to come home, the guys were discussing their previous experience's. So imagine the scene,

4 guys sitting round a table enjoying a meal in a bar, the bar is busy and music playing in the background, the hustle and bustle of bars, people pushing past the tables etc.

A guy on the table behind, has had his meal and paid for it, stands up, turns around and with one punch, punch's my friend son in the side of his head, and walks out of the bar. :scare:

He falls to the floor, knocked out by the punch, his friends rally round him as the staff call emergency services and police. All falls quiet in the bar, and people gather round this lad, his face starting to swell.

Back in the UK now, after an evac from poland. Turns out that this one punch has

Smashed his eye socket , broken his cheek bone and broken his jaw in 2 places, severed the nerves in his face and almost lost his sight. He needed a bone graft from his thigh to reconstruct his face. He is now recovering from his ordeal.

The polish police caught the attacker, when questioned and asked why he had done it, he replied that he didnt like English, and they deserve a beating...... :scare:

So, be on your guard if you go there, and the "mugging" is a NEW wave of getting money from tourists which is emerging from Russia and spreading across the Eastern Block.

Thats really not good at all....

Good to post up, as I have been on a number of stag dos, where the trend is to visit these eastern countries, as its good for cheap beer etc

And I am sure there will be many of us on here, either been invited or going on a stag do abroad, to one of these countries...

On the whole I feel welcome, however I always sense they really dont like the english, so your kinda a bit on guard anyway, which isnt great if your trying to relax and have a drink with your mates....

The most inimidating place we felt we went to was Riga in Latvia..... we wernt involved in any trouble at all, but i remember being in a bar where a girl walked up to me, and said "Where you from???" I said "England?" she replied with "We dont like you, you drink our beer and take our women!"

We then returned to the Hotel, where a English rugby club were also staying, and their head coach promptly come over and warned us to watch ourselves, as 2 of their guys had been mugged, and they were big built rugby guys......

They get you in strip bars too....... all very welcoming, come in, sit down, have a drink...... a girl may approach you, have a chat, and a drink with you, you get up to leave and goto pay, to be told its £300........ that "chat" cost you £200, and the drink £50, one for you and one for her (even though you had no idea you were paying for hers).... :scare:

And if you have not got the money, the bouncers then nicely escort you to a cash machione where you can withdraw it, before letting you go.....

After hearing that story, we just stuck to the bars!

I would say that this doesnt happen very often. My mums side of the family are polish and i'm just recently back from my friends wedding in Poland, as he married a Polish girl.

My experience of poland was amazing. The food, the people, the cities. I was in Gdansk and it was amazing.

This sort of thing seems to be happening more and more in and around krakow. A local guy I was speaking to said that "the english have a bad reputation in these places as they just go and get drunk and cause mayhem."

Maybe they were very unlucky and in the wrong place at the wrong time. This also happens in glasgow etc. Its not just middle eastern countries. Last week a guy was stabbed (and is still in hospital) about 50 yards from my house. We live in quite a respectable area but no matter where you are there is always violence.

I wouldnt let anyone be fooled into thinking this happens to every man who goes to Poland. There's thousands upon thousands of visitors every month and not very often you hear about things like this.

The polish police take no shite from anyone. They are as brutal with there own native people(if not more so) than with tourists.

I do however feel for your mates and I hope he gets better soon.

Very unfortunate that these things are occuring and putting people off from returning to such a beautiful country.

The guy involved has been arrested and is being dealt with, whatever that means.

I am in no way implying that this happens just in Poland, even the lad said he met some really nice people there and felt welcomed, so yes it can happen anywhere anytime.

We will never know what really happened in that bar that night or if anything said provoked the scum bag that smacked him, and no it wont happen to everyone that goes there, I am sure its a nice country to visit, so many have said it is.

What was just as concerning is the new wave of "mugging".

Again this has been bourne from Russia and it is spreading across the Eastern Block. The Polish police had confirmed to my friend that they are well aware of this upcoming problem

but can do little to stop it.

Every country has its problems, but I thought this post would just make more people aware of their surroundings when going overseas, or even in the UK.

we returned from poland 2 weeks ago, glad we didnt see this before we went as it would have scared the hell out of us.

To be honest our trip wasnt the best, the roads over there were absolutely ridiculous. We flew into Warsaw but were staying in bielsk podlaski (180 km drive each way). The roads were very badly maintained but the driving was the biggest concern. Its a single carriageway road with what looks like a cycle lane to the side. You find your self frequently in the cycle lane/ditch as oncoming traffic just drive at you to overtake. We have a video of a lorry on the wrong side of the road overtaking 3 other lorries and the oncoming traffic driving in the ditch to avoid!!

The people were not welcoming at all. Nobody even attempted to speak english to us (i know its arrogant that we expect this but it is the norm in more common places such as greece/spain etc). didn't see any beautiful parts of the country at all, was all grey and nasty. We went into Warsaw City. Which was a strange mix of nice new buildings and really horrible looking high rise flat type buildings.

This story is terrible - hope he recovers fully and gets compensated then somebody kicks the attackers ass.

So many inappropiate war comments come to mind.....I will refrain!

:scare: note to self do NOT accidentally turn left at Germany.

I get the sentiment about being wary of Eastern Block countries but I think a better warning is 'beware of the world at large'.........I sound like such an old giffer at times but I could weep for the state of the world these days - even those of us who are nice are being forced to become guarded and distant because you never know when the next loony tune is going to try and take a chunk out of you.

The mentalist in the bar sounds like a prime candidate for a knob glassing if you ask me

Had some trouble about 6 years back in the neighboruring Lithuania.

12 of us on a stag holiday. A real ethnic mix of white black and Asian and me the token oriental :p

We were out in 2 limos and asked the drivers to recommend a club that played hip hop/RnB.

Got dropped at said club and told that we could call taxis home from the club.

Towards the end of the night one of the black guys complained one of the locals was kicking off.

Apparently the local deliberately barged into him at the bar and wouldn't stop ranting.

To try to calm things down we got the barman to convey appologies for any misunderstandings and buy the guy and his 3 mates a drink.

Saw them scowling at us, all on their mobiles so we decided to round up the troops to make sure we all left together. Tried informing the security and calling cabs but they wouldn't help and couldn't turf us out quick enough saying "all fighting outside" :surrender:

As we were bundled out and the doors locked all we saw was a carpark full of yobs shouting racist chants :scare:

Had to walk between them to get out and then they STARTED :boxing:

Luckily the fight led towards a narrow street where their numbers didn't give them an advantage and none of them were tooled up. Just cuts and bruises on our side but could of been so much worse .

Like Neilp, I have never had any problems.

I have lived and worked in Russia and Ukraine over a number of years, without any incidents like this.

Although some of the things described are terrible, they happen in cities all around the world, including this country.

I think it just seems worse in a foreign country because you are not in the same comfort zone that you would be in on home soil.

(If that makes any sense.)

It's the sad world we live in unfortunately.

Awful story :surrender:

I've been to Krakov, Prague and Budapest on Eastern Europe Stag doo's.

Generally they are great places and very friendly, you have to watch yourselves in strip clubs that are basically brothels. Only place we had a problem was Budapest, we went in a 'sex bolt' strip club/brothel, one of the lads thought it was a bright idea to buy 4 girls a Cognac.

Thats a terrible story and really you would have thought eastern european countries would be a lot more friendlier to the English with the sheer numbers of eastern european people who have now moved to the UK and are working here.

I went to Prague about 10 years ago - just before it really became popular for stag dos. Funnily enough it was for a mates stag do and there was about 12 of us all together. We didnt get any trouble. We asked some taxi drivers to take us to a bar, and they ended up driving us out of town to some unit on an industrial estate in the middle of nowhere which turned out to be a brothel. We explained to them that we only wanted a drink and they took us back into town without any problems.

In fact at one point, we was going to get a taxi somewhere else and the taxi driver said it would be 20quid and a local passer by heard us talking and actually came over and told us it where we wanted to go was about 2 stops down on the train and that would be miles cheaper. Which I thought was very kind of them.

We even hit a "strip" bar which cost us something like 5 quid to get in, it included a free drink and a live show. None of us dare buy another drink in case it cost 200quid or something, but in the end one lad did and it only cost him £1 for a pint.

We did wander about the outskirts of the city centre and the "atmosphere" did not seem friendly, but that was probably the look of the buildings. We even found a very dodgy looking nightclub which seemed to be in a derilict building which reminded me of that scene in Blade but again we didnt have any problems. Which actually supprised me as a number of the lads on the stag do are proper looney hooligans and 9/10 times they seem to get into fights when they are out on the town here in the UK.

Of course this was all some time ago now, and things have probably changed since then!

I have been to Warsaw five or six times on business never had any trouble, but then again I go out in the evenings with Poles who take me to places where there won't be stag do's or the like. In the end as much as this story sounds utterly horrific, this sort of thing happens in the UK all the time as well. I used to live in Essex, and the reason I moved out of there was because two guys came up behind me in a bar and smashed me over the head with a wine bottle from behind because 'i had a white shirt on and someone in a white shirt had looked at his girlfriend earlier in the night' - just as daft a reason as the idiot in the Polish bar who hit the original posters mate for no real reason.

Anyway I still have the 4 inch titanium plate riveted to my jaw where is shattered in three places, and no it doesn't beep in airports ;)

omg this is truly awful, its scary how one punch can damage someone that badly, i guess if they know what they are doing.

Its such a cheek how we let all these people in our country and some of them sponge from us and send OUR money abroad making us weaker...but... when we visit there and invest money in their economy and look what they do to us for it! Its disgusting!!!:angry:

Have to agree with this, its just as likely to happen in the UK. For example, I went to Slough this weekend....

I don't think people are aware of the outcome of doing this sort of thing. They watch movies where there is a 5 minute fight scene and you might see a slightly bloody nose and both guys walk away and they think that's reality.

I have met some great Polish people in my time, I am pretty sure they are just as embarrassed by this sort of behaviour by their countrymen as I am of watching some England fans causing riots and ripping up bars in other countries and the like. Fortunately it is in the minority, and the majority are as welcoming as you would want.
